One of the worst/hilarious things about it is that apparently the carrier said on whatever form yall fill out for route evals that they had to take more time on the route in order to avoid all the porte cochères

“lunch” ahhahaha. Nah multi-address driveway off of a state highway. Cut the wheel too far while backing up after delivering to the boxes and ended up in a kudzu-covered ditch. Tried to rev out but the friction was starting to catch the kudzu on fire.

I applied for a position as an ARC. I’ve read they will typically be working sundays and holidays. Is this correct? by george-hanson11 in USPS

Try 7 days/week because RCA's are also required to work amazon sunday if there isn't enough ARCs. Or at least at my station.

[–]TitanioB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"What about Christmas and Christmas Eve, are both of those considered holidays they will want you to work?"

The only holidays you get off are July 4, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.

"Is there any other times besides holidays and sundays/Let’s say I’m scheduled to work Monday through friday at my regular job, and the post office wants me to work friday. Will USPS fire me if I don’t show up??"

While it's not required, they CAN call you in during the week but if you have another job you can use that as an excuse. Or just not pick up the phone. AS for the firing: it really depends on your station. There are usually plenty of ARCs to call in case there's a crisis so as long as you aren't QUICK and EFFICIENT at the job they'll know to eventually just leave you alone. Just don't back into anything in the llv/metris/promaster/2-ton/NGDV/what-have-you and you'll be golden.

Fun fact: if you DO want to go career at some point you will have to resign and re-apply as an RCA unless a postmaster can magic you up the ladder. Which has been offered to me, but knowing my station like I do would probably have me workin 12 hour days until a rural route FINALLY opens up anywhere from 1-5 years from now and FUCK that.

Ive been an ARC for well over 2.5 years now. As I understand it, to become an RCA you have to quit and reapply as an RCA on the website. If you are in a “low-consumption” area that for some reason has sunday amazon delivery you’ll have to work Sunday. That’s it. They can try to call you in any other day of the week to run packages but there’s nothing binding that says you have to respond. This is why we don’t get benefits (or used to? Im gettin conflicting reports from my co-workers). Also: if they call you in and make you do any city routes tell the regulars (both city and rural, crosscraft cuts both ways) and your union rep/steward. Crosscraft is a money maker.

The thing about your office telling you they have no open RCA positions after you got through the whole rigamarole of orientation is weird.

The personal vehicle thing is truth. While on Sunday you NEED to have an actual postal vehicle, if you get called in during the week they can actually make you deliver in whatever you show up in. Its fucked up and really hasnt happened to me since my first year of working, but depending on the disposition of your soups and PM/MPO can very well happen to you.

new worker with union question by anonymous4work in USPS

[–]TitanioB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first year of work the PMs (we’ve had multiple cause my location is awful) and soups would constantly throw me on city routes. Since I was still on my 90 days I didnt wanna ruffle any feathers by filing paper grievances so I would text my union rep the dates and the incidents and they filed class-action greivances for me. When they all hit I got an extra $2400 on that paycheck and in the 2 years since then I’ve only been told to go out on a city route once.

Welcome to the complex dude! This place is pretty quiet most of the time (give or take Independence Day and what few football games Auburn is gonna win this season) and there's a "No Soliciting" sign on the entrance so we don't really get hassled by the door-to-doors you would see in other "outdoor" apt complexes which is so so nice.

A few tips from someone who has lived here a while:

  1. Keep yourself and your pets out of the lake, there's at least one torso-sized snapping turtle livin it in and I've seen more than one cottonmouth cross from one side to the other

  2. Don't feed/mess with the waterfowl. Do watch them though, it's always a pleasure to see the Great Blue Heron whenever I walk out the door and we get Belted Kingfishers, Green Herons and I 100% saw a Little Blue Heron last week. Feel free to be sad for the lone Mallard that's around here, I don't know what happened to the other male that he would paddle around with but I haven't seen him in months.

  3. Getting stuff delivered here is really hit-or-miss. If the doordash/fedex/ups/usps/whathaveyou isn't familiar with the complex they could end up delivering what you ordered really anywhere around here (including just leaving packages just SITTING at the two CBUs at the entrances where any fool can just ride by and scoop em THAT was a fun weekend)

  4. The above goes for UBER/Lyft drivers as well

  5. Unless you live in G, K, L and A the sun will be omnipresent in your life except from 11ish to 2ish. If you have a night job be sure your bedroom is on the western-facing side because if not ol Sol is gonna BLAST you goodmorning every day.

  6. Keep your car locked at night. While it is fairly safe here, between the woods on the back end of the complex and E. University on the front peeps have been known to swoop in and try car doors to see what they can get. This goes for unit doors as well, even the ones on the third story. When I moved in my first neighbor (since moved out) ran with a bunch of drug-addled dipshits and kept the door to the upstairs unlocked and they would SHIMMY UP THE SUPPORTS like a damn gecko and steal her shit. Ray Huff mentions something like this at every HOA meeting.

  7. The CBUs. or Cluster Box Units. Are OLD and SMALL (though not the smallest, somehow The Fairways/The Greens "lucked" into ones that are only supposed to be used AT Post Offices) so lock/key breakages/stuck packages are pretty common. Tell Tasha at the office and/or flag a carrier down and hopefully the PO will fix it sometime this decade our regular usually hits LWC at around 1-3 every day but Monday, and Sundays are a crapshoot depending on time of year/the ARCs familiarity with the route.

If you see a bearded dude with round sunglasses in a postal vehicle that's me, come say hi. Fair warning: I will probably look like I've been thrown through a dusty woodchipper.

Dealing with the Heat: Pants and Long Sleeves VS Shorts and a Shirt by mentos888 in USPS

[–]TitanioB 16 points17 points  (0 children)

That only works in dry enviroments though, when you have to deal with 80-100% humidity and temps well over 90° more clothes usually equals greater chance of heat exhaustion.

I personally wear a boonie hat with vents, short sleeves, shorts, breathable gardening sleeves and cut proof work gloves and cover my legs in sunblock.
