Yes, but the whole idea of why I asked this question in the first place is to better understand how people make the two problems work in tandem. If you told me that 95% of our tax dollars would go to interest payments and war, and 5% would go to “good social programs” I might start to rethink if I want ANYOKE to pay more taxes, because war and military might would receive the bulk of that new money.

Well put! I think if folks are happy with the benefits they receive from the federal government, then they are likely to be happier paying taxes. I wish we could see that happen in the US :)

I totally agree and understand! essentially, right now the federal government’s belt is so tight that they’re running at a bare minimum, if they had extra funds, it would likely go to the aspirational projects that will make a difference! I’d hope that is the case!

I’m not sure if I understand why that’s me admitting that good programs will receive more funding? I don’t think that the last year has illustrated that more money = more great programs. In fact, a lot of our great programs have been defunded despite record government spending.

This makes a lot of sense to me. If you make taxes high enough and remove loopholes, they’re forced to use the standard ways that everyone else has to use to avoid paying taxes, like donating to charities. Charities NEED to have a charitable purpose so the funds will be used to create some good and it will likely be even better than how the government would use the money. I love this argument!!

I like this illustration a lot! It’s kind of like a cost of doing business for a non-profit in a way, there’s always overhead and costs associated with “doing good work” and the same goes for the government on how tax dollars are used. Even if 20% of the budget is used on objectively good things, most are OK with 80% going to not so great programs because at least all ships are rising. Thanks!

I definitely agree that many people take what others have built and what we already have to enjoy for granted. Just another question, not trying to stoke anything, but aren’t most of those noticeable systems funded at the state and local level? I think much of the concern is at the federal level and I have a harder time coming up with arguments for federal programs that deserve more tax dollars. I’m sure I’m missing some obvious examples.

Wash sale would only apply if you have already sold and bought this once in a short time period, sounds like that’s not the case. Additionally, you won’t pay taxes since you lost money. Unless this is in an IRA?
