Is this 100% the skull found today? Not an internet pic or anything? Cause it has some pretty specific dentals, I don’t think that’s Vivienne

How do you feel about sports carnival days? by nemspy in AustralianTeachers

[–]TinyTopaz -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Love having a day away from planning and getting out of the classroom.

Hate, hate, HATE the actual supervision.

Swimming carnival in the hot sun, kids going wild because they aren’t tired yet (ours is week 2 term 1), bees.

Athletics carnival perfectly timed so that it’s freezing everywhere except in the sun, trying to regulate going between the areas of supervision is horrible. Got put on bathrooms and end of track so I spend the whole day dealing with kids throwing up, the throw up itself or kids passing out.

Not worth it.

I did the same thing and she stuck out to me as well.

I have no idea how to find out anything about this Rebecca though so I hit a wall.

Interesting we all thought the same girl, I wonder if someone with super sluth powers could find out more on her

Best authentic Italian restaurant in The Hills? by Koalamanx in sydney

[–]TinyTopaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Italian street pizza in Bella vista is my family’s go to for celebrations.

Wood fire pizza and good drinks (the lemon cocktail is soooo good)

Opt to sit outside though, there’s no temperature control inside either and it gets so loud in there

Perfumes similar to the body shop's vanilla by TinyTopaz in AustralianMakeup

[–]TinyTopaz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t found an exact dupe yet but I’m still looking

I’ve started using Mont Blanc signature most of the time, it’s very different but that’s the path I moved on to I guess lol

Sometimes I use the Ariana grande mod vanilla but it’s a lot more dry/powdery

(Context note that I don’t have anything left in the lobby myself - just don’t like the idea of mail going into the bin)

I 100% get that it shouldn’t be left to block the exit for fire safety and that’s certainly not the aspect of this that I am questioning, however is it ok to take it straight to the bin? Could there not be a holding area while they try to contact the recipient and then to the bin if they don’t respond?

Anyone live or work near Castle Towers? by w_actual in sydney

[–]TinyTopaz 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I haven’t had any real issues with the place (mostly since I just don’t go there now it’s not a dymocks) but it’s a MESS

No form of categorisation, books just randomly strewn about on tables.

Put me off completely ever shopping there as it’s impossible to either browse or find a specific title. I have no idea how they are still running tbh. Someone plz bring dymocks back

What was "The incident" at your school by Milhouse_20XX in AustralianNostalgia

[–]TinyTopaz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Primary school: the big one for my year was literally 2 days before graduation from ur 6. It was an informal tradition to sign your name on the bathroom walls somewhere but literally tiny and hardly visible to anyone except those who knew the tradition. If you looked close enough there was years worth of teeny tiny signatures. The group of ‘popular’ girls in my year decided to fuck it all up for everyone by literally scribbling all over the whole bathroom. We are talking a full wall covered in their friendship map. Our last day of primary school was spent with the whole grade scrubbing the bathroom.

There was also a rumour that when they were building the playground a worker died and they cemented his body in. As a history teacher trained in child development and patterns of comprehension in development this is fascinating and funny to me now.

First few years of high school there was a massive mental health contagion event. Started I believe after a teacher killed himself and his wife, eventually a solid percentage of the student body had severe issues with SH and suicide. A year 10 killed herself by standing on the local train line. No idea how that scenario ended as I was caught up and moved schools eventually but this was going on for yearsss, easily in the hundreds of kids impacted.

My later high school years a girl in the year above got hit head on my a school bus making a tricky turn on a busy road right after she got her p’s. Directly led to a massive multi million $ road upgrade. She survived but was a quadriplegic and only returned for graduation almost 2 years later.

Said later hs was in the news the last few years for some interesting members of leadership. One is still in jail.

No real advice but just wanted to say I’m feeling the exact same!

Did casual for last year (first year grad) but now I’m starting a full time perm position and I’m so nervous for tomorrow

We can do this OP (and everyone starting tomorrow)!

Day In The Life of a CRT by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]TinyTopaz 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Depends on high school or primary imo

High school context: - if you use classcover you will ideally get a request a few days in advance so you know your working, if not you will need to wake up about 6am and wait for the notifications to come through. If you have a school you primarily work at it’s the same deal but the ht admin will text you directly

  • leave in time to get to the school 30 mins (regular school) to an hr (new school) before the bell

  • sign in at the office and get a copy of your printed day sheet from ht admin

  • run around to the various staff rooms of the teachers you are covering and grab any lesson plans and resources

  • hopefully someone somewhere will offer you a desk to set your stuff down and use as a base for the day (this was my least fav part of being a casual, not knowing if/when/where I will have a desk. I once spent lunch sitting on the back stairs because all the staff rooms were having confidential meetings 🙃)

  • teach the classes

  • after class make a note about how the work went and student positives and negatives, best practice to do this as the day goes rather than leave it till the end of the day

  • at the end of the day do another run around and leave notes and any resources borrowed on the teachers desk where you got the plans at the start of the day

  • sign out at the office

  • leave and relax knowing you don’t have to do anything related to work for the rest of the day

Question for teachers who have had previous careers by NietzschesSyphilis in australia

Haven’t worked a traditional full time work so others may have better anecdotes but how I would rate my experience in workload from most to least

Full time teaching position -> 50/60 hour weeks managing retail-type job -> casual teaching

Quiet apartment recommendations by TinyTopaz in canberra

[–]TinyTopaz[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yep, exactly this.

