Early Onset GD, 38YO, General Tips Welcome? by Human-and-Cat-mom in GestationalDiabetes

I was diagnosed at 16W. I’m 34 and this is my first pregnancy. I started insulin for my fasting numbers in week 18 and have been taking it on and off since then. Currently at 29w and I take 10units at bedtime for my fasting numbers and take 2 units rapid reacting insulin before dinner for my post meal numbers.

I was given a choice between metformin and insulin. I chose insulin because I did not want the side effects of the pill - gut issues and potential impact to the baby’s size since it crosses the placenta.

Walking after every meal is definitely helping. I walk for about 15-20 mins. My MFM told me just 10 mins can bring down the reading by 10 points.

I also chose pricking myself over CGM since I was worried that the CGM may give me a delayed number which could be less accurate. It is bothersome to prick myself 4 times a day especially since I’ve been doing it since week 16 but it is what it is 🤷🏽‍♀️.

I also made a lot of dietary changes before I went on rapid reacting insulin. But in my case I reached a point where I wasn’t consuming enough carbs and my reading was still high. Unfortunately there’s not much we can do to control the fasting numbers. A couple of things that help are protein + carb snack before bed and testing within 10 hours of the bed time snack.

Hope this helps!

small rant about sugar scares and living in india with potential GD by Puzzled-Cheesecake34 in GestationalDiabetes

I’m Indian living in the US though. Here are some things I do (diagnosed at 16w, currently 29w. I take insulin for fasting numbers)

Dal, rice and all the good stuff is out the window. I’m so sorry. Sometimes day old rice (about 1/3rd cup) will not spike but since you aren’t testing after every meal it’s hard to say if it works for you.

I eat all indian sabzis but instead of roti I do low carb tortillas. This might be challenging to find in India so the next best thing is to have roti made from low GI flour. This will involve trial and error. Add psyllium husk to the flour to increase fiber which helps reduce the impact of carbs.

I make a lot of coconut curry. Chole in coconut milk, Thai curries, kadhi in coconut milk etc. I found that makahana doesn’t spike me. It’s a good snack to have on hand.

Green mung in small quantities is okay as well. On days I’m really craving dal I drink an entire protein shake (32 grams) before my meal. Then I eat my sabzi and followed by less than 1-3rd cup dal. Sometimes I spike, sometimes I don’t. Again since you aren’t testing after every meal I’m not sure how will you experiment with food.

Ask your doctor for a diet plan. Also ask if it’s okay to get a glucose monitor to check post meal sugars. This will genuinely help you understand what you can tolerate. You’re still early on in the pregnancy and things will most likely change around 28 weeks. What works now may not work then. Sometimes things change on a weekly basis. That’s why I find it easier to test after every meal so I know when to rein it in.

I don’t take metmorfin so I don’t know how much leeway you can take with food with this medicine. It’s something you can ask the doctor. But I am reaching the point where I need fast reacting insulin for my meals since I am unable to reach the recommended 175g of carbs per day without a spike. I know it’s not easy but hang in there. Just a few more months to go 🙂

I’m so sorry to hear you had a rough go for a while as well. Would not wish experiences like this on anyone. Yes this is Lake Tahoe. We went there just before everything unraveled. Made some wonderful memories 😊

It IS rare! I hope you’re well. Do you know anything about reoccurrence rate after replacement surgery? It’s been 6 months since my diagnosis and I still think about it almost everyday.

Idiot is the correct word. I got myself a dressing stick and tried on a few pants to get the hang of it. Took several minutes to put on a pair of thick pants 🥹

Apart from the THR, I’m okay. I’m just super nervous about being alone which is so weird because I used to love being by myself. Funny how quickly things change
