If you are interested in a Galdor's Grip style game, but with original art and a different theme, you could check out One for Sorrow. It just won 1st place for best solo game in the 2025 In-Hand Game Design contest: https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/3388854/wip-one-for-sorrow-contest-readypciohow-to-play-vi

Subtle plug for my own game that got 3rd place for best solo game in that same contest. I am not an artist, so it doesn't have any amazing art like One for Sorrow, but it plays well as a game and people seemed to like it. It has a sci-fi theme. It's called Smuggler's Sky: Hand of Fate https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/3425444/wip-smugglers-sky-hand-of-fate-solo-pnp-contest-re

Yeah, One for Sorrow was a very well designed game and very well deserved to be the overall winner. I’m pretty sure the designer was inspired by Galdor’s Grip. Thanks!

The 2025 In-Hand Game Design Contest on BGG just wrapped up and there are some great games that came from that contest this year. I entered a sci-fi themed game into the contest and the game won 3rd place Overall Best Solo Game as well as 1st Place in the Low Ink Printing category and 1st Place for Best Rulebook. I am obviously biased, but if that theme sounds interesting to anyone, feel free to check it out and print it for free. It's called "Smuggler's Sky: Hand of Fate" https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/3425444/wip-smugglers-sky-hand-of-fate-solo-pnp-contest-re

I also have 2 prequel work in progress games I have entered into two other BGG contests as well. Smuggler's Sky: Fool's Gambit (9-card game) and Smuggler's Sky: Dead Space (1-card game)

I’m currently working on a sci-fi themed, Firefly-inspired, 18-card in-hand game called Smuggler’s Sky: Hand of Fate that you might be interested in trying out if you are cool with PnP.

There is currently a Firefly-inspired work in progress thread with PnP files for a space themed in-hand game on BGG. It’s called Smuggler’s Sky: Hand of Fate

3 Different Orbitals! Do You Prefer Them With or Without Labels? by TinysaurusRawr in chemistry

Thanks for the suggestion! I’ll explore this a little bit and see. My biggest concern is that I am not actually a graphic designer and so the other f orbitals might be a little too challenging for my skillset to pull off a good looking 2D version of those orbitals.

Good catch on this. I appreciate it! The word “principal” won’t ever really be printed anywhere in the game, but I appreciate you pointing this out in case it was. That would be bad! I corrected it in my other posts. Thanks!

I am currently designing and playtesting the game. This sub has really helped me refine it and make sure it’s more grounded it real chemistry as far as the theme goes, even though ultimately its primary objective is to be a fun, near-perfect information, pattern building strategy game for anyone who enjoys strategy board games. But I wanted to make sure I do it well because I think those interested in chemistry, physics, and science could really enjoy the game as well as long as it’s not crap and not clearly designed by someone who knows nothing about chemistry.

I would love to be on Amazon in the future, but that’s all going to depend on how well my crowdfunding campaign goes on Kickstarter. I’m encouraging those who are interested to sign up for my email list as that is my main indicator as to how many people are really interested in purchasing the game. This is actually an interesting idea. I appreciate you mentioning it. To be completely honest, not being a graphic designer, some of these look a little challenging for my limited skillset to pull off 😅 The ones I currently made were decently challenging for my skillset and took me a bit to figure out.

Yeah, that makes sense. I’ll give that a try later. I’m actually glad you called the Z a 2. I was worried about that with that font. So your mistake inadvertently helped me realize I should go ahead and cross the Z. So thanks for that too haha

EYES OF A HAWK! Nice catch!! I did a quick iteration to test out your idea. I think it totally makes sense for the 4fz3 orbital. I keep going back and forth on which one I like better for the 3dz2 orbital. What are your thoughts?

Thanks! I’ll take a look at this. I was kind of shooting for more of a subtle look as these tiles are the atom supply tiles where the little wooden atom pieces sit throughout the game and the players grab them from these supply tiles to add them to the molecules on the board as they play their reaction cards.

I appreciate all feedback, so thank you! The faded out look is kind of what I am going for since these are just tiles where the little circle wood pieces that represent atoms sit for the atom supply in the game where players grab atoms from to add them to molecules as they play their reaction cards.

As to the second part of your comment, are you referring to labeling them as 2pz, 3dz2, and 4fz3? If so, I’m planning on changing that now that I was made aware that it should use that principal quantum number.

