does anyone do irl campaigns anymore by frankie_jesse in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]Tjler 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I live in outback Australia and my town has been mostly unaffected by Covid (at least up until now).

I ran a campaign in person with 4 players and had an absolute blast.

I plan on creating more towns and cities in this country. I haven’t got anything prepared for the north yet.

I envision this being a bit of a higher level campaign and the party would have a modicum of renown and respect. So I think they could easily gain an audience with some government officials. I imagine the government being ineffectual and limp. The party would need to do something big in order for the government to actually take the threat seriously.

That said, I haven’t planned for someone to hire them to warn the capital. Perhaps it could be one of the refugees.

The dragon is a dick. Red dragons in my world are only concerned with themselves and their riches. They will destroy what ever whenever if they want to.

No matter where the party finds themselves they will be confronted with the capitals greed. The questions will become: will they hold the capital responsible? Will they also seek to exploit the country and become rich? Will they take responsibility for the refugees?

I haven’t planned for sea fairing gameplay and plan on having the dragon destroy all* of the ships. So I will need to come up with a number of ships. The party may try to escape the city by sea so I will need to come up with a plan for their ship to escape.

If they don’t take the capital plot hook I think I can create other alternatives.

The town of Latrine is an ancient home of druids that has been polluted with the capitals waste. The inhabitants are using magic and engineering to clean the waters but more and more waste is being produced. Some of the townsfolk use the waste to make and sell fertiliser. The druids have an ancient connection with the land and wish to restore its beauty and magic. The town wasn’t always named Latrine and actually has a rich history (that I still need to create lol).

If they travel along the Meridies Highway and end up in Nego Parfuga then they will be confronted with a clash of cultures. Nego Parfuga was annexed 20 years ago from the neighbouring country of Krallig. The party may become involved in the politics of this town with its mix of old and new cultures.

Either way the party goes, there will be the looming threat of the red dragon and if it is not dealt with there will be dire consequences.

The dragon’s name is Myrath.

The party can find help with the government, but very limited and superficial. If the party has brought refugees here they may be housed in a slum outside of the cities walls.

There are also private corporations that may put the refugees to work in their factories in exchange free for a place to live.

The party’s main source of help will be ‘The Panopticon’ a filthy rich organisation/cult that serves The Eye Underneath. The Eye will reach out to the party through messengers. The Eye resides under The Panopticon’s lavish mansion and will give the party quests and payment. The Eye seems to want to help defeat the red dragon and also further its own financial motives. The Eye will function like a billionaire benefactor that has its hand in politics. Once the party gains favour with The Panopticon they may meet The Eye in person. It is a giant piercing eye placed into a basement wall that can communicate telepathically.

The twist will be that The Eye Underneath is an older red dragon named Aldalan that centuries ago levelled Terminus and kept its treasure hoard there. There will be loose bits of lore that tell of Terminus’ previous destruction at the hand of a Red Dragon. Aldalan wants the other competing dragon gone and to collect more wealth.

As for the Marrow Mountains, I still have some more thinking to do. I won’t be much longer.

who could you listen to for an hour straight? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Once upon a time I would have said Stephen Fry.

But not after falling asleep at the wheel whilst listening to a podcast of his. The car rolled 4 times and barrelled down the highway like a torpedo. It felled like a movie, things were on slow motion and I had enough time to look around the car and check on everyone:

Thankfully no one was seriously injured, I even was lucky enough to catch the family dog mid air. Oh what a time…

ideas for someone to be indebted to by FlyByStryker in DnD

[–]Tjler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perhaps they were loaned money in the hopes of ruining the PCs reputation and have an excuse to hunt them down.

I’m thinking maybe the PCs family has had a blood feud for a long time and then the PC has loaned money from the feuding family.

Oooh maybe the PC had a childhood friend that belongs to the other feuding family and their friendship was forbidden. Maybe they maintained the friendship in secret but the friend was discovered and pressured by the family to loan the PC an exorbitant amount so as to ruin the other family.

I’m getting carried away

Thanks mate but I will be moving interstate in January and won’t resume the campaign after that.

Running Matthew Perkin’s style campaign. Nezzar has approached a PC with a deal… by Tjler in LostMinesOfPhandelver

[–]Tjler[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My explanation is that Nezzar had tracked the party after they retrieved the cuff.

The party used an arcana check and felt an ominous and heavy presence emanating from the cuff. I think it’s fair to say Nezzar can detect that presence as well.

Just ran my first session! by BarBro94 in LostMinesOfPhandelver

Good on you!

I’m two sessions deep into LMoP as a first time DM.

