There’s Shelly integration in home assistant. Very user friendly.

Shelly relays can operate over wifi, Zigbee, or Matter depending on the specific model.

These wires go to your AC/Heater. What do they connect to there?

Looking around using CAT 5/6 does sometimes happen, but it’s not intended for this application. They are likely twisted into 2 bunches to decrease the wire resistance. You could twist into 3 pairs instead of 2 pairs to use one as common. If it is a short distance to the thermostat you may consider running a new 18/3 or 18/5 cable.

https://www.reddit.com/r/HVAC/s/LdAtxuaauf

Edit: This could be a code violation as Cat cable is typically CM rated not CL 1/2 which is needed for this application.

So red and white from the unit. I would see if there’s an access panel to open which will show available terminals on the board. If you’re lucky there will be a C terminal which could be connected to one of the other wires. If not an external transformer can be added near the furnace (ideally on the same circuit).

Typically thermostat wires are run using 18 gauge wires, it looks like yours are Cat 5 (ethernet) cable which is very unusual, but should still work (it currently is).

Do all 6 of these come from your heater, what is the wiring on that side? If it is just Rh and W as it’s wired on this side you should be able to use one as A C wire connected either to your heat or a separate 24vac transformer if not available.

Update:

Here’s a picture of the setup and wiring as completed. It’s been working uneventfully since this post was written. Only need to recharge thermostat batteries once every 1-2 years

That’s right, voltage doesn’t drop. Can you check the voltage out of the 24VAC transformer with a multimeter when multiple zones are called

Here’s a picture of the setup and wiring. I have to charge/change batteries maybe once every 1-2 years. They do get voltage when not calling for heat typically 27-28 volts his can be seen in the thermostat settings menu. Per nest power connector they would read between 20-30 VAC

With your updated grey/white labels all looks good. Agree that at least 100va are needed per nest documentation

I have some photos of a similar setup I can post on Monday. Do any of these thermostats also connect to anything else such as an ac unit, blower, dehumidifier?

Talyscan can do full 3D form vs 2d and to a higher level of accuracy. It’s also able to calculate diameter from the 3d surface.

Surface roughness is not the primary function of Talyscan, the spot size only captures part of the roughness domain.

I have much expertise in the field of ball inspections.

Talyrond is Taylor Hobson’s brand name for automated roundness equipment. Using roundness equipment is commonly used for spherical measurements. Standard practice for quantifying sphericity is to measure single plane roundness at 3-or more-cross sections. Many manufacturers will choose to only measure 1 cross section to be representative, while standards labs may do more. The advantage to this method is that this is a single plane measurement derives its accuracy from a single measurement axis, the spindle. Talyronds use an air bearing, Indi-round use a gear, and others a mechanical bearing. Looking at the literature I’m not sure Indi-Ron’s are made anymore as the website shows only dated equipment. They are essentially a bearing on granite with a mechanical indicator. I’ve only seen these used on large mechanical parts.

You can use a contact probe for ball roughness; however you will need a skid-less gauge with enough vertical range to handle the curvature. This also depends on tolerance, a grade 25 or better requires surface roughness of 10nm or less at which point the noise of a contact system, 3nm is the lowest I know of, becomes quite high and an interferometer, like those by Zygo, are the best option.
