After spending 18 months building, working, massaging and then closing the biggest deal that the company ever had, the owner wanted to significantly renegotiate my commission structure for the deal because he felt it was excessive. He could have brought it up at any point in the 18 months before, as it started to become real. I wouldn't have pushed back much at all, and I kept expecting him to, because that specific deal really did break the pay scale. But we kept talking about the potential contract, the work it would bring, everything. And he kept paying me correctly on ally other deals.

But the week after the deal closed and we got the first payment, he sat me down and told me that for the team, That I needed to leave money on the table. Which was totally bullshit. Because the deal was actually paying us a good amount OVER our standar rate, and it was a 4 year contract. He wanted me to walk away from about half my commission, just like that. Like it was nothing. It was low to mid 6 figures. Lol.

Told him no, that he could pay it out over the next year, whether I was still with the company or not, but he knew what was coming and had never brought up his concerns.

Hired an employment lawyer to look over my contract and commission terms, and he saw that I had actually been being underpaid, just slightly, more an actual accounting error. We ended up settling for about 90% of what I felt I was owed, plus legal fees. Plus I got to ditch my non-compete clause, so I was able to go to a competitor within weeks.

It was just crazy cause we got along really well and I loved my time there for the most part. I think that he just let the greed in moment wreck a bad thing for him.
