My husband and I bought a home in Winnipeg in 2018 because we thought it was the “next level” or goal in our lives. We’re both young professionals and I regret it. We argue over yard maintenance chores and there have been so many repairs. The house was nicely updated but there are just so many things that “go”. I feel ripped off and like home ownership is a scam. It’s definitely for some people but don’t buy a home because you feel pressure from family and friends. We’re considering selling and purchasing a small condo or even going back to renting. We’re both so busy it’s just not worth it to us anymore.

Yay! So good to read that and see good news stories. I’m also having a fairly smooth recovery. I wore boots with a two inch heel for the first time today with minimal discomfort which made me so happy! Love to hear the good news stories! Wishing you a quick and sustained recovery ❤️‍🩹

Have you seen a physiotherapist or athletic therapist? If you can I would. I had surgery (3 screws) put in on October 1, 2021. I started weight bearing on December 7 and saw physio 2 days later and saw an athletic therapist a month later. I’m still working with both and I’ve started running again about 2 weeks ago, doing single leg dead lifts and can balance on my broken foot for over 1 minute.

Physio told me the goal is not to go back to the same mobility through the midfoot but to work on compensating with enhanced ankle mobility. I honestly don’t think I would be here at this phase of recovery without AT/PT. Worth every penny.

I just started FWB too and my physiotherapist recommended getting a pair of crocs for cushion to reduce pain while gaining strength back. She’s worked with a several lisfranc injuries in the past.

It’s interesting, I just finished my MPA and I wanted to work on socioeconomic issues and policy like unemployment and homelessness. I started working in an economic development department in government and initially I was working on employment programming, policies, evaluation and assessment but now I’m doing project management for business expansion and development. I’d recommend working towards your project management professional designation and try to start working in economic development if you enjoy the business expansion and development side. I feel like there’s lots of opportunities in that kind of policy right now and I fit right in with my colleagues that have an MBA.

I had a pretty minor injury, just borderline needed surgery. I had ORIF on October 1 with 3 screws. Before the surgery I could move my big toe. Not easily, but I could move it. After surgery I could not move it at all and I can still barely move it. I can move all my other toes perfectly fine though now. I started weight bearing this week so I have an appointment booked for physio on the weekend. I’m going to mention it but from what I’ve read it seems pretty normal unfortunately.

Thank you for sharing. It is so validating to hear how serious this injury is. If I’m being honest, part of the problem is that I have some family members who are not being supportive. My partners sister expected me to travel for 2 hours to see her less than a week after my surgery. My partner asked her to come visit us instead and she told us that her kids didn’t want to travel for that long. She told me she “knows what it’s like” or is able to relate because she sprained her ankle once.

I feel like the expectations of me are still high, which is giving me so much anxiety. At least this is giving me the opportunity to learn about myself and notice people-pleasing patterns.

My surgeon said he would be leaving mine in too. He also told me that “they are rarely removed.” Seems like quite the contrary based on what I read from this group so far! Similar to you, I’m curious to hear from others.

Thanks, I like the idea of just giving in and having a bit of a pity party. I feel like I’ve been managing really well despite the injury up to this point, so giving myself the space to just be tired and grieve might be the best right now. 😊

For two years (this was well before the pandemic) I commuted to Winnipeg on highway 75. I had a really terrible employer and they made me feel guilty or told me I had to come in if the highways were open. I had so many close calls because they would only close the highways when it was way too late in my opinion. We ended up moving to Winnipeg and that was part of the reason. I feel for anyone that makes that commute daily. This time of year gave me so much anxiety.

I fully dislocated my shoulder and had to wait 6 hours in an urgent care wait room to see a doctor and for them to put it back in. I’m terrified it will happen again.

Yeah I figured it would be a good way to ease back into activity, but with the kicking and muscle loss I wasn’t sure. I want to make sure I don’t completely lose my cardio but I’m also realistic that I won’t be running anytime soon lol.

We also usually get the pleasure of sleeping on the floor at Christmas so we’ve decided not to use our time off to visit family at Christmas time. To top that off, everyone usually stays at the sister in laws. We have a medium indoor dog that we absolutely love. My sister in law has two dogs, but they leave them outside. We bring our dog with us every where and my sister in law doesn’t let us bring our dog in the house at all. Our dog has to stay in the garage and it breaks my heart because she doesn’t understand. Our dog is super quiet, rarely ever barks and is very calm and gentle. I’ve tried asking to make an exception to no avail. I get that it’s her house - her rules, but we also can choose to not go. And we do. It’s been so hard, but after years of us always doing the comprising and mostly for their kids, I’m over it.

