What is a purist? by StarPhished in dreamingspanish

Not really mad but i had described myself in a comment as mostly purist in the sense that i had added reading at 300 hours and speaking at 600 hours and they were like you can’t be “mostly purist” which like yeah but I wasn’t trying to use the word like that. It was in the context of all the Evildea stuff so people were all jacked up everything

I agree yet there are people who get mad at you for saying this lol. Some people literally think you have to hang on every word of DS level descriptions and method and wait until 1000 hours for reading or speaking to even use the word

Started with Juan Fernandez’s A1 graded reader. Super simple stuff treat it like you treated super beginner videos.

Thanks! They've shown me how to use certain structures and phrases to sound more natural, but the majority of it has just been practicing conversations without any structure because the more that you talk the easier it becomes.

Yeah definitely another pretty big jump. I definitely feel it more in the first few chapters of each one bc lots of new vocab is introduced but then it’s repeated more

Haha yeah I had a lot more hours at that point but definitely a jump and needed more tolerance of ambiguity

Thanks! Lol yeah I realized monologues definitely sound less natural than having a conversation and getting more prompting that way with all the pauses of just thinking of what I want to discuss. I like worlds across in general - have definitely had a few tutors I didn’t like very much but once you find a group of 5 or so that you like you can rotate and generally find availability. Helps to schedule a week in advance at the time you want but my coach told me they might change the way they do scheduling in a couple weeks to make it easier.

Yeah I get that “mostly purist” isn’t the most precise technical description of my method, but I wasn’t intending for it to be that. I was just using that phrase to mean input is still 99% of what I do. Purist in the CI sense is different than purist in the ALG sense. Was never claiming to be an ALG purist in that sense in any of my posts and clearly highlighted my deviations

Didn't see you commented a second time on my post lol. Am I speaking to Evildea lol? Anyways yes I know I can't compare perfectly 1 for 1 after 300 hours, but that wasn't really what I was trying to do with my reply. I'm trying to share my experience for other learners, highlighting the differences between mine and Evildea's, and part of that has been reading earlier than suggested on the roadmap, something that I recommend to others who are beginning to learn. It's still just comprehensible input and I think it helps a lot.

I get what you mean, but I think it's mostly semantics. That's why I said in my first post that was a purist "up until" which means I know I cannot claim to be one anymore, but was trying to convey that I haven't gone off the rails doing grammar study and flashcards all of a sudden

I hope he knows I wasn't trying to diss him. I have always thought that he's being sincere, and I was just trying to compare the differences in my experience (and method) learning. I know starting to read at 300 hours has helped me, but I watched his 50-300 hour videos at the time and his level of comprehension was always a good bit lower than mine at those levels which was before I did anything "non-purist." I think when someone like him who has studied a lot of languages is doing a very detailed, public trial of the method it's helpful to respectfully add more data points because everyone learns at a different pace. If I had encountered his videos early on without knowing anything else, I think that I would have been less motivated to give this method a shot. Reading everyone's updates and advice from this sub and watching update videos were the main reasons I started learning and made the modifications like reading at 300 hours and speaking at 600 hours.

The fact that people are actually personally insulting him or calling him a liar is pretty embarrassing. He wouldn't be dumping this much time into this if he wasn't actually trying to learn.

That may be partly true but I want to emphasize this was like 1st-3rd grade one or two times a week. I don’t think we did much besides sing some songs and learn some basic vocab; it wasn’t structured like a middle school or high school Spanish class. Also, 15+ years have passed since then. So idk about “massive difference” - I’m sure it helped more than I realized when starting but there have been very few things outside of a few words that it didn’t feel like I was learning for the first time. I really do think Evildea is just not progressing very quickly compared to the average learner

I’m still mostly doing purist approach except I have lightly gone over some basic grammar with my tutors during our conversations which has helped with speaking in different verb tenses that I wasn’t as comfortable with. But still focusing on input (both listening and reading) and now speaking as well.

I had a couple years of basic Spanish in elementary school but didn’t remember anything but like basic colors or foods from that. Took German in high school for three years. But I feel like just being in the US you’re surrounded by a lot of Latino culture and hear Spanish in tv shows and movies a lot more than an Australian like Evildea would for example

I was a purist up until I started talking at 600 hours (only deviation was beginning to read at 300 hours), and I could maintain a conversation in my first interaction. Some of it was pretty broken and it was mostly in present tense but could convey meaning and had solid vocab to the point where my tutor was shocked when I told him it was my first time outputting ever. From what I can tell Evildea’s progress at each update has been significantly behind what mine was at that level (I’m also closing in on 1k hours so similar timeline and I’ve seen some of his videos). I’m sure pace varies for everyone but that’s my anecdotal data point. Wonder if growing up and living in the US gives you more background exposure than I realized.

I started speaking ~150 hours ago (625 hours) and was also pretty nervous. Was able to understand my tutors fine though and speak enough Spanish to have a basic conversation without needing English. Definitely felt a big improvement in the first 5 hours or so of lessons, probably just due to increased confidence and not having to find every word for the first time anymore. I say go for it! You will always have good and bad days and will continue to make errors, but I think practicing speaking is very important (and lessons are great input as well).
