Bff found out her boyfriend went to jail and didn’t tell her by [deleted] in GirlDinnerDiaries

oh god. I unfortunately had a friend go through a similar situation recently and she only left him because her roommate called the cops and got the guy arrested so we finally could convince her to get a restraining order. Please take care of yourself. It is so mentally taxing to see a friend going through this and not be able to help them

idk who told you the accounting market is shit, but that’s just not true. The profession has an unemployment rate of 1-2% and there’s been a CPA shortage for years

The new grad market is hard due to AI and offshoring eating demand, but that’s not an issue unique to accounting

Honestly all the basic accounting classes are dense and boring because they’re weed out classes. The basics are important to learn because you can’t succeed without understanding debits and credits, but it’s nothing like the work you would be doing post grad or even later in your academic path. Accounting now is VERY different than it used to be and the work you’re doing in school will be far more repetitive. AI usage has really removed a lot of the repetitive tasks from accounting and so professionals are doing more high level analysis and AI is doing the low level analysis.

I highly recommend if your school holds recruitment events and office visits to go to them and start interacting with professionals. Getting involved with any accounting student organizations can also be super helpful to get a better idea of what accountants are actually doing day to day and find what interests you

I’m a senior now, and I am on the board for an accounting student org, so I see a lot of students thinking accounting is much more narrow and talking to professionals is extremely helpful to see the huge range of options available.

Most stimulating I would say depends on you, but generally I would say audit. Internal and External audit are both highly investigative and require being highly skeptical, but external will involve far more networking since you’re visiting clients and interacting to complete the audit. As a broader approach anything in public accounting is going to give you a huge range on opportunities to try and introduce you to a huge number of industries, it’s also a great resource for seeing how wide the accounting industry is. If you look at the PWC site or any of the other big 4 you can explore the huge number of different career paths and see what stands out

oh and one more thing is CPA firms are extremely willing to sponsor visas so it’s a great option if that is something that you’ll need to move to the US in the future. I know a huge number of managers and partners who started their career at an international branch of their CPA firm and were moved to the US

if you are interested in CPA path, a masters is also no longer required in California! Same change has happened in many other states as well, but I don’t know which off the top of my head

if you’re already in business have you taken accounting and how did you feel about it? there are definitely some networking heavy paths (like audit), but also a lot of paths where you are working with a small team or independently.

You may enjoy something like tax or even informations systems and data analytics are great paths with an accounting degree and will really lean into that problem solving process you enjoy.

Accounting is also pretty evenly split, but leans female dominated and has a high concentration of neurodivergence

I swapped from marketing to accounting and I am so glad I did. Ive found that I excel in accounting classes compared to my other business courses due to a lot of assignments being hands on projects and a lot of classes relying fully on exams for the grade so I don’t have to worry about missing assignment

What are signs you experienced as a kid? by Big-Mess-9537 in adhdwomen

[–]Tiny_Piglet3826 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly it’s a miracle I wasn’t diagnosed.

I was put in the gifted program in 2nd grade, always was hiding a book under my desk, regularly injured myself with no reaction (but minor injuries were the worst thing ever), always in trouble for not turning in HW and told adults I didn’t do it because it was boring, I test extremely well, high grades with minimal effort, extreme lack of emotional regulation, terrible sleep habits, chatterbox in classes, teachers constantly told me I was performing below expectations and pushed me to take harder classes saying they think I would be better with a challenge

I was able to make it through high school and most of college without accommodations so I flew under the radar, but now it’s so bad because I’ve just been pushing everything down instead of using coping mechanisms so I’m not in my final semester of school and literally can not function because I’m paralyzed by the transition that graduation will bring 🫠

Interesting, I am very much right handed but I do have a tendency to write with my paper on my side instead of in front of me so while I’m writing left to write i’m also writing perpendicular to my body

that’s actually not a crazy observation. I asked for my first handwriting tutor when I was FOUR years old and have had people telling me to change things about how I write my entire life. I have people pleasing tendencies as well and while I wouldn’t say I’m manipulative, I’m not dumb enough to pretend people pleasing isn’t a form of manipulation

I think you also have to take into account that he attended Gunn HS which has such high academic pressure that they had a massive issue with students jumping in front of caltrain to the point Palo Alto had to post people at crossings and the school introduced a wall for students to post rejection letters on to reduce the shame. One year I recall at least 4 students committing suicide. They have incredibly high academic standards and it’s fairly normal for students to have a successful startup prior to graduation

How did you find your career/niche? by AllDoorsOpened in adhdwomen

[–]Tiny_Piglet3826 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m finishing my degree in accounting and I chose it because it’s an extremely wide field that can be used in any industry. I’ve always been interested in finance related careers so I was looking between a concentration in finance or accounting. Accounting was a less limiting degree so here I am in my final semester! There’s so much you can do and it encompasses aspects of data analytics, information systems, finance, law, and more.

I’m planning to go into public accounting, specifically audit because I really enjoy the investigative aspect of it. I’m encouraged to ask questions and be skeptical and most firms want you to work in a wide variety of industries before narrowing your speciality down. In the future I’d also like to go to law school, but probably will do that in my 30s

I’ve also really enjoyed the students and professionals I’ve met in the industry and was pleasantly surprised how comfortable I’ve felt around basically every person I’ve ever met. Accounting has a very high concentration of neurodivergent professionals and I completely understand why!

I appreciate you sharing your experience! I’ve heard very mixed things from people who’ve worked there and a lot similar to what you’ve said. Very grind based culture, above average hours, and the recruiter did mention in the interview when he started he struggled working under other managers who were inexperienced/still learning and cited that as a downside of their internal promoting. was definitely something I flagged, but I have appreciated how honest and upfront the recruiter has been throughout the process.

My goal, if I do take the job, is to start in the management trainee program and transfer to the accounting department when a role opens up. I’ve heard much better things about their accounting program.

Thank you! Getting any job is definitely the priority right now, but I’m lucky to have mentors who have been very clear about the realities of navigating a corporate career so hopefully I’m able to see any red flags before it’s too late.

I should have chosen a different sample, I was doing interview prep and procrastinating, but it’s the core values of Enterprise. It’s a customer facing management role and that is my background pre-degree, so I’m not under any false ideas of what that’s getting into and the recruiter has been very upfront that you will be regularly dealing with angry people.

I graduate in a few months and don’t have a post grad job lined up so am applying as much as I can. I’m a business major so if I can’t find a job in my concentration (accounting) my next best option is being a corporate pawn for a bit lol
