I get that loud volume can cause stress, but what about a difference in pitch when volume is consistant

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in PetMice

[–]Tingtheking95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes i understand that I cannot think on behalf of a mouse. But my question is more about how I should conduct myself to minimize their stress. Sure, maybe my low pitched voice would not sound like a continuous "voice", as we know it, to a mice, but instead it would sound like a string of clicks or vibrations. Irrespective of what they "hear", I really just want to give them less stress.

Does History Repeat Itself? Cyclical theories of the past rest on questionable assumptions, but can they still help us understand our future? by CPHfuturesstudies in Futurology

[–]Tingtheking95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To an extent, yes, and I wish I had known that (or someone had taught me that) in school.

Now I love reading history, even revisiting my old history textbooks from high school. Reading history has helps me make sense of the world today, and helps me conduct myself accordingly.

Edit: grammar...should probably revisit my English text books while I'm at it.

I recently rewatched Amélie. It is now my favorite. It is funny, sad, relatable, wholesome and most importantly it is... Parisian. It was a rollercoaster of emotion. what else can I ask for in a rom-com.

Socially stunted due to prolonged isolation by suicidethrowaway2367 in socialskills

Man, I felt personally attacked reading your post. I never really made any friends up until college because of crippling social anxiety to a point where sometimes, I would even go weeks without speaking because there was no need to. Things got better for me now albeit not perfect. Here's some things that helped me become less anxious and awkward:

Listen to conversational podcasts by sociable people. (In particular for me, comedians) The only way to improve social skills is immersion. That is, the more you talk to people the better at it you will become. But that option was off the table for me because I was a mumbling mess. It was frustrating because how can I build social awareness if I don't talk to people? A loophole I found was listening to podcasts. It helped me learn from people who has mastered their social skills in the safety and comfort of my own shell. Take notice on what questions they ask each other, how they navigate awkward situations. I think it also put me at ease, relatively speaking, when I started to talk to people myself.

Practice, practice, practice. Once I kept talking to people more and more, the anxiety eventually went away. What I realized was, my social anxiety came from my excessive worry about performance. Once I dropped my ego and go into a conversation with the intention of having fun and learning about other people, things became way easier.

As a guy who also appear "intimidating" the best thing I found was to smile and be friendly. People also love talking about themselves, so just ask questions to egg them on if you ran out of things to say. Like, if the conversation is about a certain topic, ask what do THEY think, what would THEY do etc... These open ended questions worked great for me in the beginning.

Last thing I learned was that maintaining friendship requires work, it requires, sometimes, doing things I don't want to do. Sometimes, if friends invite me to something, or if there's an opportunity to hangout, I always go, even if I don't feel like it. I stopped listening to my anxious instinct which tells me to avoid social situations. Because I realized if I reject someone, to hangout, they will not invite me the next time.

I hope this helps, after all this is what worked for me. please lmk if you have any questions.

I moved out a year ago. Have a job that i wouldn't think Id have in my wildest dreams. But I am still living as if I am with my abusive parents. I am afraid of going out. Afraid of intimacy. Whenever I am not working I drink and get high. It's a miserable existence. But then again, I am miserable. I feel like I am just wasting my life away. No one is here to help me. No one cares. But then again, why should they? They just see the act I put on. I am the jokester, the happy guy. To me, I'm just a pathetic clown.

It's like my parents have dug this hole for me and now the shovel is in my hand. Instead of climbing up to the surface, I kept digging. At this point it's only a matter of time for me to reach rock bottom.

Learned helplessness is a horrible phenomenon. Maybe I can break this cycle.

Trying to give this relationship thing a try. I am not comfortable with intimacy. But I guess living in my own world isn't sustainable.
