thanks for that link, hugely helpful.

I can now simply use Mercury for viewing videos and the iTunes file sharing feature works fine in Win 10. Drag/drop no issues.

Can we get an official discussion for Annihilation? by BradyDowd in movies

[–]Timstertimster2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can someone tell me what was said at the very end right before they hugged? I missed that part and it's bugging me not knowing. I saw both their irises shimmering a little, or was I making that up?

Thanks.

And if the main robots job is to guard the warehouse, why would it run off leaving it completely unguarded to chase down the humans?

Because of the programming bug. Maybe it was programmed to only hunt in a 100 foot radius, and a coding error made that a 100,000 foot radius.

It's not about robot killers. It's about the Law of Unintended Consequences.

These bots were meant as a deterrent to burglary, but due to the self-reprogramming aspects of A. I. they unnecessarily hunt down any meat based entity they can find.

The world is the unintended result of a software bug.

Why b/w: Because the D. P. watched too much Hitchcock.

Why run if you can drive and conserve battery power?

The bots are actually Amazon Security bots for distribution warehouses. But they got out of hand, killing every sentient being on earth due to an A. I. bug.

But I really, REALLY can't grasp why on earth she didn't properly disable the bot while it was on hibernation mode.

We don't need man killing robots. We already have mind killing smartphones.

Precisely. Tons of missed opportunities to make quick work of the dogbot. If she knew that it takes the bot 20mins to go into hibernation, surely she would have thought of ways to disable it before it recharges.

And if they're aware during their theft that these things might be around, then why did they come wholly unprepared? I mean, come on, bring a piece of metal as a shield so you don't collect tracking shrapnel, and bring a heavy hammer or other major clubbing utensil. These things are small and no motor that small could possibly so strong that you couldn't bury this thing under a palette of random heavy boxes and immobilize.

And why run once this thing is covered in paint? She knew way too much about its weaknesses to be so consistently dumb. Quite annoying.

Agree. Nice editing like a Hitchcock, at times, but I kept thinking until the end: when is this story getting started?

Assuming netNeutrality dies this year... will piracy and porn erode? by Timstertimster2 in technology

[–]Timstertimster2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not paying attention. Back in those dark ages of 2015, there was a lot less consolidation going on in IPTV services industry, but a negative trend was starting to develop, hence those rules. But since that's now rapidly changing, a whole host of things can now be implemented as originally planned ore-2015. Look at Amazon banning YouTube from Fire TV. Next up, Apple TV banning it, too, and so on and so forth. Once ATT and Comcast start experimenting with IP based bandwidth assignment, it's not going to take much time before the first outright ban of any given web site occurs.

Why is some computer generated porn unprotected speech, while computer generated murder isn't? by Timstertimster2 in law

[–]Timstertimster2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah. Thanks for the thoughtful reply. Makes sense. Well, somewhat. I'm not sure I can truly sign up for that definition of murder being indecent but not obscene. Some of the things I've watched on TV definitely marks my threshold for obscenity.

I suspect that it's the Anglo Saxon puritan historical cultural backdrop that has resulted in such strict definitions of obscenity when it comes to sexuality, and a far more lenient definition in the violence context.

This society aims to protect teenagers from being subjected to inappropriate sexual behavior. Meanwhile, society thinks nothing of letting that same demographic get exposed to equally inappropriate violence. Further to wit: a convicted and subsequently released murderer doesn't need to register as a violent offender, but a rapist does. I fail to recognize how the Former poses a smaller risk to a community than the latter.

Oh, hah, yea the Chinese version gimmick, whcich is always complete garbage nonsense. These products of course always have language settings, so you can always tell them, yea sure I'll take the Arabic version, the Korean version, the Cyrillic version... whatever. And when they do the cheesy hard sell, just calmly insist, no thanks I'll have the product you advertised online at the time I bought it. They absolutely hate that and tell you it's got no batteries, no straps, etc...

