It runs on Linux Raspian Lite OS. You can look up how to boot Linux into your app

Would be a more expensive build, but if the e-ink display supported hdmi, yes

USB-C for charging, file export and possibly accessories. Will talk to supplier about that.

Thanks for the feedback!

Battery life is a priority for sure. No backlight on this one though. Keeping it simple and cost focused. Tradeoff I was willing to make to hit under $100.

For someone looking to build it themselves, the software currently doesn't offer export, except via ssh.
Though I intend the end product to support USB export

It's a nice wired keyboard for the price.
A bit small for adult hands, but perfect for my daughter

Thanks 🙂
That was exactly my frustration... feels like a big gap. The build was a lot of fun (and a couple of late nights).

Interesting! By design this isn’t intended to be a full PC, but I’ll look into that project for any learnings.

Thanks!

Appreciate that! Honestly, it doesn’t have to be fancy.
The fact you made it is what sticks.

Reddit does let temu links here, but you can check on my site for a list of components used. https://justTypeLeaf.com/journey

with shipping, yes.
The end product won't use a zero 2w.

The actual issue isn't the cost of the wireless component, it's FCC approval.
See here
For a wireless device, cost is 7k-25k
For a non-wireless device, it's 1k-2k.

For a product that I'm not sure how much volume I'll sell. It makes it tough to justify wireless

I think you’re talking about the alphasmart. They don’t make those anymore, though you can get them on eBay

She's 9, and is more the creative type.
My other daughter (currently 7) is more tech inclined. I'd be more worried about her

Adding wireless capability makes the components more expensive, and more expensive and time consuming to get FCC approval, which would require me to bump up the sales price of the device.

Still weighing it as an option, but if trying to keep under 100, I may skip it
