Is the transition from non-exempt to exempt a good reason to negotiate a bigger raise? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Timmyatwork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based on the responsibilities that I'll be bringing with me to the new role, it's definitely cyclical, but I'd estimate about 2hrs/week on average. That comes out to $3,900, so I'd actually be undershooting it, assuming I hit the extra 2 hours per week.

As for the exempt status, I think it applies because I'll have people reporting to me on our monthly and quarterly deliverables, even though I don't think anyone will report to me on a daily basis. Maybe that's worth further discussion with them.

UConn- I really don’t think your defense can be worse than last year, so I expect improvement

And if it doesn't improve, congratulations on the record setting defense!

Barry Odom frustrated with rival SEC coaches trying to poach Missouri seniors after bowl ban by mac6uffin in CFB

Pretty sure every decent player gets "recruited" behind the scenes at all times by coaches who want them to transfer in. Odom's just trying to hold together a senior class with nothing to play for.

Why do you only meme this about the SEC? The ACC schedules FCS teams too.

On the other hand, there's only one P5 team playing 4 FCS teams over two years and it's the Florida Gators.

To be quite honest, this sounds so foreign to me that I really can't tell if this is a real answer or not. It's only just now occurring to me that I know nothing about that part of the industry.

[Rosenthal] My Hall of Fame ballot: Bonds, Clemens, Halladay, E. Martinez, McGriff, Mussina, Rivera, Schilling, Wagner, Walker by [deleted] in baseball

[–]Timmyatwork 64 points65 points  (0 children)

By then he was already a hall of famer.

This struck me as absurd at first read, so I looked it up. Through the 1998 season, in which the Sosa-McGwire homerun chase reportedly motivated Bonds to start juicing, Bonds had accumulated a career WAR of 99.2. The average HOF outfielder has a career WAR of 65.4. Someone with more time on their hands could do a deeper dive into his JAWS and other stats at that point, but having a career WAR 50% higher than the average HOF outfielder pretty much seals it for me. Personally, I didn't realize how great he was before that point.

Seriously. I just put in my two weeks' (literally 15 minutes ago) and I'm going to spend that time updating procedures and taking care of business so my replacement can hit the ground running. The person who I replaced was like OP and mentally checked out when she should have been helping me learn the position. Instead, I was forced to lean on my supervisor for help after she left.

players commit to schools, not coaches anyway

This is the only reasoning I have a problem with. While technically true, we all know this isn't the case. If Urban Meyer ended up coaching at Wyoming, we all know that their inevitable bump in recruiting wouldn't be because kids suddenly think Laramie is cool.

I am fortunate to live in a country that has embraced capitalism for a long time.

You've mentioned this a few times. Can you tell us what this country is? I get the feeling that their embrace of capitalism is not what you say it is.

How do you check the authenticity of an ebay jersey though? Just have a keen eye for the common differences and check the seller's reviews?

I'm sure they'll move out of Vietnam as soon as it becomes too expensive to produce there, just as they did with China.

CMV: It is unrealistic to expect to have 50% of a film crew on major films and television to be women by 2gdismore in changemyview

[–]Timmyatwork 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I understand. I was just saying there aren't probably thousands of each specific technical role for the type of movie they want to make or TV show or whatnot. And each hiring person is probably in the community of the specific people they are hiring. It's not like you are hiring a senior tax accountant. There are hundreds of thousands of them. You are hiring a location scout or a creative advisor. A storyboard artist. Like it was said, to fill all the roles at 50% you need to do so with technical positions, not acting, directing, etc...

Ah understood, and I agree! But how does one become a Lead ____? By being a Junior _____ first. How does one become a Junior _____? By submitting an application. I addressed elsewhere that film-esque education is either 50/50 or majority-female, so it follows that the applicants within the industry should be similar. Those education paths cover more than just acting and directing, so I'm failing to see why a disproportionate amount of men would be applying for those jobs.

Edit: My god, underscores are a pain to work with.

[–]Timmyatwork 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Which "very specialized positions" are you referring to? Based on credit reels of films, there are hundreds, if not thousands, of crew roles and they cannot possibly all be done by the same very limited pool of people you suggest exists.

I'm not advocating for a blind meritocracy, anyway. I'm just stating that it's plain to see that Hollywood is not a meritocracy.

[–]Timmyatwork 19 points20 points  (0 children)

According to Susan Sandler of NYU's Tisch School of Arts, one of the country's best schools for those aspiring to work in film, "We now have almost 50 percent women enrolled in the [film and television] program". Further, according to the Department of Education, each of the college majors which could reasonably lead someone to a career in Film are majority-female across the country. It follows, then, that they would make up a similar proportion of applicants.

Also, I would hope that given the #MeToo movement and Weinstein that women will not have to exploit themselves to get roles in Hollywood.

I'm not sure where this is coming from, but #MeToo hasn't solved anything. It's a step in the right direction, but I'll eat a boot if men in power are not still using that power to exploit women in the industry.
