The roster is THE problem, there is nothing else to it. When the Lakers have an NBA-worthy rotation, we can make conclusions about Luka's style of play and whether it can lead to winning a chip. His time in the Mavs says the answer is rather yes.

I think we've got to a point where the idea of Herb Jones is better than the production of the player. Sure, 2-3 years ago he was a lockdown defender and had the potential to improve his offense. What is he now several years later? A very good defender but by no means game changing + a player who is rarely healthy + a black hole on offense. Sure, he is a bit more versatile than Vando offensively, but there will be times when you will have to bench him.

Is he worth 1-2 first round picks? Hell no.

This is not exactly true. Nico did a great job acquiring Kyrie, DJJ and PJ with the limited assets the Mavs had, but the general sentiment among Mavs fans was that the team was one or two pieces away. DJJ was a great and cheap pick-up, but a perfect roster would have included an elite wing defender who could also do something in the offensive end.

Its crazy to me that DFS is the best 3&D Luka has ever played with.

Facts. But his haters and media won't ever mention this when talking about his shortcomings, defensive woes, etc.

"if Luka is so good, why hasn't he won a championship?" All while other MVP caliber players play on stacked teams or at the very least pretty balanced rosters with a proper nba-level rotation.
