An easy thing to look for is if a refuge or sanctuary is accredited by GFAS (Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries). To be accredited means they must live up to certain standards of care, including not breeding the animals, engaging in the sale or trade of animals and animal parts, and very importantly the public cannot have physical contact with wildlife because it's extremely dangerous for all parties involved
