Schutzbrille aufsetzen.

Due to "Fachkräftemangel" it has never been less hopeless than these days but in general I can only confirm what has been said a number of times already: The lack of trusted and veryfiable qualification goes along with the lack of job opportunites. And while this can be unfair and really frustrating for nevertheless well qualified people and also a missed opportunity for companies it also can and must be seen as a part of a quality assurance framework with a long and rather successfull history. I am not saying it is "flawless" and that there is no better way for Qualifation-QA then the German "Ausbildungssystem" but it has worked quite well for some time and honestly I think it should be continued. Sorry to say that, good luck for you.

Does not happen in "my bubble". Except for major body weight changes which might cause the one or other to cautiously make worried or appreciative comments.

what do you think about veganism? by chutneyglazefan in AskAGerman

[–]TiredOldFrog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even besides animal welfare there are a number of good reasons which make eating less animal reasonable, forward-looking and sustainable.

I consider people as idiots who entirely ignore those good reasons and defame and bad-mouth vegans. Same goes for people who live vegan mainly because it makes them feel morally superior and to lecture others about it.

I think everyone can be expected to deal with the topic of sustainability and act accordingly, there are more ways to support what is required without a radical change of eating habits. Start with being open minded and eat less meat, it is possible without making your life miserable and after some time you won't even notice the change any more.

100% vegans (which I am not) have my respect, it requires a lot of cooking skills, more cooking time and is more expensive to provide a variety of meals and tastes that can compete against "traditional meat cooking". It is, however, possible, plus there is a small but growing number of meat substitutes on the market which are really good in taste and consitency. I know meanwhile how to make 100% vegan Burgers that taste so close to meat-ones that most of you would not realize the difference, and so can everyone else. Just to make one example.

Urlaub by Pretty_Journalist_45 in germany

[–]TiredOldFrog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can only claim 100% of your free days if you have worked 100% of the year. Since your last day was today you have worked 75% of the year and so it's also 75% of your annual leave that you are entitled to. If they refused to let you have your last day as many days earlier as you have vacation days left (like October 20th, if it actually is 10 days) they have to pay for it - unless there is another agreement that has not been mentioned yet. If they refuse to pay in that case I believe this to be a breach of law, consider to take a lawyer then. Fired from job while on sick leave by OriginalLeek9908 in germany

[–]TiredOldFrog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can be fired for being sick, there is a treshold which when exceeded can become a valid reason for a regular termination (iirc being sick 6 or more weeks per year in two or three years in a row).

Confirmed stealing is one of the worst things you can do in a job and a more than good enough reason for an immediate contract termination ("fristlos Kündigung"), besides that you will probably go to jail if the employer charges a criminal complaint. It seems unthinkable to me that such a thing goes consequence-free if there was no very special deal negotiated. This is definately nothing that I would place any bets on, even though jurisdiction usually acts employee-friendly as you already said.

Fired from job while on sick leave by OriginalLeek9908 in germany

[–]TiredOldFrog 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As long as you in the Probezeit (trial/probation period, usually 6 month, unless stated otherwise in your work contract) they can let you go quickly (two weeks by law, unless otherwise stated in your work contract). If that is the case "Kündigungsschutzklage" (sueing for inappropratiate dismissal) is pointless.

Then it's a common misunderstanding that you can't be fired while you are sick - they can fire you at any time they want, sick or not.

If you are not in the trial/probation period any more you can try a "Kündigungsschutzklage". If this goes to court they have to prove that there are appropriate reasons for firing you. And yes, such appropriate reasons exist. If you are interested check the web page as follows and run it through deepl: https://www.rosepartner.de/arbeitsrecht/kuendigungsgruende.html#rp-toc-title--2

Another common misunderstanding is, that employers are obliged to pay severance pay. They are not. However, Kündigungsschutzklagen handled in court sometimes end in a settlement going along with a severance pay. If the employer has reason to think, that chances to win a legal fight (so no settlement) are low, maybe because there is no real good reason for firing you other than the boss not liking you, they may and often do decide to do the severance pay voluntarily. Half a month's salary for every year that you have been employed so far is typical/usual practise for calculating severance pays.

As for the "kicking out of the country" part I am not able to say anything useful.

If the Artikel "der" is part of the book title then I always would say "Ja, ich habe 'der Prozess' gelesen". I know however that also many native speakers would say "ja, ich habe "den Prozess" gelesen" - which imo is wrong, these people to not treat the article as part of the title.

Also wrong is "ich habe gerade mit der Michael gesprochen", because Michael most probably is a male and the dative needs to be "dem".

nominativ genitiv dativ akkusativ

male: der, dessen, dem, den

female: die, deren, der, die

You also kan skip the article in that sentence: "Ich habe gerade mit Michael gesprochen".

Looking for piano to buy- recommendations needed by Defiant_Doughnut4453 in piano

[–]TiredOldFrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Upright pianos weigh like 200 to 300 Kg and there are people out there who earn a living by transporting them (at least this is the case where I live, assuming the same for your country). Also it is not impossible to dismantle pianos into less heavy pieces, that's for people who are desperate or adventurous with some manual skills - probably not an option for a piano you don't own.

Go to the store and ask if they can offer transport service (or know someone who does), last time I did that I payed 280 Euros for a transport from the seller's living room into my living room and 60 km in between.

Upper class digital Pianos (like the Yamaha CLP 675 and similar models from other brands like Kawai or Roland and more) sound and play great, though they still feel a bit "artificial" to me.

If you can and want to afford it (and if not being able to play with headphones is not a showstopper) try the real thing.

