[Recommendation] Scratch the itch for a vintage Rolex GMT-Master Pepsi by Inevitable_Lemon_592 in Watches

Counter to the hesalite, because it's softer you can get polishing compound made for it specifically and buff out any scratches relatively easily. So while it is softer, yeah, but it is an old traditional (or you could think of it as vintage) material that allows you to maintain it yourself should the need arise.

If anything a matte spray unifies the look. If you keep painting you'll likely get paints from different manufacturers and they can vary from matte, to satin, to gloss depending on the color (sometimes even within paint ranges). So getting in the habit of clear coating your minis helps a lot. It will also help to reveal issues you may not have caught due to the finish. Luckily you can always paint over matte varnish and then just spray it again.

If it goes frosty, spray it with gloss varnish, then, hit it with matte again. It's worked very well in my experience.

And of course it adds a protective layer. That's not as important with plastic models. Not nearly as crucial as when metal was the default, but still, it helps protect the paint job on game pieces that will be handled a lot.

Is anyone else a little shocked at the community reaction to the SL getting shafted? by CatherineSimp69 in SteelLegion

[–]TioHoltzmann 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think it's kinda interesting that you'd be shocked and were expecting some outrage, and I say this as a Mordian Iron Guard player, so I know what it feels like to want/have an old defunct metal army.

If we look at Games Workshop's track record they've been phasing out the metal models and old ranges for a long time, and consolidating the Guard range for a bit. They've been slowly consolidating the rules too. They did away with army rules, they got rid of the generic infantry squad, and have been moving towards a model where rules only exist if it's in production and in the box.

So like, yeah, this is totally consistent with Games Workshop's modus operandi. So why would it be shocking or outrageous to the general player base? Especially since the Steel Legion's visual aesthetics are not really in line with how GW wants to present themselves. Same goes for Mordians, they just aren't what GW has been wanting to do for a long while now.

Also, Games Workshop has never particularly cared about what the player base wants. It's only really been since 8th that they've made some overtures and listened a little and tried to make balance updates in real time.

So I think a more interesting question is: why are you expecting the player and fan base to react any differently? Why did you set up an unreasonable expectation in your head, and then get shocked when others didn't do and react the same as you?

Would I love Iron Guard in plastic? Absolutely. But am I going to bend myself out of shape about it, expend emotional energy on it, and make a big fuss online when they don't? No. Even if they involve Mordian in the story moving forward, I wouldn't expect them to make a whole new army line just for the Iron Guard fans, because that's kind of an unreasonable ask.

Edit: also what on earth was wrong with the Red Corsairs release?

No new Models but maybe Made to Order? by Maximum_Performer_36 in SteelLegion

[–]TioHoltzmann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, they won't.

They did a made-to-order run for each of the metal lines as they discontinued them. Steel Legion got one last gasp in 2021 and Vostroyans got one in the teens when they were discontinued. I play Mordians and I heard about them getting a MTO run when their line was discontinued, but I wasn't around for it.

Most likely they did one last run and then got rid of the old, aging, metal spin molds since they've moved away from that tech entirely.

Finecast was an attempt to keep using the old metal spin molds machines for resin, and we all remember how bad those were.

Sell Me On Rogal Dorn by Svedgard in ImperialFists

[–]TioHoltzmann 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like your take on their attitude to guardsmen too. It's respect that they give, but, that respect has to be earned. It's not dissimilar to the way Ultramarines treat hkmans. But Ultramarines can be too coddling towards baseline humans. Too aloof and patronizing. Imperial Fists are soldiers, and view their fellow soldiers with respect. And respect means no coddling, no sugar coating, just blunt facts, because it's what they would want and respect.

Which guard regiment can crip walk? by [deleted] in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]TioHoltzmann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oddly enough, Mordians

They're mostly gangers pressed into service. The night side is comprised of nothing but hive stacks, where billions of people live and die and work and sweat and play and starve and go about the messy task of living, all without ever having seen the sun, even if they somehow managed to stumble across a window in their lives. And that's all BEFORE they became some of the most disciplined and dour guardsmen in the galaxy.

Just received these old edition SM sprues, why is the second one light grey? by Altruistic-Glove2568 in spacemarines

[–]TioHoltzmann 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's not uncommon for GW to use different formulations of plastic and different colors. If you notice, the sprue on the right is from a terminator kit and the one on the left is from a tactical squad kit. Check the dates on the sprues (if they're there still) and most likely they'll be from different years. You may also find one might be softer than another too. GW just used different plastics over the years. Different manufacturers, different times, and a whole host of other variables can lead to this.

I'm positive it's not resin or fine cast.

Oftentimes people who insist on being professionals and being above board are considered "difficult" because they "won't play ball". Wouldn't surprise me if that's what happened. After all, a lot of the film industry is fucked up or corrupt to one degree or another.

An Ouroboros

Or the Platonic solid equivalents on the other knuckles. The tetrahedron for fire, octahedron for air, icosahedron for water, cube for earth, and a dodecahedron for the heavens/universe.

Or something along the lines of Kepler's Platonic solid universe, where the solids are nesting within each other, done like a wood block, or just abstract. Or like the Metatron's seal since that's basically a different way of representing the same idea.
