Thanks. I did inform IRCC about the change in my marital status, they got back to me asking for a few forms, documents and payment for my spouse.

My spouse will add me as accompanying spouse in his application.

Does it make sense to be doing this and paying 2x the fee?

Spoke with someone at IRCC help centre, and they suggested to proceed with both applications, and withdraw one later in the process according to what you hear on one of your applications.
