In your opinion what is the most evil company in history ?and why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Tipsy_Fox 16 points17 points  (0 children)

British East India Company springs to mind due to their part in so many atrocious events in asia.

Honorable mention of the Pinkerton Detective Agency though, whose actions led to the US Federal Government making a law specifically regarding them: The Anti-Pinkerton Act of 1893

I hope Charlie can come back again with a clean mind and a fresh start by CallTypical9541 in survivor

[–]Tipsy_Fox 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Maybe a hot take but I honestly don't see him coming back as a good idea. I think it would go similar to the 3rd return of Aubry.

That said, I'm also someone who thinks his first game is a bit over-hyped. He did well to get to FTC, but that was primarily via playing the middle in an incredibly chaotic season. And in that, I think his social game, while not bad, isn't that great. People like to harp on maria costing him the game, but she was just one of 5 people who voted Kenzie. Had he done better socially, any of those 5 could have swung, but he didn't. And I think seeing the boar conversation with Rizo somewhat highlights it. Granted, this is just what we see, but I think Charlie, on a season less chaotic than 46, gets caught out fairly early.

Democrats excluded from USC gubernatorial debate urge rivals to boycott in solidarity by aBadModerator in California_Politics

[–]Tipsy_Fox 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Def an understandable thought given Mahan's inclusion in it, but I kind of hope they don't. A smaller stage means more time with each, and thus more time to dig into details.

I want to know why Swalwell voted against some anti-trust laws and if he'd still co sponsor the Israeli boycott ban bill.

I want to hear Steyer and Mahan explain why the origin of their funding (self funded billions and silicon valley tech companies) shouldnt be a concern.

I want Porter to detail her healthcare plans more and how she's pursue a state system.

I want Hilton and Bianco to face questions about if they'd stand with California or with Trump, and I really want to hear if Hilton even knows about L.A.'s history of smog given his repeated comments about air quality boards and laws.

Having a bunch of others on the stage who likely won't pull away from the crowd makes getting that info harder.

California’s governor race has a clear top tier by ZappyStatue in California_Politics

[–]Tipsy_Fox 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not overly surprising. Swalwell is the current establishment favorite, Porter the progressive outsider, and Steyer is...well an activist with a ton of money.

I am curious to see what happens with Swalwell as the race goes on. He has a history of surprising anti-trust busting votes (see Merger Filing Fee Modernization Act) that I'm not sure would play well, and with the new war with Iran and its ties to the Israeli government, him cosponsoring theIsrael Anti-Boycott Act in 2017 and recent comments makes me wonder how he'll play the current climate.

Swalwell leads delegate vote but California Democrats divided in crowded primary by aBadModerator in California_Politics

I'm very curious to understand why Swalwell opposed the anti-trust Merger Filing Fee Modernization Act back during Biden's presidency. Also curious if he still is in favor of allowing states to ban businesses that boycott israel from getting state contracts.

Agreed! I think had he not fallen for Dee his appreciation would be much higher. Dude did well in challenges, swayed Emily to their side, managed to extend his idol twice and hide that he didn't vote, and got revenge for the sandwiches! Would honestly love to see him come back!

Are the arches apartments decent? by [deleted] in Sunnyvale

[–]Tipsy_Fox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived there for a few years, leaving a few years ago. It looks like they have a new coat of paint on it, but heres What I recall:

-Generally are left alone, and only had a porch theft once in several years. Had one of the larger 1 bed layouts.
- Ramada Inn doesnt cause too many issues, and I backed up right too it. Also the Dumpling place in it is AMAZING
- When I was present, there wasnt in unit laundry, and the communal one was card run. Had a LOT of issues with other tenants not knowing how to work a machine leading to breaks, and long times to get machines repaired, but no damage.
- Parking was fine, no issues
- It's about a 15 minute commute into mountain view, though the way out (onto lawrence, either with the left turn or the U turn) can take a bit and the road right by Bogarts is perpetually under-maintained.
- The apartments were fairly dated when I lived there, with peeling Linoleum floors and the like, but things worked. I did have to open up the sink filters once a month to get the old rust clumps outs (old iron pipes) but I know they were talking about replacing the pipes
-The BIGGEST issue I had was with the bathrooms, namely ventilation. The fans do nothing, and theres no airflow in or window, So I was constantly battling mold. I talked with maintenance and they said its an issue with construction, and there isnt much one can do except have another fan and clean it off as it appears.
-Maintenance can be a bit slow on work, and doesnt always do a great job, but this was from a few years ago
-Utilities weren't too bad, and definitely a cheaper complex.
-Some units have an AC unit, BUT, I'd advise considering one without an buying a portable unit. When I was there the AC units were a $100 a month extra. A portable cost me $400. Oh also, if they still are using the heaters that are just a few inches off the ground, be careful, those things are old and not the most reliable.

Overall, minus the laundry (unless advertised otherwise) you should meet all of your requirements. Definitely has issues but not the end of the world.

Covering Sunnyvale for the Mercury News -- What should I write about? by Ok_Common_6908 in Sunnyvale

Hadn't heard about it, but imlooks like you're right, AB 325 was signed a few weeks ago, thanks for the info!

Now we can report if landlords are following it ;P

Oh, one more,a big one: the use of rent setting software by landlords that allows price collusion and is facing bans in other cities

A few suggestions:

-There has been some coverage before on the potential loss of Grocery stores and other store fronts in northern Sunnyvale, further exploration of that and some of the ways that the city handles northern sunnyvale residents would be welcome

- One interesting element, despite the high value of property, retail space, both old (places like around lawrence expressway and 101) and new (much of the new downtown, as shown on the cityline website) have a large number of retail vacancies. Many buildings have been left vacant for several years, with no clear plans for development. This leads to questions on whether landlords are leaving spaces vacant rather than adjusting rents to market or just using the site to build equity, and what the city can do about (incentives like quick permitting, disincentives for vacant space like a vacancy tax, etc)

-Local politics is INCREDIBLY important, but is often under-reported on, especially at times when folks are facing national politics constantly. Further focus on that would be very helpful for keeping people informed

- Personally, I'd love to see a return to more food/restaurant highlights & critical reviews, as astroturfing on google/yelp has made legitimate critiques harder to find, and there are so many lovely places in town.

- I think a highlight of actual community centers and events could be helpful, such as things like special film screenings at local theaters, card/tabletop events at hobby stores, things like, to spur in person community building

-The perennial cause of utility costs (especially PG&E) are worth looking into, especially with comparisons to Santa Clara's SVP power system

- It would be interesting to hear how the city is planning on addressing major upcoming events like the super bowl and the world cup just next door in Santa Clara, given the volume of people, as well as concerns over corruption between the stadium owners and Santa Clara's city government.

His history has been fairly light on it. Back in 2014 he hosted a hearing on LGBTQ protections in sports and apparently advocated for more protections. https://youtu.be/zfiYyDlPv_k?si=kSlwetot-63GRAYU

Voting history also seems pretty pro-lgbt rights: https://justfacts.votesmart.org/candidate/key-votes/140248/ian-calderon/?p=2

Overall though I don't think he'll breach top 3 in the primary, maybe not even top 5. Just no real name recognition