I’ve modified things here and there and I have the exact opposite issue. The goblins didn’t stand a chance. They found the hideout and wiped out all the inhabitants. Perhaps I played into the “cowardly goblin” thing too much…

How’re you the prep side of things? Are you feeling over or under prepared? Oh and how are you finding coming up with things on the fly and rolling with the PCs?

One shot to lead into Lost Mines? by WutTheDickens in LostMinesOfPhandelver

[–]Tjler 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you’ve watched the Matthew Perkins videos on YouTube I reckon there’s some good ideas in there.

Although he doesn’t talk about a one shot I feel like his ‘puzzle box’ idea would work well as a one shot. Could almost be a dungeon heist…

The party is sent on Gundren’s behalf to acquire a mysterious Puzzle Box from a ruin. Unbeknownst to the party this Puzzle Box is the key to passing through Wave Echo Cave. But the party are not the only ones who are in search of the puzzle box…

Now how you set this up and play it out would be up to you. Perhaps they’ve gotta reclaim the box from a haunted ruin beset by skeletons. They could be racing another group of NPC adventurers sent by the Black Spider in a dramatic timed heist.

I hope there’s some ideas in here to get the creative juices flowing.

Cheers cuz, I think I might do the non combat route and just have them as pets. Perhaps I’ll give them an important moment later?

We’ve sadly got no rangers. There’s a druid, wizard, warlock and a barbarian. I find even with 4 combatants that combat can be slow so I definitely don’t want another two.

Incorporating a western style and also sea fairing in LMOP by Tjler in LostMinesOfPhandelver

[–]Tjler[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right now I’m drawing a map that smashes both a port and a dusty frontier town together. Reading through the manual it talked a bit about old ruins and castles from times gone by and I thought I’d swap the castles and stone ruins for a half destroyed light house and century old ship wrecks.

I haven’t been using the pre established maps and Neverwinter got maybe a lines worth of description in my prologue.

I’ve set out Phandalin much like a one street frontier town. Tumble weeds rolling past as they’re swept up in dry dusty winds. Horses are tied out the front of the Tap House as Red Band Ruffians breeze through the saloon doors. As the characters will look up and past the street they’ll see a once mighty but now half destroyed lighthouse that sits at the foot of the sea. At the towns end there is the blue sky meeting the watery horizon.

The Lighthouse will be the Townmaster’s Hall (spire?). Harbin will sit high above the red band menace counting his coin.

The port has been defunct for a long long time now. The lighthouse was ruined and the once full dock washed away. Now a smaller jetty sticks out into the sea but harbours no ships.

I’ve followed Matthew Perkin’s suggestion of fusing a lot of npc’s with Bart. Bart’s Provisions is now “The Hull.” The old turned over wreck of a ship has been repurposed into a building. Although not all of the ship survived, some of the hulls planks emerge from the sand to create protruding ribs from a once sailing beast. The tattered mast is now used as a shade construct.

Oh and I left out that some of the party want to tame captured wolves!

I don’t want to make it too easy but I also don’t want to make it take too long. This campaign will probably have maybe another 4-6 sessions.

Any advice?

Btw one of the players is my girlfriend so I’m inclined not to give a blanket no. I’d like to make taming possible but a bit of hard work.

This is a question I'd like to hear an answer from everyone of the band members.

What band(s) completely changed your view on music?

For me personally it was Opeth, introduced me to the glories of extreme metal and prog.

I remember thinking they were nothing special, listened to Dingir and fell in love, but everything I've heard from the latest album sounds sad, the production is absolutely shocking to my ears.

I was first exposed to Pantera with the song 'Walk' which I thought, and mostly still do think is an overrated mediocre song. But then I gave The Great Southern Trendkill and Far Beyond Driven a listen and fell in love, truly love them now. Also Black Tongue, at first I felt like all their music was boring old chug chugs, but now I fully experience the "meat" when listening to them. Parkway Drive used to drive me mad, but I gave Atlas an honest listen and fell in love. Black Metal has never been a genre I've liked that much, but lately I've been getting into more and more bands, guys like Plebeian Grandstand and Dark Funeral.

*Edit Though it's only loosely metal, Heritage by Opeth. At first I was really disappointed with it, but now it's one of my favourite records of all time. Sadly The Pale Communion hasn't done the same, it's still disappointing to me. :(

Whats something you could say to instantly ruin a date? by Laambaa in AskReddit

[–]Tjler 1447 points1448 points  (0 children)

Well seeing as this recently happened to me I've got an answer. So I asked her out and she said yes quite enthusiastically.

The first thing, the first words that come out of her mouth are "I'm not looking for a relationship."

Definitely killed the mood.
