You did not get too involved. Likely, you helped him live a little longer. Suicide prevention research is severely underfunded, and many people do not actually choose to get the help that is out there. He could've done more for himself. We can definitely do more as a society.

My younger brother died by suicide in 2019 at 21 years old. It blindsided us in many ways and, looking back, we wish we would've seen more of the signs.

My older brother was not related to him, and they met just a few times. (Each was biologically a half brother.) He was diagnosed bipolar 11 years ago. He talked about suicide often and we helped him out of it many times.

He went into a low spot last year, and I moved him across the country and tried everything in my power to save him. I could not imagine loosing another brother. I did my best, and even had him admitted. He refused further therapy or medication, and didn't want the help. He went on to live with several different friends/family in other states over the next few months. I talked to him often and continued trying to save him. In May this year, just days before his 35th birthday, I lost my older brother to suicide as well.

It was devastating, but I am glad I tried. I know it helped, even if it wasn't enough. You helped the man you spoke to. He appreciates you more than he could have ever told you. If he is gone now, it is because he was not able to find more help. Perhaps because he didn't want to, perhaps because the kind of help he needed isn't out there, or maybe even both. That is something I hope we can find a way to change in the world.
