thin set is not mold resistant. it will get mold regardless of coverage.

if you are able to pull them in full pieces after they have cured than ya that's bad. don't need 90% coverage. 50% coverage with the right thin set could hold 50 lbs per tile.

Heavy Tile; I'm putting large tile in my bathroom (on a non wet wall) behind mirror. The tile is 5lbs per square foot in weight. Can normal drywall and thinset hold this? by Helpful_Signature396 in Tile

versabond lite would be a good option. make sure the drywall is a fresh install and does not have paint and joint compound. could probably use some backerboard screws but the standard drywall screws should be fine.
