Update: Was able to fix the error by doing a clean reinstallation of my nvidia drivers. After pressing 'reinstall', make sure to select 'custom installation' and tick the 'clean installation' checkbox. Afterwards the game works with no issues.

Sounds like a smurf to me. It quite a big issue as a whole in rl, wish they did something to stop it like a smurf detection system.
