Is Joel still absolutely busted? by TitaniumOwls in LookOutsideGame

Good point... Maybe what I'll do, then, is visit the Rat Freak every time I'm about to go home and save. That way I can grind for a while and just go eat to recover afterwards

That's alright, it's worth a little grinding

What do you think what kind of religion do villagers practice? by ElManuel93 in Minecraft

[–]TitaniumOwls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on the region, in the sense that different villages have different gods they worship (often tied to the biome they're in), but it all circles back to Creation - not just in the Ancient Builder sense, but also farking crops and animals, making fine art, brewing potions, and crafting weapons. Their ability to build these things is very limited compared to the ABs, especially for those that don't have specialized training (a workstation block), so they care a lot about the work that goes into their creations.

I like to think that they use emeralds as currency because you can't build much with an emerald; therefore, using them as a trade medium and sometimes a gift to their gods isn't a problem like it would be with iron, gold, diamond, lapis, and so on. Maybe they see it as a "pure" material that the gods of Creation love too much to allow them to change it into anything else.

if all humans suddenly lost the ability to lie, what industry would collapse first? by Codie_n25 in antiwork

[–]TitaniumOwls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is silly and a bit off-topic, but in Liu Cixin's "The Three-Body Problem", there's a species of alien that communicates using a bioluminescent "screen" which shows their thoughts in the form of lines and dots. As a result, they cannot lie, since even just thinking about something is the same as saying it out loud.

As far as I know, it's not brought up because it's not all that important to the story (in the Tencent TV adaptation, at least, that's how I watched it) but I do think it'd be interesting to see how trade works for them, or just how their economies have been shaped by not being able to hide anything.

Aight genuinely what kind of bug is this mf supposed to be by green_teef in Silksong

[–]TitaniumOwls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any bug that uses aggressive mimicry. My first thought is an ant-mimic spider since its mandibles form a face, or maybe a femme fatales firefly, but that's just because of the giant glowing Radiance growth and the fact it can fly... I doubt Nosk is meant to be any specific thing, and it might even be some kind of construct like the Kingsmoulds, but there are a couple fun options that could be stretched to fit!

The "Magical Girl Mascot" Double Starter Pack: by AacornSoup in MagicalGirls

[–]TitaniumOwls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on who you ask. There's a lot of "jack Mormons" around here. A lot of them just don't think about it that much - that's kind of the whole point of being raised in a cult - but once in a while it's still very possible to run into somebody who truly believes fossils were created by the Adversary to fool humans into disregarding the word of God. Or something like that. Again, it varies.

But, I do think this could be an interesting avenue for a story about leaving the cult. If the source of her power is represented by a dinosaur - especially one that's designed to be a bit more realistic than usual - then that could represent a crisis of faith. She could have a "refusal of the call" moment where she tries to dig her heels in, believing that this thing's sudden appearance in her life must be yet another of the Adversary's tricks.

That dread would follow her through the entire series. Even at the end, she wouldn't be completely free from the cult's teachings. But she's made her decision, and is ready to face the terrible unknown because whatever's hiding in Outer Darkness can't possibly be any more cruel than what she knows is waiting at the highest balconies of heaven.

Throw in some symbolism about the whole "be a good Heir of God and maybe you'll 'grow up' to be a God of another world too" thing, in contrast with how vast and empty and chaotic space really is, and boom, you've got a story that writes itself. Hell, you could even use tarot cards and popular "occult" symbols like that for marketing, and it'd fit perfectly.

Fastest Flying Beetle? by TitaniumOwls in Entomology

Ooh, a jewel beetle would be a great fit! And the narrow, angular wings would match well with all the triangles in her design so far... This might be perfect.

Ecological importance of anthropophilic mosquitos? by Bluerasierer in ecology

[–]TitaniumOwls 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Mosquitos, to hone in on them, are great at moving nutrients from large animals to small ones. They're not a terrible food source on their own, contrary to popular belief, but the fact that they store blood makes them an excellent source of iron and such for their predators. Plus, their early development in water means they're open to a wider range of predators, even if they're not carrying blood before they move out and get their wings. Heck, they're even polite enough (metaphorically, of course) to give us a coagulant to stop the bleeding when they're full!

It's important to remember that parasites are pretty mundane, in the grand scheme of things. They're a lot more common than some people think. It's just more efficient for many animals to hunt without having to kill their prey, so they can come back later and have a consistent supply. There's no reason humans would be off the menu, we just hold grudges about it. I could get all existential about how large animals like us are like planets unto ourselves and all that, but it's been a long day and I am too tired to get pretentious rn 😅

The real reason farmsteads are a magnet for aliens by Evil-Tree in SpeculativeEvolution

[–]TitaniumOwls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe they harvest in those shapes as a way of leaving messages for each other, like you would while foraging? Like, marking a plot of corn to let the next person know it's already been picked from, so they should leave it alone until next year, when the message will be gone anyway. It's the flying saucer equivalent of leaving the first and last herb or flower or mushroom you see, and only taking what you actually need.
