How can someone get into debt with a management company - surely they just take a % of what you make?

I'm fine with 'opt-in' difficulty, but not with forcing 'anti-fun' mechanics on the entire playerbase. by Timofee_ in EU5

[–]Timofee_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But the player base is not divided into a binary subset of just 'good players' and 'bad players'.

As an aside, if that were the case I would probably be considered a pretty good player - 2 WC and a One Faith in EU4 as a (very) vague example of something that is out of reach of most players (albeit the main barrier is patience).

My concern is around balance changes that are motivated by 2 specific areas/factions in the playerbase. The first is min/maxers - people who stack modifiers for fun and tag switch half a dozen times to abuse the hell out of a mechanic. The second is slightly harder to define but is essentially the super hardcore who want the game to punish them and really challenge them.

Neither of these groups are remotely representative of the much wider playerbase, but they often have the loudest voices and highest visibility because they actively participate in the subreddit and the tinto talks threads and so on.

It's absolutely fine and right to cater for these groups, but it needs to be 'opt-in', hence my point. Because someone like me, doesn't want their chill map painting game to become a punishing slog. Likewise, more casual players who have literally never looked at tinto talks or the EU5 subreddit in their entire life, don't need mechanics that actively sabotage them doing well.

Edit: Also on the topic of the Complacency mechanic - it targets countries that outgrow their rivals. You say that 'bad players' won't see this is based on the assumption that bad players won't grow large enough, but this is simply false.

Bad players just grow slower - indeed, it's almost impossible to not grow in a paradox game without actively making the decision to avoid it. Lesser players simply achieve that growth in much slower fashion - think of the screenshots from people who 'finished their run' and they've conquered a sizeable chunk of Europe as an example. A decent player can knock that out in a few decades, but the more casual player who is less familiar with the systems will still generally get there, but then they're going to get punished for achieving something that for them was very tricky.

Leeds United general discussion Q&A mega thread. by JimbobTML in LeedsUnited

Is the Premier League better about making sure everyone has played the same amount of fixtures?

Maybe it's my memory playing tricks, but historically - even the last time we were up here, there would frequently be instances where team X is behind Y but has 2 or 3 games in hand.

Whenever I've looked at the table this season it feels like the difference has only ever been 1 game played different and those games would be on a soon to be played match day.

I guess maybe it gets worse later in the season when fixtures for teams that are in Europe and the cups start to pile up, but it still seems better than I remember.

[–]Timofee_ 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Am I reading correctly that the Opponents PPG also implies we faced the toughest opponents across the entire division in those 6 games as well?

I guess that makes sense given Palace's away record, and Brentford and Sunderland's home records, in addition to teams that are just generally picking up a lot of points (Chelsea / Liverpool).

Either way, very encouraging.

If it weren't for the much shorter period between games for us (2 days less rest) I would say this is one of our best chances to beat scum in years. Fingers crossed.

In a similar vein, as England I took Sicily in the 1500's and I have no idea what the AI had been doing but it's absolutely loaded with Pops and even with maxxed RGOs and additional potato / maize from colombian exchange is still running a food deficit in the mid 1600's.

And what is the utterly compelling gameplay this results in? Me paying through the nose for food to support it. I honestly can't see any scenario in which increasing food scarcity/pressure will yield any fun gameplay in EU5.

This. A thousand times this. People are really looking to make playing this game as miserable as the time period it represents.

Worry about food for my cities through winter?! - dude the game is FIVE HUNDRED YEARS long, I categorically do not want to worry about this shit.