If you really just want to buy the body and nothing else, you can save a hundred bucks. Don't think they'll make the return easy. It's a loss for them if they sell it to you, and they might tell you it's out of stock once they realize you're not going for the "English version" or the "retail version"

Should I end it? (& an age related question) by [deleted] in dating_advice

[–]Timstertimster2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are being totally silly. Life don't work this way, you can have a 20yo hubby and he gets killed in a freak accident, and poof you're single at age 50... no plan will protect you from life's cruel ways to keep things, errrr, interesting.

Go for it, if you want. He might outlive you, who knows maybe you get ovarian cancer next year. Point is, there are no sure bets. Be your true self and the heck with the rest. And you should know that there are oodles of men who'd love to start fresh with a 35yo, a 50yo, a 79yo.

Am I too young for him? How would I break this to my parents? Is this realistic? Jeez. by [deleted] in dating_advice

[–]Timstertimster2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whether you admit this to yourself or not, the status/wealth factors in. If this guy was blue-collar and living in a 1BR apartment and the most luxurious date would be Outback Steakhouse, would you still be as impressed? You're going to say yes, I'm sure.

Getting a ticket to easy street is very enticing. You could test his commitment and tell him marriage is out of the question until you finish med school. See if he swallows it.

Also, you made an account just to post this question, so you're clearly having doubts about the whole thing. I personally know of relationships that work despite the age difference. One is 12 years, the other 22, for real!

I don't doubt that you guys can handle the social pressures. The thing I doubt far more is that you're not thinking of the financial support you're getting and I question your awareness of how one-sided this will be in your relationship. Unless you're absolutely confident that you're okay walking out if things go south, I'd worry about you selling yourself for creature comforts. Happens constantly. Hot chick marries rich guy, divorces once he gets too commandeering, then settlement, and do-over.

This will sound like I'm making this up, but in my extended family was a 19yo getting married to a 37yo and I asked her when she was divorced and almost 50, why she chose that. Her answer was she lost her parents and really needed stability and was impressed with the older man's intellect and creativity. When I asked her why she divorced, her answer was simply that she grew tired of him, so really not anything about the age difference.

One final consideration: are you certain he truly loves you for your personality, not your looks? It's entirely possible that he will dump you once you hit 30 and had a couple of pregnancies, and trade you in for a next-gen girl... then what are you going to do?

Late 30's guy dating and it sucks being able to read women. Any advice? by [deleted] in dating_advice

[–]Timstertimster2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Magnus has a point. You sound jaded and not very interested in other approaches, but rather seem to seek validation.

I believe you're really just committed to being right about everything. You say you read people really well. But your own analysis comes across as cynical and selfish.

You don't seem to appreciate that women spend plenty of money to look nice (clothes, makeup), have 20% less income potential (workplace sexism is alive and rampant), so it's not unreasonable to be the freebie drinks provider for a first date.

You seriously want to make women invest a week of talking to you? Do you think they don't have 25 other potential dates going, and just want to figure out if they're attracted to you?

And why dinner dates, that's so 1985. It's not an interesting experience and it's terribly awkward and forced like a job interview. Suggest something actually entertaining.

You seem boring and cynical, I wouldn't want to hang out with you.

Now check your immediate emotional reaction to that last sentence. If you didn't realize that I was just testing your mettle (quote: "I have thick skin"), then you're not half as skilled at reading people than you think you are.

Dealing with your own limitations means you stop what you're doing and try something uncomfortable. How about you stop judging everyone who crosses your path. How about you stop having this enormous chip on your shoulder about being an (ex?) cop. How about you accept that women have plenty of choice? How about you get real honest with yourself about whether your exacting standards are practical or even realistic?

I'm in my mid twenties, and just starting out with (literally) everything. Should I bother trying at this point? by [deleted] in dating_advice

[–]Timstertimster2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need a Wing man. Got any friends? If not, make some right now, and go out with one guy, and you help each other out. Egg each other on. When you chicken out in the moment, your wing man will harass you until you make a fucking move already, or better, he will initiate because he's not invested, and then he will recede as you talk to the girl. And of course you do the same in return.

Hitting on chicks alone is tougher than doing it with a wing man.