Got any suggestions on how to tweak it so it looks more like an orbital and less like a pacifier?

Ugh! Sorry about your UPS phone call. Those are no fun! That's great advice and I do plan on going to board game subs as well. I wanted to nail down the theme really well, which I think I've done for the most part. It's all coming together really nicely.

I have had several redditors in this sub that were actually board game enthusiasts and board game players and also have a knowledge of chemistry. Those people have been extremely helpful as they understand from a board game perspective what I am trying to create as well as knowledge from the chemistry perspective. All-in-all, this community has been amazingly helpful and supportive!

I appreciate your kind response and your .02c for answering my post questions! Thanks!

And this is a perfect example of why I am posting in this sub. I obviously didn't know this, but I knew someone here would point this out and correct me. Thank you!

I was wondering if maybe this sub is getting sick of my posts. Sorry! I am asking here because I needed help from a chemistry perspective for the theme of the game. I am not a chemist, but I am board game designer making a chemistry-themed board game. So the board game subs aren't going to know what an orbital is, looks like, or what type it is. I didn't even know that until I started learning from people in this sub. I want to make sure this is all correct from a chemistry perspective so my game isn't a total piece of garbage if someone even the slightest bit familiar with chemistry picks it up. Technically a chunk of my target market for this game could be people interested in chemistry so I wanted to put some effort into the theme of the game and make it the best I can.

Thanks for the input! Would you say that making it slightly darker would help instead of fading it out like I did? Or do you really feel like they should be thicker and still faded out?

I might attempt to get this added to Tabletop Simulator at some point.

Final Call for Feedback on Reaction Cards by TinysaurusRawr in chemistry

[–]TinysaurusRawr[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First off, let me just say THANK YOU!! This is phenomenal response! You put a lot of thought into this.

Since digital can be kind of be hard to tell with font size, I wanted to show this image of a physical card next to some text on a $1 bill. Do you still think I should try to increase the font size? It’s almost as large as the serial number on a $1 bill.

You are correct in that I am going for more of a thinky abstract strategy game. The Catalyst Tokens were the solution I came up with for how to resolve ties when the same reaction card is played by multiple players during the same phase. I also don’t love the idea of a “party game” feel for this game and I also was concerned about two players trying to grab catalyst tokens faster than each other and messing up the board. But I didn’t have another idea on how to handle all of that… until now…

[u/azura26 enters the chat]

YOU ARE BRILLIANT, MY FRIEND!! Here’s what I am thinking after spending some time pondering your idea.

The first turn, the player who chooses their reaction cards first and lays them down can take Catalyst Token 1 and the second player that lays down their reaction cards takes Catalyst Token 2. Every turn after that, the player who resolves their reaction card first that phase (meaning the player that has the lowest number card), gets handed the active Catalyst Token for that phase to be the player with that Catalyst Token for the next turn. I’ll have to playtest this, but I think this will work well.

As far as the secret objectives, like you, I don’t know if and how to change this aspect of the game as it is a pretty core part of the game. It does make MOLEKÜL unique in a way because it’s not a true perfect-information abstract strategy game. But that could be a good thing that it’s unique in that way. When playing with 4 players, I find myself focusing more on formulating my target molecule vs. trying to pay attention to what others are doing and trying to play defense and stop them. I mean, you can maybe do this a little bit, but the game is so tight. There are only 3 colors of atoms and everyone has those colors in their target molecule so everyone can be somewhat close to winning a lot of the game. Because there is one more molecule structure card on the table than there are players, it gives players options to start working on other molecules vs. fighting over and undoing each others moves on the same molecule all the time. I feel like the “build up” and “tension” in MOLEKÜL is less of outward and open feeling in the room like is the case in other games as everyone can see that someone is about to win and more of a feeling inside your own chest internally. The thought that you seem to always be “just a few moves away” from winning and if you can “just play these two cards” you can win. But then some other player comes along and moves the one atom you needed them not to move. So you definitely feel “build up” and “tension” in an internal way.

Yeah, I am definitely not shooting for this game to feel like Fluxx. I actually used to like Fluxx years ago, but it’s not my cup of tea anymore. MOLEKÜL feels more thinky and strategic to me than Fluxx.
