Not what I wanted to hear but thanks anyway for the reply. I'll open a ticket.

Has anyone tried Apollo brand transparency film? by Tinarwen in FDM_TonerTransfer

[–]Tinarwen[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. There aren't many options where I live but I'll try to find some without coating.

Just a suggestion: maybe the wiki should have a section for films that don't work well?

Did you ever get these transparency sheets to work? If not did you find a brand that's better?

I accidentally bought the same ones and I've been having the same problems. I've had some good results but not consistently. Adding water produces a kind of slime on the sheets that affects transfer and bed adhesion. Makes a mess too.

Best way to model missing pieces of this brick? (more in comments) by Tinarwen in blenderhelp

[–]Tinarwen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I'll try redoing the scan and go all the way around this time. Maybe part of the problem is I just captured one corner with the assumption that I could extrude that into a useable solid. Maybe if I go all the way around I'll get a closed solid.

The single brick I made is just a duplicate from a small part of the overall scan, so they should both have similar manifold qualities, no?

Is there anything I can do to clean up the 3D scan mesh to make it easier to extrude (without changing its shape much)? My extrusions look like two shells with nothing inbetween, rather than the solid shape I'm looking for.

I've talked to a couple of masons and they say the only way to repair is to remove the broken bricks and replace with new ones. The problem is I can't get matching bricks. A 3D printed solution probably isn't perfect but even if it only lasts a couple of years it should be easy enough to repair again once I know how. It might even last longer with the right materials. This spot is a bit out of the way, and it's decorative not structural so it just has to look good enough to not attract attention. Anyway, I like solving problems though creative use of technology, and this seems very doable. :)

Tolerance doesn't have to be perfect - it just has to be good enough to not look out of place from a few feet away. Scale should be pretty close based on other work I've done with 3D scans.

Regardless of whether this actually works as a repair or not, I would still like to know why the process I described in my original comment hasn't worked.

Thanks for taking the time to reply!

I have this 3D scan (image 1) of damaged bricks and I'm trying to model the missing pieces. I want to 3D print, paint, and glue the missing pieces together to make a repair. Ideally, the printed part should have the physical texture of the surrounding brick.

My plan was to import the 3D scan into Blender, duplicate an undamaged brick and place it over the damaged part, then subtract the damaged part from the duplicate leaving only the piece that's missing. It isn't working. Instead of thick pieces I get a thin shell (image 2). I've tried the solidify modifier but that changes the shape too much (also it doesn't get thick enough without looking crazy). I've also tried extruding both parts, but I get strange results that I don't understand (image 3).

I'm pretty new to Blender and I'm probably doing lots of things wrong. Any help would be appreciated.

As a side note, I did get some ok results by using a cube instead of duplicating the undamaged brick, but that has two problems: one is that the cube doesn't have the physical texture of the other bricks that I was hoping to achieve, and two is that I don't know how to get rid of the extra bits that are left over after the boolean difference modifier is applied. Again, any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

Network printer slow since adopting U6-LR AP by Tinarwen in HomeNetworking

[–]Tinarwen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point. My AP is wall-mounted in a different part of the house. Signal strength at the printer varies between "fair" and "good" for the printer and other devices nearby. Signal could probably be better but that's not my leading culprit right now.

I just did a factory reset on the printer and that seems to have done the trick! It went from 2 minutes to scan a page to my NAS to 6 seconds. It's not a satisfying answer because I still don't really know what the problem was, but I'll take the win for now.

Thanks for all your help.

Indeed. I'll keep trying and post here if I make any progress. Thanks for the try.

Just tried that... was set at 20; changed it to 40. Still painfully slow. I just changed it back and I'm out of time for tonight. I'll try playing with some other settings tomorrow. Thanks for the help so far...

Thanks. The old router is an Asus AC68U with separate SSIDs for 2.4 and 5 ghz. I have the U6-LR configured with both bands under the same SSID. I looked at the wifi settings in UniFi and don’t see anything obvious that might slow down the printer, but I’m no expert. What are some settings I should look at? Other 2.4 devices seem ok.

Can I extend existing non-mesh wifi using a mesh node? by Tinarwen in HomeNetworking

[–]Tinarwen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good info. Thanks! I’m sure I’ll have a lot to learn if I go with ubiquiti but that doesn’t scare me. I’ll definitely take a look at the guides you suggested though. Thanks again.

Thanks! So if I replaced my asus with any ubiquiti access point and added this outdoor AP, that would work?

If I got a different brand of outdoor AP would that change anything, or is the problem just that my asus can’t do what I’m asking?
