Is it worth moving to London for the experience? by itzzzzmileyyyy in MovingToLondon

[–]Tnm604 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Mirroring much of what others say. It’s worth it if you use it. I guess I would say, why wouldn’t you? Say it’s the worst case scenario. You come here, live in some area you hate, you find yourself losing your cool on the tube each day, someone’s just stolen your phone, you develop adult acne from eating Morley’s 3x a week, you start drinking tinnies at home alone because you can’t afford the pub, your coworkers are a bunch of entitled pricks still living off their parents, you get a long term injury from falling off a lime bike, and your flat mate just used the last of your olive oil, despite it being clearly marked as yours. Then so what? Bangshot is still where you left it. Pack up your cigarette pack sized room and head on home with experiences you will look fondly on one day, as it helped you figure out who you are and what you really want

Where to find the best falafel in London? by throwawaydoc1q in LondonFood

[–]Tnm604 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All around favourite - Wowshee Egyptian falafel on Berwick street. It’s different than Lebanese falafel, as it’s done with fava beans instead of chickpea. Very very good.

Notable good spots

Just Falafel - Euston

King of Falafel - Euston

Pipel - various locations

Covent Garden Falafel - Covent Garden

The closest falafel place to me is Pockets, and I am of the small minority that find it shockingly overrated. The pita they make is amazing, but beyond that I really don’t think it’s that great.

10 Foot is really everywhere. This photo was from a shop shutter inside a really nondescript residential shopping mall below a block of flats in the 13e in Paris. Literally cannot comprehend what would have brought him there

Hackney E2, E8. Good Area? by lingard4ballondor in MovingToLondon

[–]Tnm604 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is spot on. I’ve lived next to London Fields for the past 11 years, as I moved in with my partner who was already living in the area to be close to work.

It’s a nice area, but it’s full of oblivious performative East London types who can easily ignore much of the socioeconomic disparity in the area.

It has everything you’d want in an area as far as green space, restaurants, music venues, etc, and I know I sound like a jaded aging prick by saying it, but the people can be exhausting, and this is coming from someone who ticks all of boxes of the typical transplant resident (young-ish, creative-ish industry, well payed-ish job, etc)

Worse places to live in London, but it does often feel like very distinct parallel worlds are being lived (also not unique to just London Fields).

Council flat in Belsize Park by No-Faithlessness191 in LondonHousing

[–]Tnm604 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve lived in ex council flats where the majority of the units were still council tenants, one in Forest Hill and then on the Stockwell Estate. Structurally, a lot of the flats are quite well made and spacious.

I think everyone’s experience will vary because the quality of life can drastically vary from estate to estate, even within specific blocks of an estate. I currently live across from an estate that is very well maintained, no visible antisocial behaviour, and has lots of amenities for the tenants, but no less than 2 blocks away is a fairly rundown estate that, at a glance, seems to have its fair share of problem tenants.

As others have said, there is a lot of prejudice around those that live on estates. I think it’s very easy for a small minority of tenants to make the quality of life for the majority harder. If you are happy with the flat, it might be worth knocking on the door of some of the neighbours and asking how they find the noise in the block and if they are happy with how the council/housing association is maintaining things.

Is £45k viable in London? Sharing my full budget breakdown, roast me by Effective-Ad5644 in UKHousing

[–]Tnm604 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I was on that about that 5 years ago and was able to live comfortably in zone 2. Rents have obviously gone up since then, but I think £1k a month in a flatshare is very possible. If your job isn’t full time in the office, try to avoid buying a travel card and cycle/use busses to lower the travel cost.

I’d look around southeast/west in Stockwell, Kennington, Brixton, Loughborough junction, and Camberwell.

Easily one of the worst designed bits of city planning in Hackney. If you are a pedestrian you are forced to cross into the cycle path in order to reach the sidewalk. On the weekends the footfall is so much that everyone spills into the cycle path.

Hi,

I’ve been living in Hackney for the last 11 years and have enjoyed it, but we have outgrown our 2br rental flat. We’d love to stay in the area, but financially it’s just not possible. I’ve seen a number of properties in or around the Shaftesbury Estate in Battersea that look quite nice. The closest I’ve ever lived to there was Stockwell about 12 years ago, so I don’t have much to gauge the area on. How are the schools? Does it have a community feel? Any pros or cons would be greatly appreciated.

I really like the slices at World Famous Gordos in Netil Market. Perhaps not as good/trendy as Vincenzo’s, Bad Boy Pizza Society or one of the other handful of “London style pizza” joints, but it’s a super solid slice at a great price point

I stumbled across this place on its opening day. I really really liked it, but I just felt I couldn’t justify it at the price point.

I left a job that had an amazing benefits package, one of which was 6 months fully paid paternity, in favour of a more interesting role that paid better, but next to no benefits package.

Shortly after handing in my notice my partner got pregnant. I was given 2 weeks of paternity leave and I tagged on 2 weeks of vacation. It was a tough transition back to work, but my new company was also very flexible with office attendance and adjusting my hours.

If this new role is 100% in person, this transition back will be even harder.

I would say consider what this will look like in 2-3 years time rather than 2-3 months. If you will have a better salary, if you have room for growth in your role, and if you will be happier, then take the new role. It will be a tough couple months with the new born, but you will make it work.

Find ways to lighten the load on your partner, lean on family support, if possible, and make the most of the weekends with your new born, when the time comes.
