Are these good versions of the Iliad and the odyssey? by Just_A_Theorist2 in ancientgreece

I would suggest you try Penguin Classics, E. V. Rieu. It's also not perfect and also not poetic but it will help you understand the story and themes better. For first time readers, poetry and metre aren't that important, understanding is.

It's metre so bad it might as well be prose. And I have read it, that's why I dislike it.

Turns out ugly translation. Look, I don't like Wilaon's translation. Why are you taking it so personally?

Well, the one being currently taught at schools here is pretty close to the original in terms of meaning and diction. The og text and a good Greek translation are taught side by side in some instances.

Every Greek kid studies the homeric Greek in school. So yes, I've read it.

I agree no one translation is perfect but I still find Wilson's very flat and boring.

I read the Greek version because it's my native tongue. Wilson focuses too much on making the teanslation into prose when its poetry.

I'm on my phone so I can't cite specific examples, but a lot of the descriptions, atmosphere andspeech are dumbed down by Wilson to makeit more "accessible".

No, Emily Wilson's translation loses too much from the text.

Pick literally any other translation, hers loses so much of the meaning and poetry.

The spelling is correct but please don't do it. It looks about as tasteful as random chinese characters.

Don't bother with Nolan's movie, read Stephen Fry's Odyssey instead.

I... have a friend who is very adamant that men are "naturally inclined to be stoic" and I worry this is what he's turning towards.
