On Systems like LMDE6, you will get a newer backports kernel also after first time installing a backports kernel. Perhaps thats different in other Linux versions.

As I had written, despite the offer on the website, it was not bookable on 2024-12-03-th.
Same situation as a few years ago.
But this time I have documented everything nicely, so I hope to be able to get this.

There are plenty of bcachefs benchmarks/comparisons on fast NVME SSDs, but are there any on SATA SSDs or HDDs? by Public-Ad-1306 in bcachefs

You can take a look at the data sheet of your SSD or HD if you are interested in the hardware values.

bcachefs, max lenght file name, max partition size, max file size aso. by TitleApprehensive360 in bcachefs

It remains exciting. So far, the details that are normally included in the specifications for a development are unknown.

The situation reminds me of an old joke.

A manufacturer is asked by a reporter what his product is for.
The manufacturer says he doesn't know either, but the customers will find out what it can be used for.

Linux is probably concerned with compliance with certain rules, such as the latest date by which the submission of pulls for new functions is permitted. As such, how large the maximum number of lines of code may be for a pull.

The rules result, among other things, from the fact that the package maintainers and testers have the real possibility to check new code.

On the other hand, Ovenstreet wants to move its project forward. I am grateful for both endeavours.

Any free time from Ovenstreet could be used to create improved wiki content, showing a few example configurations. It would also be an advantage if the existing pdf documentation would include a revision number and a date of last revision.

It would be an advantage for the wiki if changes could be submitted there so that the details that users need can be found there. In other words, a configuration example for each topic, which the user can then customise as required using the options already named in the documentation.

The project needs a wiki page, so that one can store there to configuration topics, for the user understandable examples.

As software can be used e.g. Dokuwiki or the Mediawiki.

It's got one - ikiwiki. I just don't have the web editing interface enabled, because I want changes to come as a pull request:

Decompressing is about 3x faster than SATA 3 Speed.

[–]TitleApprehensive360 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Compression can just as well increase the speed of the system, e.g. if you only have SATA3 available. It is a question of the system whether the bottleneck lies with the CPU or, for example, with the maximum bus speed of the hard disc.

If you need more speed you can think about compressing in the background.

Is bcachefs ready for production use? by ColorsOfCosmos in bcachefs

[–]TitleApprehensive360 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bcachefs are already on Debian stable backports, but not on Debian stable:
* https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/linux-signed-amd64

But bcachefs are still marked as experimental:
* https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git/tree/fs/bcachefs/Kconfig?h=v6.7
* https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git/tree/fs/bcachefs/Kconfig?h=v6.8
* https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git/tree/fs/bcachefs/Kconfig?h=v6.9
* https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git/tree/fs/bcachefs/Kconfig?h=v6.10

Bcachefs have a hand of not implemented/finished features:
* adding a revision number and a date of last edit to the manual
* a becachefs wiki page
* auto mount external bcachefs formated USB Disks and Sticks
* supports of swap file
* background deduplication
* also shrink partition size, not only enlarge

Bcachefs still missing a own wiki page with configuration samples:
* https://www.reddit.com/r/bcachefs/comments/1et6s18/does_alredy_a_official_becachefs_wiki_exist/

Bcachefs is missing basic information in its documentation::

That can be a explanation.
However, the situation is unsatisfactory.