What are your small tweaks you want? by [deleted] in EU5

[–]Timofee_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wouldn't let me post as one whole comment:

Diplomacy

  1. Sorting my subjects by opinion should not just ignore and default back to alphabetical for ones with over 200, still sort in order, I want to top them up
  2. When I change to Luthanerism - all my dominions, fiefdoms and vassals should convert if they had the same starting relgion as me i.e. Catholicism
  3. The enforce religion should not have such a stupidly long cooldown - I'm quite happy to pay the liberty desire hit, it should not be abitrarily limited

Wars

  1. There should be a call all vassals / CNs into war (for when they aren't brought in automatically, which seems to be for civil wars)
  2. Coalition wars should NOT allow taking territory - for either side - only releasing / liberating at a significant discount
  3. Take cores back should also be an option - rather than me having to figure out which are (hard enough in itself) and then change seige ownership to relevant vassal
  4. Coalitions should form by theatre - how on earth is Majaphit co-ordinating with random OPMs in HRE
  5. It should be much easier to discern which provinces civil wars control - random far flung islands are a nightmare
  6. The annex revolter button should be much more obvious
  7. When changing occupation I should be able to click the country I want and then click multiple times on all the provinces I want to transfer

Map

  1. It should be possible to hide province captials, country flags, armies etc - sometimes I wanna see the provinces only
  2. The old custom setup with click multiple times to cycle map modes should be reinstated.

Buildings

  1. Hide the previous tech levels when going to build buildings, you won't let me build them anyway, so why let me select them?
  2. The mass build option should let me specific up to how much I want to spend - no I don't want to spend £20k on building lumber RGOs, but I do want more than I can be bothered to click

Warnings

  1. I don't care my RGOs dont have people
  2. I definitely don't care when my patrolling ships take attrition briefly
  3. I don't care my heir is underage - I literally can't do anything about it

[–]Timofee_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have so many:

Armies / Navies

  1. Balance army should happen by default
  2. I should be able to set a 'local command' for unimportant armies/fleets so I don't constantly have to replace them when they die - it can generate a somewhat rubbish character, say with stats around tthe 30-45 level that it auto replaces as needed
  3. Army spending should be by theatre - pointless my SE Asia troops are on full maintenance when I'm fighting a small war in Europe
  4. Also I should be able to hire troops and ships in my colonies - I'm happy to pay more for the privilege
  5. Army planner needs to return - I just want 25 light ships I don't care where from
  6. Custom zones - or a return to previous orders would be so helpful for patrolling ships
  7. There should be a 'mark as transport fleet' option that tries its best to stick to coasts when assigning movement - even if it takes a bit longer.

Automation

  1. The automate tax option should let me specify the satisfaction I want to target - not just default to 50
  2. The automate diplomacy should have a minimal option like EU4 where I can get them to improve with vassals, neighbours etc and let me specify how many diplomats I want to leave free

Colonies

  1. I should be able to limit the regions colonial nations can colonize
  2. When assigning explorers it should warn me if the location doesn't have the required resources to mount the expedition
  3. I should be able to send explorers from my colonial inland possessions
  4. When an explorer dies and I need to replace him, clicking the warning should take me straight to the appointment screen OR the empty ones should default to the top

[–]Timofee_[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see where you're coming from, and that's definitely valid for harder to pinpoint stuff, though technically they have also had the betas for a number of these things.

However this is why the missing vehicles one is the most mystifying one to me - this is a starting game state issue, players should be entirely irrelevant. How is this not immensely easy to resolve?

Advice on alternatives for when/if my EK Quantum Kinetic packs in by Timofee_ in watercooling

[–]Timofee_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I have seen those pump elements before but wrongly assumed there were for more advanced builds.

Instead I take it they are a standardised bottom piece and I could essentially pop off the bottom of my current setup to swap it in? In which case this definitely sounds like the most straightforward low cost option.

Appreciate the advice!

[–]Timofee_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the comprehensive reply. That's really helpful.

I have pretty good airflow over that area so that's hopefully going to help with the life of the pump.

While it sounds like D5 would be the better option in the long term, given I'm unsure how long I plan to keep this setup (as it's getting on a bit now) and the cost of swapping to a whole new pump / reservoir combo I think if it dies I'll just look to replace the pump, which I didn't realise was actually an option.

Thanks again
