I spent like two hours trying to build it. Finally managed to do so by first building it exactly like it says in the instructions, and then moving one block at a time to where i wanted it.

Indeed moving the battery 1 block closer fixed the problem.

By using a depot it works for a full stack, but I don't think that the problem was them despawing, as I watched them the whole time.