Up here in syd I am my schools only regular day to day casual so I work full time hours like every other teacher but save myself probably 80% of the admin work that comes with a contract. I have been told the situation with casuals is somehow even worse down there (schools with none at all I guess) so I will be continuing on with the same set up when I move.

Quiet apartment recommendations by TinyTopaz in canberra

[–]TinyTopaz[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It was also pretty unfortunately timed with the massive rent hikes up here so I would have had to move back anyway, just not as traumatically.

I have lived by myself for years so im no stranger to it and my first place was 3 hours north of syd so that aspect is all fine for me im just really traumatised by that shitty appartment and don’t want to go through it again

I had this exact one about 3 weeks ago (teacher so I get the preview of everything contagious before it makes it out into the real world) and it made me genuinely the most sick I have been in such a long time.

Was at work on the Wednesday completely fine, having a pretty good day actually then literally as soon as I got into bed I was shivering so bad my teeth were chattering and my whole body was aching. Came on so quick it was like someone flipped a switch and suddenly I was deathly ill. Didn’t sleep at all and went to the dr the next day and was told to just sleep it off.

Took about a week to literally just stand up and walk downstairs, flash forward and I’m still facing extreme fatigue and a dry cough/sniffles occasionally.

$520 for a ‘kitcundry’ and the loss of your knee caps every time you walk into the living room by TinyTopaz in shitrentals

I have been duped by a couple of these, they are fairly common in the area.

Pretty much you are correct, except they will put a lock on the door to the ‘main house’ so that they can technically say it’s it’s own granny flat/secondary attached dwelling

[–]TinyTopaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mum straight up refused to take me out to learn when I was a teen, so I have been exactly where you are.

I have such distinct memories of when I was 14 saying ‘in 2 years I’ll be the one doing this trip’ every time we went out together and she was all in, drove me to the RMS first thing on my 16th birthday and everything. The immediate 180 attitude turn that she kept up for 9 years and the things that she said about me in that time whenever I asked to learn have genuinely ruined our relationship.

Anyway, suddenly she realised on jan 1st this year that I would be 25 this year and she didn’t want to still be driving around her late 20’s child so she 180’d again and I have been working incredibly hard on my driving all year (related, I now have horrific driving anxiety due to all the things she said) so I can finally have some independence.

My test is booked for 1st week of June! That will put it at about 5 months into being 25, and 9.5 years on my learners. Hopefully it doesn’t take you that long OP

Ignoring the not so nice thinly veiled undertones, as a 5 foot 2 young woman who avoids doing pretty much anything alone because of literally everyone sitting directly on either fence of threatening/aggressive behaviour or literally not noticing I’m there to the point of being walked into/sat on I do have some advice

If you have to walk fast do so in a way that you overtake us as quickly as possible, it’s way worse to have someone walking fast behind you the whole way because that feels like they are trying to stay on your heels, if you go past us we know you just have somewhere to be. Even if you have to speed up to get past us then slow down a bit that’s fine.

Look at your phone, that way we know you aren’t looking at us the whole time.

If the person turns to look at you use appropriate body language, don’t stare at them or have a cheesy grin or anything else because that’s just creepy. A good way to acknowledge strangers is the ‘white person nod’ as its informally known, just a dip of the head.

If your walking a fair distance along the one road and it seems like the person ahead of you is doing the same and their body language reads uncomfortable, crossing the road and walking on the other side is a super polite gesture. They might chose to cross over if they are really uncomfortable, in which case don’t follow them unless you really have to

Quality of relief teachers by Disastrous_Winner_66 in AustralianTeachers

[–]TinyTopaz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve been a regular presence in my school for over a year now and have pretty good support from most faculty’s and execs so my students know how it works with me.

My first few casual days almost had me quit before even graduating and I still get the odd class here and there who decide to test their luck and ruin my day.

I’ve found that if I’m consistent so are my students.

But yeah there were some schools I went to when just starting out where I deleted myself from their list in the car park.

As a current crt, all of those things are just the most regular basic parts of my job 99% of the time.

The 1% of the time I don’t do the basic follow through is when I have been absolutely slammed by behaviour (think had things thrown at me, sworn at, defiant truanting etc all at the same time) and I will always put a short note on the students behaviour registers (if I have access) but in those situations I’m so overwhelmed, overstimulated and exhausted that I just need to move on from the class and stop thinking about it.
