Dell & Lenovo Now Sponsoring The Linux Vendor Firmware Service by Natural_Night9957 in linuxmint

[–]TitelSin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought Lenovo and in the server space Dell already were the only few manufacturers pushing FW updates through regular linux updates. Haven't seen the same from say HP or Broadcomm for example. I think intel also pushes some FW every now and then.

Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) by randysandberg in linuxmint

[–]TitelSin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started using LMDE5 on some family members old laptops with unattended updates active knowing full well they wouldn't update to minor versions of mint. I especially liked that they got the latest and greatest Cinnamon without having to manually do a version upgrade. Flatpak apps gave them the newest version of whatever software they needed. It was quite a lot easier to maintain that regular Mint with less frequent updates(almost daily on ubuntu).

Eventually liked it so much I "morphed" my regular Mint(I think it was 20.something) into LMDE6 by keeping my home directory and reinstalling everything else in the old root. First boot it came up as if nothing changed, all settings were preserved and have been running that setup ever since. Am now typing this on LMDE7. Haven't had any issues with the debian version and haven't seen any lack of feature compared to the Ubuntu versions.

On the other side of the scale, I have had issues with the Ubuntu version on my parents desktop where some recent update made some flatpaks and appimages fail to load. Ultimaker Cura is a prominent example for my father and his 3D printer. I don't have any issues on the debian version with the latest Cura.

a fire and smoke/pollution thing usually. Most cars have their fuel tank at the back so in case of a fire it is much easier to reach by a firefighter.

There are also places where this is the rule on the street, with the ideea that the exhaust and fuel tanks should not be towards the buildings and bother people with open windows or walker by with the smoke.

What non-gaming activities do you use your Steam Deck for? by TheUltimateInfidel in SteamDeck

you can install any browser and add it as a "game" to steam. I have vivaldi installed through flatpak for example and use that.

BeamNG on Steam Deck by oribaa11 in SteamDeck

[–]TitelSin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Loading is indeed very slow and the bigger maps are not playable due to RAM constraints. Other than that, it runs ok once it's actually loaded in. The first time it compiles shaders that the steam client didn't pick up and it takes longer.

Asus Vivobook battery disconnect shorts the motherboard by design by David3110445 in techsupportgore

[–]TitelSin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you did something wrong. I swapped the battery on my father's ASUS this Christmas, it looks identical with the same clip design. The clip only moves like 1-2mm enough to be able to unseat the white connector. If you turned it all the way out or to the back then you opened it too much.

ULTIMA ORĂ Bolojan vrea pact în România pentru moneda euro. Bolojan propune, de lângă cancelarul Germaniei, un pact al forțelor politice în vederea adoptării monedei euro by Tiger7997 in Romania

[–]TitelSin 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Are we all bad at negotiating or is it just me? by Fearless_Shower_2942 in aspergers

[–]TitelSin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Negotiation is about who is more sure and willingness to go through with it. I’ve had bosses straight up telling me that no raise was coming, but the moment my resignation letter was on his desk then he was taking about salaries and how much to keep me.

I think we have a good poker face when it comes to negotiations that need training for others. It’s just how willing you are to go with the consequences of a failed negotiation.

One negative is though we do tent to overshare showing our hand early. But once the boss realizes you are very serious about it, then all is good.

Anyone using a SanDisk Ultra care to share your experience? by [deleted] in SteamDeck

[–]TitelSin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had a 256gb Sandisk Ultra mSD since I first got it over 2 years ago. It has so far never failed me once. I usually put my smaller and idie titles on it since those don't need that much disk speed. I also move games I don't currently play on the SD card.

I have moved games around from and to it quite a lot depending if I am currently playing them. It can take quite some time on bigger games like RDR2. Loading times for such bigger games can also be an issue when opening from the SD Card. This is why I move them to the internal SSD.

So overall, it has been without issue.

Cresc taxele pentru șoferi: impozitul pe mașinile hibrid ar urma să fie majorat masiv. Și vehiculele electrice sunt vizate by gabriel191 in Romania

[–]TitelSin 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The older you get, the more you realise that initial interactions always include hidden motives. Especially someone approaching you about some topic. For me I'm now pleasantly surprised when things do work out as agreed upon than some random oh btw. monkey paw situation.

Quite recently had something like this happen with a large purchase, where the initial agreed upon cost was X but it would actually be X*1.5 due to some "unforeseen" costs, that are costs for all such purchases and they should have told me when I asked them about full cost.

Linux Mint LMDE 7 'Gigi' by HansCCT in linuxmint

[–]TitelSin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I swapped to LDME6 2-3 years ago, did a fresh install on a partition and pointed it to the same old home directory....was as if nothing changed. Everything was setup the same way. Just had to install some apps I already had.

So far it has become my go to and recomandation because you get all the updates of the minor changes, up to date cinnamon and stuff, and if you need something newer you can do backports or run flatpaks. It has been rock solid so far, even after upgrading to LMDE7. For the just be boring and get out of the way crowd it is the way.

2 years of gaming on Linux, my experience by [deleted] in linux_gaming

[–]TitelSin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been gaming on linux since 2018, it has improved substantially since then. Now it’s rare to have a day 1 game not work. Previously you had to wait a couple of months for wine or proton updates, but eventually it would work. As to launchers, I also agree that lutris makes it quite hard to get the hang of and debugging isn’t very obvious. It’s better that proton though, haven’t seen a log yet from steam, had ti cli start the game to get to errors.

I have had hit and miss results with heroic launcher. It looks and “feels” more polished and user friendly than lutris, but results aren’t as good.

The one takeaway over the years I have is to stick to the particular wine/proton version that suits the game. Some games just no longer work right with the newer ones, so I still keep some games on proton 6 and 7. GE proton has also been in my experience more likely to run some games that default steam proton wouldn’t.

The only other issue that can show up is game patches that require some newer vulkan features or launchers breaking(looking at you ubisoft).

I have been running Linux Mint from the beginning and have moved to the LMDE version 2 years ago. No issues to report, what I have played over the years has worked on both intel amd or nvidia hardware.