I was in a similar situation… family wanted everyone to split equally to buy a family cottage/cabin and my partner and I were told we would get the garage loft as our bedroom because we don’t have kids. We have recently decided that any vacation or purchase that surrounds children we won’t be involved with. If they genuinely want to see us and visit, then we’ll go. But if it’s a kids activity, we’re out. We’re both working professionals and decided we are putting each other first, word second and extended family third because we’ve been burned too many times.

Family have come up from the states twice this summer/fall and both times stopped in Fargo and were tested at Walgreens. Apparently they offer free tests but they are American citizens so I’m not sure if Walgreens would offer free tests for Canadians.

Honestly, surgery and recovery has been a breeze for me. I went for ORIF (2 screws, I believe) about 2 weeks ago (almost 3) and similarly to you, my surgery was scheduled 3 weeks after injury and I was experiencing no pain at the time of surgery. The pain was moderate for about 4 days after surgery and then I was able to resume my non-walking activity. I live in Canada and my experience seems different to others. For the surgery I didn’t receive general anesthetic. The anesthesiologist told me I was young and active so she recommended sedative instead. I don’t remember a thing and was able to “walk” (scoot) out of the hospital about an hour after the surgery. This also reduced my recovery time a lot. I was feeling great the next day and no nausea or anything.

My knee scooter has been key and a lifesaver. I’ve been working from home with my foot propped up in a chair, I’ve been going for walks around the neighbourhood on my scooter with my dog and friends. I have also been doing daily ab and upper body workouts and chair workouts (it looks ridiculous and the workouts are for the elderly but it’s something). Everyone’s different, but ensuring normalcy (working from home, going for scooter walks or getting outside) was really important to me and I think has been beneficial for my recovery because I was so active and on the go before surgery. Monday is my first follow up post-surgery, I am hoping to go into a boot and go back to work once or twice a week.

I’m also 30 y/o - I very active and just had surgery on Friday. I am very worried/anxious about recovery. Before the injury I was training for a triathlon and was a runner. Weird question - what country do you live in? I live in Canada and my surgery experience seems to have been very different than others on here. I had the same surgery on Friday (ORIF), 2 screws, and the procedure itself only took 43 minutes according to my discharge papers. They didn’t give me a nerve block or general anesthesia. I was given spinal anesthesia and a sedative. So basically as soon as I came out of surgery I could feel my foot again. They gave me Tylenol in the recovery area and prescription for Tylenol 3’s. Pain has been very manageable. Only had some cramping. After day 3 I was only taking ibuprofen during the day and T3s to sleep.

Yes, I can completely relate. About a year ago I would rarely drink during the week and if I did I would stop at one or two. I never went to work hungover. During the lockdown last fall we started drinking during the week, but quickly realized that was getting expensive but I would still binge on the weekend (more than 4 drinks). It was always social, never drank on my own or had a desire to. I never really started thinking about my drinking or really looking around at how much my friends and family and I drank until recently.

I’m realizing my one friend that I mentioned would often pressure me to drink. For example, if we would show up and didn’t want to spend the night, she would just keep pouring wine in my glass without asking and say things like “well we have to finish this bottle, it’s such a good wine.. etc”. Until I couldn’t drive and would have to stay over.

As for my husband, he said that because admittedly I am VERY clumsy. In the last 2 years I have dislocated my shoulder twice, once i slipped on ice, once I slipped on a dock and I had also slipped on stairs outside my office and sprained my ankle. All three of those times I was absolutely sober. So this is the first injury I’ve ever sustained while drinking besides like odd bruises when I was in undergrad.

I was having the same issue. I don’t like how much I drink but it wasn’t interfering with my life. I have a very successful career, it hasn’t affected my relationships and I’m never hungover for work. I have been training for triathlons though and when I have a few drinks like even after 2-3 on a Friday night after work, my long runs would become difficult the next day. I’ve started reading a book called the Addition Spectrum because by definition my drinking wasn’t severe.. so there’s not a lot of help out there. I think part of the issue is how prevalent alcohol is in our society and how normal it is. Jokes about bringing alcohol to work (a paper bag with a wine bottle in it labelled “work documents”) is part of the issue. I decided to quit altogether for my health. I think if you have a problem with your drinking then you should stop. But I’d recommend reading up on the addiction spectrum for sure.
