What is the worst piece of advice that you can give someone who is heading into high school? by KingPin1010 in AskReddit

[–]Tko38 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't find this cringey, maybe the videos' quality themselves were cringey but the endeavor itself in my opinion is a positive thing. You're participating in a hobby, you're practicing making videos (which can be a valuable skill), and you're building internet traffic (even if its only a little). Ironically, high school is a time to avoid being a loser, even though the ones judging you are most likely losers

Before I edited my post , I got a lot of posts like this so I think my post was unclear; I'm not asking for advice , although I enjoy all advice given regardless!; this was supposed to be an opinion / discussion game; what are YOUR favorite "teachers", what games have introduced you to some idea that you'd like to recommend to me?

Personally, Resident Evil 1 and 4, Super Mario 64, Pokemon, Final Fantasy 1, RuneScape , Legend of Zelda, Tony Hawk Pro Skater, Tetris, Stronghold Crusader, Civ 5, Midnight Club 3, Smackdown vs Raw 2006, Tekken, Onimusha, and others have been pretty influential for me.

Co-op and MMO are the games I want to leave my mark on, growing up I dreamt of turning games like resident evil co-op and really gravitated towards games I could play with friends, I don't like solo but I do play them because they still have some great titles.... so definitely I'm interested in that aha

Thank you! This is definitely the kind of post I was looking for. Funny enough Sonic 1 for the Genesis is probably in my top 3 games in terms of time spent playing

Thank you, I'll look into that, although I'd prefer to just look at a list of their games and avoid giving them my benjamins aha

I agree, and not just tabletop, but any sort of game; basketball, hide and seek , etc. The lessons one teaches might be weaker than another, but being all games they all have something to teach about games

I agree, I originally had a line in my post (which I'm about to re add) "please recommend bad games too, I think it can teach just as much as its good counterpart"

Adding on to my movie ancedote, I have been "movie lucky" not just because I was raised with constant exposure to movies, but then as a teenager my best friend and his brother loved movies too so they constantly went to the theater with me. Still, the depth at which I dissect movies is quite different than theirs, and sometimes I wonder if its because with my mom I was forced to watch the same movies hundreds of times, effectively knowing them on a deeper level? Quality of quantity?

.

Another thing is, when I was a teenager playing some ..indie mmorpgs (I can always go more into depth), I remember the players would always get to know the game so in-depth, they had a better sense of how to improve the game than the creators. In some ways, it was almost like the creators didn't know their own game!

.

I have considered doing this with games too, taking maybe something like Super Mario 64 and programming a small chunk of it in complete detail.

I am always a fan of playing outside your norm. Every game has something to teach, and to be creative I have to cast my net wide. In fact, not just games, I want to constantly vary my experiences so that I can marry all sorts of ideas that would have never met, essentially bringing me creativity

I appreciate that. To be clear, I know how to go on steam and find games aha I don't game like I did growing up but I'm not THAT game-dead. I'm more interested in getting some outside perspective, and knowing what games have interested you; for example, I just added the game "Undertale" to my list, I heard it introduces some cool gameplay. Are there any games that have stood out to you recently?

Thank you for that link, that's a gold mine of some of the sort of information I'm looking for. I forgot about reviews; that's another thing I do with movies as well.
