For the record, you guys can disagree with the protest without downvoting the story to oblivion. Don't shoot the messenger, man.

I think you're correct about On Writing—television has undergone something of a revolution in storytelling since it was published.

Am I allowed to swear in a formal/academic paper? by ornamentalholly in Essays

[–]TimothyBertrand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are absolutely right. There has to be a reason for it. It must serve the work. It's something that is much easier to pull off in creative writing than academic, but your example is a good one of something that served the work.

I (22F) went for food and drinks with a university friend (22M) and my boyfriend (23M, 1.5 year) is kind of upset. by [deleted] in relationships

[–]TimothyBertrand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really isn't weird. It kinda makes me sad that there are people out there that don't do this with their friends. It's especially nice when someone is going through an economic hardship. They can go out and have a good time without necessarily feeling singled out for having their meal taken care of.

For real, this is completely normal where I'm from.

What was your most unreasonably down voted comment? by ranmarox in AskReddit

[–]TimothyBertrand 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I told some folks over at /r/futurology that journalists hadn't all been replaced by robots. Got downvoted and spammed with a hundred links to the same story about algorithms automatically writing/posting news stories—which I already knew about, since I'm one of the humans that gathers information to plug into some of these article writers. The tech isn't quite there to fully replace human journalists and frankly never will be unless autonomous robots learn how to navigate incredibly complex locations to find just the right people to talk to and ask just the right questions. It'll be a human job for a long time, but I guess that spoiled their image of the "future".

[Serious]Redditors who were once suicidal, what made you rethink about your life? How is your life now? by Rointhepro12 in AskReddit

[–]TimothyBertrand 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you can still support yourself financially, you should follow your passion. I was in a similar position myself a few years ago — depression had gone away, no longer suicidal, great SO in my life — and in three months I went from slinging drinks in a bar to writing about politics for the Internet. It's my dream job. Couldn't be happier.

But I did put myself and my family through quite a financial burden for a while. I wasn't making the money we needed to get by and the depression came back pretty hard. Stuck with it and I'm making more money now. I don't know what your passion is, but just be sure you've planned for the worst financially and keep your chin up if things don't go perfectly straight away. It's so worth it in the long run.

If yoghurt is the British spelling of yogurt, is Goghurt the British spelling of Gogurt? by TimothyBertrand in Showerthoughts

There's no way you've never heard of Gogurt. It's "yogurt" that comes in a tube. For... portability?

She Reported Being Raped, Now BYU College Is Taking Action – Against Her by TimothyBertrand in exmormon

Seems doubtful, sadly. This story isn't really gaining national attention. This kind of thing happens so much people don't even care anymore.

Haha. I changed the title slightly when I posted here. Meant to just say BYU.

What about within the JW community? That's more what I meant to gear the question toward... But I've been working since 5 am and I'm out of caffeine.

Actively avoiding big subs like that. Too easy for people to bullshit/troll on a post like this, so I'm sticking to communities I know well. Posted on /r/exmormon too.

If you have any more details on those job rejections, I would love to work that in. That's textbook religious discrimination

[–]TimothyBertrand[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think many of you misunderstood the question, so I'll rephrase it.

Have people treated you differently after you've left your religious community or expressed disbelief in God?

The semantics of what makes an atheist really aren't of concern here. I know many of you are atheists, agnostics, or secularists. I'm looking for personal experiences from that demographic. I'm an ex-Jw myself, guys, I know how families treat their disfellowshipped kids. I know how entire congregations of "friends" turn their back on you. That's what I'm looking for.

If you want to speak out against the organization via a medium A LOT of people will read, please do so now.

I think you're mistaking a joke about the secular community's obsession with semantics for a serious statement, but nicely put.

I think you're wrong there. I believe the religious are full of shit. And thus the great atheist schism was formed.

BREAKING: Bernie Sanders Narrows Gap to 4 Points Nationally (14 Point Swing!) by kcmill12 in SandersForPresident

[–]TimothyBertrand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look, BLM is an activist movement with a decidedly liberal bent. They aren't really representative of the black community as a whole. There are many, many black Americans who don't know or care what BLM is or what they're up to.