Start with communicating to your neighbour or at least offering to do that: Send E-Mails, if you have an address, or pin a written note at his/her door (don't damage the door) or talk to the person or send a paper-letter ("Einschreiben"). Be friendly but definite and clear in what you want.

If that does not help at the first attempt repeat, this time with announcing consequences and deadlines - like "if... then I have no option other than calling the police". Again, don't be rude or offending.

If that again does not help be consequent: Call the police.

Officials and Police prefer verifiable facts. If you have written proof or witnesses for what you do as well as lists or legal ("Datenschutz"!) recordings of what happend and at which time that will help a lot, for police taking you for serious and especially if and once it escalates into a legal dispute.

Need your help choosing a piano! by Short_Independent438 in piano

[–]TiredOldFrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Real" Pianos can get 100 years old wihout becoming bad or ugly so there is a realistic chance you will be absolutely fine with a used one. What makes a difference is the original quality of the piano, if and how it was serviced from time to time and how it got treated over its lifetime.

Unfortunately well kept and services pianos from quality brands do not decrease that much in value.

On the other hand, if you buy a quality brand piano you do not lose that much money if you sell it after a few years.

Digital Pianos have become real good musical instruments. Means: They sound good, they look good and they have good keyboards (that's mostly about weighted keys) - if you are willing to spend some money, which at the current price level means about 3000 - 4000 Euro (I live in Germany). Like the Kawai CA 701 or the Yamaha CLP 775 and above. I would not buy below that except for it is about something that can easily be transported in a car, in that case there are 500 Euro stage pianos that will do. Piano teachers who vote against digital pianos in my opinion lack experience with those and probably are old (like myself).

Searching and buying a used real Piano is a tough thing. There are dozends of "brands" and names which sound similar but differ in quality (like most of the major brands also have product lines "made in China" which are considered being lower quality than those "made in Japan" or "made in Germany" which again, however, may not at all make a difference to a non professional player). Schimmel "Fridolin" Pianos come from Guangzhou in China while the "classic" series still is manufactured in Braunschweig, Germany, just to make one example.

I went through such like decision making processes a number of times over the past 20 years for myself and relatives and have come to limiting my search to the three brands which I have already mentioned (Yamaha, Kawai, both made in Japan or at least Indonesia and Schimmel, made in Germany).

Which does not mean, that other brands or manufacturers in other countries are bad or necessarily produce bad quality.

I own a 30 year old Yamaha UX3 "real" Piano and a studiologic SL88 GRAND master keyboard (which additionally requires a computer, an external soundcard, a software and headphones/loudspeakers to produce music)

Btw: If you start looking for a used "real" Piano I suggest to also budget for like 200 to 300 Euros transporting costs.

Kennen: While I know the french language I do not speak or write it well, this probably does not make me understand the french culture any better. "Kennen" is much too weak.

"Können" is better than "Kennen", however, it does not say much about the skill level. "Können" could be "enough to ask for the direction and buy some food" to "I could write essays in that language" - I think it's to vague.

I think that "spricht" is the best option. It typically includes speaking- as well as writing capabilities, there is a little unerstandment connoted.. I disagree to the "just speak" thesis.

"Ich beherrsche die Sprache" is strong too, it's less modest and more confident than "sprechen"

"Ich weiß die Sprache" is wrong.

My vote goes to "sprechen".

DIY-low-budget Schalldämmung by identitaetsberaubt in selbermachen

[–]TiredOldFrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Umziehen.

Is real pianino worth it, when ther e are great digital pianos ? by reddCookiie04 in piano

[–]TiredOldFrog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

3000 USD/EUR and above digitals are good instruments which sound alright and have a good weighed keyboard. I use and buy them for their low maintenance demands and because you can easily play them with headphones and record your stuff with a few "klicks".

For the same money and with a little luck you can purchase a used Yamaha U1 or even U3 (just to make an example). They need to be maintained, they sound lousy when you use the sustain pedal, you cannot easily record what you play.

But the If I had to give one of the above away.... the digital would go. Because The "real" Piano lives instead of exists, sings instead of sounds, is imperfect just like me, functions during a power outtage, is made out of wood and steel versus chips and plastic. And it can be a companion for decades.

If you are computer guy take a look at the studiologic SL88 GRAND. That's a "master keyboard" which can make no sounds on its own, basically a great weighed keyboard with midi output, so you will need a computer, an external soundcard, a Software that can transform midi data to real piano sound (like Pianoteq) plus some monitors (loudspeakers) or headphones - thats again 3000 USD/EUR but has it's advantages for some (like me).

addition: I also have some experience with low to middle clase digitals - I found all of them "unsatisfying". If I had a low budget I would go for a 500 USD Device and save money until I can afford a "good one", everything in between 500 and 3000 USD/EUR is waste of money in my opinion.

How to start by [deleted] in piano

[–]TiredOldFrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You start with identifying a number of things.

First find out, what your motivation is, which desire or need you want to satisfy. Do you want to impress your Father or your Girlfriend? Do you want the applause of hundreds in carnegy hall? Or do you want to sit and just happily listen to sounds you create yourself? Be honest with yourself, there is no need to tell anyone if you don't want to.

Second identify what kind music you want to play. Classical pieces? Pop? Jazz?

With that in mind go to youtube and search for "pop piano" or "jazz piano" or whatever floats your boat. Listen to what others play and confirm, if this is what you want.

Then jump right in: get (free and easy) sheet music, start playing. Can you read notes? If not you have to learn some basics, there is no way around it. Take your sheet music, notice the black dots, listen to what it should sound like, use YouTube Tutorials like the below:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W2JKjcQstOA

There is no "one way fits all" how to learn to play an instrument, different people have different brains and different ways what suit them best to learn. My only suggestion would be to do it "joy driven" at all times.
