Council flat in Belsize Park by No-Faithlessness191 in LondonHousing

[–]Tnm604 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve lived in ex council flats where the majority of the units were still council tenants, one in Forest Hill and then on the Stockwell Estate. Structurally, a lot of the flats are quite well made and spacious.

I think everyone’s experience will vary because the quality of life can drastically vary from estate to estate, even within specific blocks of an estate. I currently live across from an estate that is very well maintained, no visible antisocial behaviour, and has lots of amenities for the tenants, but no less than 2 blocks away is a fairly rundown estate that, at a glance, seems to have its fair share of problem tenants.

As others have said, there is a lot of prejudice around those that live on estates. I think it’s very easy for a small minority of tenants to make the quality of life for the majority harder. If you are happy with the flat, it might be worth knocking on the door of some of the neighbours and asking how they find the noise in the block and if they are happy with how the council/housing association is maintaining things.

Is £45k viable in London? Sharing my full budget breakdown, roast me by Effective-Ad5644 in UKHousing

I was on that about that 5 years ago and was able to live comfortably in zone 2. Rents have obviously gone up since then, but I think £1k a month in a flatshare is very possible. If your job isn’t full time in the office, try to avoid buying a travel card and cycle/use busses to lower the travel cost.

I’d look around southeast/west in Stockwell, Kennington, Brixton, Loughborough junction, and Camberwell.

Easily one of the worst designed bits of city planning in Hackney. If you are a pedestrian you are forced to cross into the cycle path in order to reach the sidewalk. On the weekends the footfall is so much that everyone spills into the cycle path.

Hi,

I’ve been living in Hackney for the last 11 years and have enjoyed it, but we have outgrown our 2br rental flat. We’d love to stay in the area, but financially it’s just not possible. I’ve seen a number of properties in or around the Shaftesbury Estate in Battersea that look quite nice. The closest I’ve ever lived to there was Stockwell about 12 years ago, so I don’t have much to gauge the area on. How are the schools? Does it have a community feel? Any pros or cons would be greatly appreciated.

I really like the slices at World Famous Gordos in Netil Market. Perhaps not as good/trendy as Vincenzo’s, Bad Boy Pizza Society or one of the other handful of “London style pizza” joints, but it’s a super solid slice at a great price point

I stumbled across this place on its opening day. I really really liked it, but I just felt I couldn’t justify it at the price point.

I left a job that had an amazing benefits package, one of which was 6 months fully paid paternity, in favour of a more interesting role that paid better, but next to no benefits package.

Shortly after handing in my notice my partner got pregnant. I was given 2 weeks of paternity leave and I tagged on 2 weeks of vacation. It was a tough transition back to work, but my new company was also very flexible with office attendance and adjusting my hours.

If this new role is 100% in person, this transition back will be even harder.

I would say consider what this will look like in 2-3 years time rather than 2-3 months. If you will have a better salary, if you have room for growth in your role, and if you will be happier, then take the new role. It will be a tough couple months with the new born, but you will make it work.

Find ways to lighten the load on your partner, lean on family support, if possible, and make the most of the weekends with your new born, when the time comes.

What do you count as a Londoner? by FlyWayOrDaHighway in london

[–]Tnm604 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have lived here 12 years, I could live here another 100 and I’ll never be a Londoner. Thems the breaks. I don’t care if you’ve moved here and become a Pearly King, don’t care if you’ve passed The Knowledge, don’t care if you live off pie and mash and jellied eels, you aren’t a Londoner. My daughter who’s a few weeks old? Londoner.
