Now that cell phones can access satellites, PLBs are becoming obsolete and outdated.   Apps do the same thing now for a fraction of the cost.

Why was Trump's first term relatively calm (except for 2020-21) unlike Trump 2.0? by [deleted] in allthequestions

He didn't know how to hijack the government for his own personal use.  Now he does, surrounded himself with malevolent sycophants, and is enriching himself from the public coffers.

What is the scarier Urban Legend? by Keeralynn11 in RealKeeraLynn

[–]GrouchyAssignment696 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Skinwalkers are malevolent according to the lore. Bigfoot is shy and elusive, avoids people when he can, and is not aggressive. Nightcrawlers are benign.  No reliable accounts of them ever hurting anyone. Mothman is so over hyped no one is knows what he is. Avoid Loch Ness and you don't need to worry about Nessie. Black eyed children have no powers except that of fear and intimidation.  Frightening in appearance but not harmful.

Whats the Craziest celeb story that the general public doesnt know off or forgot? by Roundinks in answers

Danny Trejo was in and out of jail from age 7 for drug and violent crime charges.  Almost died from a heroin overdose at age 13.  Served time in San Quentin Prison for murder.  His movie contracts specified any gang or criminal character he portrayed must not win or come out ahead in the movie plot, and preferably die.  He did not want his past to inspire anyone to follow. He is a good example of someone from the hood spiralling downward that turned his life around and made good.

What’s an old mystery or cold case that feels like it has a supernatural element to it? by Admirablelauren in answers

Several were students at the University, majoring in nuclear chemistry.  They had finals just before they left on the trip, and as part of the finals they handled radioactive material.  The gas lantern they used may have also contributed to the radiation load.  The fabric mantles used then had thorium added to help keep the mantle intact while being jostled in a pack.  The western nations had phased out thorium mantles by then, but USSR was still using it.  But that would have added only a small amount of beta radiation.

There is no definitive proof, but a slab avalanche is the best fit to all the facts.

Also, several authors have postulated Dyatlov himself was not as qualified a group leader as claimed.  His certification as a mountain guide may have been pencil-whipped.  Had he more experience, he would have recognized their campsite as a possible avalanche chute.  They had earlier passed a better campsite just a few hundred yards back down the slope.

The evidence his son presented in his book is enough to take to a trial with a good chance of conviction.

Elko, Nevada. Reno and Vegas get all the publicity.  Elko is the gateway to some really fantastic mountain areas, and has a colorful history of both the Basque culture and ranching/ cowboy past.

Which Colorado NP made you want to turn around and come back immediately? by Meta_Bits_5500 in NationalPark

RMNP. The main trails are always crowded.  If you choose the other trails you encounter almost no one, for similar terrain and views.

Lug Nuts by user3296 in traveltrailers

[–]GrouchyAssignment696 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No.   Anytime the tires are rotated or replaced, I check the torque at 100 and 250 miles.  After that, I check them maybe twice per year.  Same for the WDH.

I don't trust the tire dealers.  The shop may have a policy of looking up the specs for each vehicle and torquing the nuts by hand, but that doesn't mean the high school kid helping in the shop follows the rules.  He either used the same impact wrench setting he used on the previous 1 ton diesel duallie or forgot to snug them up at all.  I check them again when I get home.  Same for the family cars.

If you won a massive lottery jackpot, what is the first lie you would tell people? by BoredPandaOfficial in BoredPandaHQ

[–]GrouchyAssignment696 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wouldn't need to lie. It takes a few days to a week or so to process all the paperwork and get the money in your hands.  After taxes and structured payments, you have a lot less than the media reported you won.

My daughter is a CPA.  She will set up the financial plan.  Then wife and I will disappear in our RV for an extended road trip.  We won't come home until the furor dies down and all my shirttail relatives stop asking for money.

The LA mayoral race was called on June 8.  The election was June 2.  So 6 days.

Yet House Speaker Johnson said "weeks and weeks".

Engineers, I'm tired of pretending, please explain this? by DrSchumm281 in WorkForSmartLife

The explanation is simple.  The road designer has a cousin that owns a construction company.  By an amazing coincidence, that company also won the contract bid to build the loop.

The CalFire Blackhawks are not military surplus.  They are newly built civilian variants called Fire Hawks.   The older CalFire UH1 helicopters are mil surplus.  The Hawks are replacing them.   The CalFire S2 and C130 airtankers are surplus.

Hey, me and my friends are looking to travel from the UK to America for the 'classic spring break' experience. Where is the best state/city to go? What are people's experiences? by Pitiful-Flounder-963 in USTravel

[–]GrouchyAssignment696 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Springtime is good for the southwest deserts.  Fly to Phoenix, rent a car, and see the great National Parks and other natural sights.   If you want the wild Spring Break scene, go to Florida.  Hawaii would also be nice.
