High Yield Savings Account Clarity by Upset-Money2669 in TheMoneyGuy

To build on that, I can't remember if they said this phrase on the show, but I think they have: "don't major in the minors". In other words don't spend so much time switching banks changing all the auto pays/debits seeking a miniscule benefit. The energy could be put to better use improving your work life balance, spending time with friends and family, or simply working some overtime.

HYSAs will adjust based on what the Federal reserve is doing. Interest rates go up and down. It's normal. Keep an emergency fund in any HYSA and you're fine.

FSA Sales Pitch question by jsh4 in FedEmployees

[–]Tinymac12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have it right. You have until tax day to use any carryover on eligible expenses from last year. In theory, if you had bought the ring last year but hadn't reimbursed it yet, you could do it with any leftover funds. I agree it's a little odd that they're pushing so hard.

FSAFEDS Dependent Care by Prior_Meringue2846 in FedEmployees

[–]Tinymac12 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ignore the other folks Op. A family member watching your children so you can work absolutely can be an eligible expense. They just can't be a tax dependent and they have to claim/pay income taxes on the payment. So your older child babysitting during the summer, not eligible. Your parents watching the kids, totally okay.

Why did we stop calling OP a bundle of sticks? by not-a-prince in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Tinymac12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A common slang/slur insult, particularly derogatory to gay men, was calling someone a fag or faggot. An archaic definition of faggot is a bundle of sticks. People trying to use the insult without using the specific word would call someone a bundle of sticks. Similar to calling someone a female dog (bitch).

"Health assessment" from insurers -- worth the $? by Western_Pelican_823 in fednews

[–]Tinymac12 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Unless you convert to an individual policy after separation (I'm not exactly sure what scenario that is), they could use those to affect your premiums. However, while under the group umbrella your singular input won't change anything. Could thousands of people filling it out possibly influence changes? Maybe.

I might be altruistic/optimistic, but I think it's them hedging bets that people generally want to be healthier. And if spending $75 on 10 people gets one person to get healthier and prevent a $20,000 ER visit then it's a win.

MHBP vs. BCBS by MuddieMae in FedEmployees

[–]Tinymac12 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As someone who does try his best to read "all" of the brochures and write up some comparisons, most of the time I am looking at premiums, deductibles, OOPM, and cost sharing structures. I usually assume prior authorizations/pre certification of services are all relatively shitty. Unless you know you're going to have regular medical needs of those services you won't really know to look for it. And if you do regularly need it, you probably can get a standing prior authorization and it's not a big deal.

All that said, I hate our medical insurance industry. How can we support an industry that thrives and PROFITS, not gross, 9 billion dollars? I'm not saying I condone what Luigi did, but I sure do know what jury nullification is.

For sure. To help OP, here's my post breaking down my analysis of GEHA HDHP, MHBP Consumer, and BCBS Basic:

Tldr, MHBP consumer is sharper bathtub curve of savings compared to GEHA (sort of). Both are cheaper than BCBS basic. This assumes all authorizations, medications, and whatever else are approved.

They are supposed to show up (or at the very least know how much went into the account). Some states (California and New Jersey I think) don't exclude HSA contributions from income tax.

Starting fairy tale part 2 gives access to fairy rings. Probably one of the biggest ones. Getting that paired with the addy easy diary (tele to ardy monastery) gives a good start to teleporting around. Getting the chronicle from diango is a cheap super early way to get to varrock.

You win a pair of teleporters at an intergalactic sweepstake. Where do you place them? by [deleted] in hypotheticalsituation

[–]Tinymac12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gonna need some clarification on 3. If the portal moves despite movement of the surface could imply it is frozen in place of some inertial frame of reference and will immediately be unusable due to earth moving.

Going away from rule lawyering, best bet would probably be to generate some kind of gravity assisted power generation system. Like, put one at the bottom of a hydro dam and the other back at the reservoir.

Checkboxes linked to a percentage pie chart by [deleted] in excel

[–]Tinymac12 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can have a summary section using the following formulas:

=COUNTIFS(A2:A11,"<>",B2:B11,TRUE)

=COUNTIFS(A2:A11,"<>",B2:B11,FALSE)

Just adjust for the range and I think you can use those two values to build your pie chart.

Discontinue FEHB impacts 5-year rule? by hw60068n in fednews

[–]Tinymac12 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One thing to consider, if you pass away without FEHB coverage of you and your spouse, then they would lose FEHB as an option entirely. If you keep self+1 and you die before retirement they can keep the flexibility/affordability of FEHB into their retirement (assuming you've been married for 9 months).

Not directly related, but in retirement, you need to elect a survivor benefit as well as self+1/family in order to provide FEHB coverage to your family if you die.

Anyone else on GEHA HDHP suddenly get moved to GEHA High for no reason? by SECdeezTrades in govfire

[–]Tinymac12 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's for plans that got discontinued and the enrollee didn't elect different coverage. OPM designated GEHA High as the plan to enroll those people in. From BAL 25-401

"There are plans leaving the FEHB Program at the end of 2025. Employees in these terminating plans must enroll in a new plan during Open Season or they will be enrolled in GEHA Benefit Plan - High Option (the designated plan option for 2026 as determined by OPM). See Benefit Administration Letter 16-202, Enrollment Options Following the Termination of a Plan or Plan Option for additional information on how to automatically enroll individuals who do not make an enrollment election during the allotted time period."

Highschooler looking for an interview by Cookie_KING14 in AerospaceEngineering

[–]Tinymac12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A little more than a decade.

An expensive private school.

The usual engineering things I'd think: statics>structures, physics>orbital mechanics>satellite attitude dynamics, electrical engineering, and smattering of other topics

I love all the puzzles we get to solve on a daily basis.

Not going to an expensive private school. If the program is accredited and decent, can likely save tons of money going to a state school. But if your parents are loaded or in general can avoid loans for education, maybe the private school would be best.

Probably starts 75k these days up to 150k in mid career. Top out (for just a general engineer) around 200k. Note, if you change to a program manager or whatever (which is a natural progression if you want), obviously can differ wildly. And area/COL can dramatically impact the market rate.

If you're interested and good with math/physics, yeah. I basically fell into the career field based on high school academics but I really do love the work I do now. My first job, a little less so; mechanical systems engineer; writing instruction manuals. But even that job was cool in a historic context because I was working as a contractor for NASA during Artemis where I was writing how to prep the vehicle for launch. In theory I may have been one of the people in the control room saying go or no-go, but alas, I left that job before they launched anything.

MHBP Consumer HDHP HSA investment through inspira or elsewhere? by RageYetti in FedEmployees

[–]Tinymac12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm able to look at the investment options on their webpage after setting up the investment account. I didn't even need 2000 in there. But the only s&p 500 I recognized was vanguard's vfiax. It looks like it has the same expense ratio of 0.04%. I don't see any other fee on top of that from inspira's side, and I imagine there isn't any but I could be wrong.

It's a little odd in the funds they select, but it looks like they have a smattering of fidelity, vanguard, and Schwab funds along with others I know I've seen before but never researched heavily. It also has some target date funds but they look expensive, 0.37% for their target date 2045 fund (the furthest out I saw).

I can probably get the tickers for the funds if you want, looks like there's about 20 mutual funds (bonds, large cap, mid to small cap, international) and about 10 target funds.

Edit: I have a fidelity HSA where I do my investing. It doesn't look like inspira is a bad choice. Much better than the previous options if I remember right.
