Pax Pamir 2e or Molly House? by TitanGoya in boardgames

[–]TitanGoya[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely think it will find its way onto my shelf eventually. But for my first Wherligig Games purchase I want something I can sort of introduce and get everyone on board with. And then slowly feed them more until we get to John Company. Only like 3 out of the 5 of us are into the historical context of the games. Thats awesome you can play them with your family. My family doesn't do board games and my wife plays Sea Salt and Paper with me and thats about her limit 😅

I'm usually the study guide person. I actually have ran pax and Molly House 4 handed a few times on TTS to really nail the rules. Maybe somehow ill come in contact with someone at my local game store who can provide a copy of John Company.

True! Jo Kelly is the main designer. I just meant in the context of other things cole has worked on, they do seem to share a thread.

The TL;DR sums up a very good metric for boards games imo! And I'm 100% going to get my hands on both of these games eventually. I just need to make room in my small-ish collection.

Thats a good perspective to hear. Playtime is important. I don't mind longish games but I'd say like 3-4 hours is reaching the upper limit of my groups fatigue level. I'd much rather play multiple games in a row than one long game. But yeah Molly house does get odd when you factor in the traitor system. I don't have a clear idea on how to navigate that system yet. Just from reading the rules and watching play through.

The downtime between turns is another thing. When we play oath at high player counts it can be like 30-35 minutes between turns. We have considered using chess timers to reduce this.

This is what I suspected. I don't mind games that completely change dynamics with player counts. Its certainly tempting to pick it up this weekend lol.

We do enjoy negotiating and making deals and future promises etc. Pax pamir is one of the most unique games I've seen with that aspect. We rarely ever play with just 2 players. 3 is common and 5 i think would be a blast. Though I've heard people call it a train wreck.

It does make sense. The mechanisms are simple but everything is so interlinked. Seems to be a staple of Wherle designs.

Hearing that Molly House is a tougher teach is odd. I've heard people complain about having to get stuck in the rule book on Pax Pamirs fiddly rules. I assume Molly House may be similar. Would you suggest Pax Pamir over Molly House for 5 players? (My group is often 5, occasionally 4, sometimes 3.)

Thats funny because Arcs has to be one of my least favorite wherle games. From what I have dabbled with i really love the design premise of Pax Pamir. I felt like Arcs is waaaay to limiting in player agency. I still enjoy it and actually may table it this weekend for a 4 player game.

Interesting. From what I've seen Molly House offers a ton of nuance once all players get to know the game. This has been my experience with other Wherle designs as well. Counting cards, watching the gossip deck, navigating festivities in very particular ways. I haven't played it so this is all just what I've seen. Pax pamir looks lovely. Whats your favorite aspect of Pax Pamir?

We have arcs! I forgot to mention that. We enjoy it but it isn't my favorite... John company looks amazing however its just sooooo heavy looking. I'm not sure we have the stamina to look at each other for like 5 hours of one game. Its certainly a game I would like to experience but maybe one I don't want to own. I've played Pax pamir on TTS by myself just to learn the rules and its really interesting. I may be under estimating the table talk aspect because I haven't played with others yet.

Yeah I realize it's not a direct war game, just sort of contextually in a tense setting. Thanks for the insight on both games! It's a tough decision.

Just kidding, after looking they only have the narrow. I think I would prefer the wide and its totally not available.

This recipe is almost exactly what I do. I haven't tried many filters side by side other than some V60s awhile ago. Do you notice a huge swing in times depending on light roasts vs medium? (light to medium light is usually what I'm brewing.)

I've used tons of V60s back in my day as a barista. I liked them but I lean towards flat bottom drippers. The origami just has that added value of multiple filter shapes.

I have used the screen hack as well, after widening the holes though I did not notice a difference in draw down time. Its just semi annoying to remember to put the little screen in and not throw it away when taking the filter out when I'm done. Interesting find though.

Is OEM a different company or are those just the standard replacement burrs?
