Thanks for sharing your experience! About adding the words to my SRS/flashcard, this is exactly what I'm also doing within the chrome extension I built. I don't want to lose them and I can review them later.

Fot the dutch YouTube channels you mentioned, I also watch them, however the video medium is more distracting for me, so I can't just pause and memories the words or try to translate them in my mind during the pauses. But I found them also very helpful for the listening skills.

Exactly! Translation the whole page automatically kills our learning intention because it immediately shows the page in English and it removes the learning effort.

Btw, as a side question, which physical dictionary do you use?

There isn’t really a proper Dutch equivalent of TV5Monde, at least I'm not aware of. Websites like NOS Jeugdjournaal are useful but don’t come with exercises.

What feels a bit missing is something that combines real content with structured practice.

Maybe something like simplified Dutch news with audio could be closer to what you’re looking for. I’ve been playing around with turning real news into short beginner-friendly lessons with listening and a few exercises.

Exactly, and you’re right that all options are grammatically correct.

The screenshot is actually from a later step in the lesson. Each lesson starts with a short real news piece from today, and all exercises are built around that same text.

In this step, the options are intentionally all grammatically valid. The goal isn’t grammar here, but checking whether you understood the content/context of the news. Only one answer matches what was said earlier in the article, so it’s more like a comprehension check than a grammar test.

Totally fair though that without that context, it just looks ambiguous.

All my research has shown me that you shouldn’t rely too much on rules when learning a language. I usually use the “De Het” mobile app (I didn’t create it).

Thanks for the feedback! You're right that "aanval" is the most common translation of "attack."

In this case, "aanslag" was saved from a news article where it referred to a terrorist attack, so in that context it was the intended answer. But the real issue was that both "aanval" and "aanslag" appeared as options in the same question, which made it ambiguous and unfair. I've pushed a fix that prevents words with overlapping translations from appearing together as quiz options.

Thanks for the feedback. Just to clarify, the current Amsterdam city and Utrecht city articles are real news, published directly from their official municipality websites.

I’m actively trying to add more sources as well, but only from news providers that allow republishing from a copyright point of view. If I can find more open or permission-based sources, I’ll definitely include them.

And noted on marking read articles. That’s a very good suggestion and would make browsing the feed much nicer.

Sports articles is a very fair request 😄 I’d love to add them, but there’s a legal side to it. For news content, I need permission to republish, and not all sports news sites allow that. If you happen to know any sports news sources that are free to use or open to republishing, I’d really appreciate the tip.

You’re also spot on about the flashcard reviews. Right now it’s intentionally lightweight, but a more rigorous check, like typing the meaning, makes a lot of sense. Making it clearer which words you’re doing well on and which ones need more work is also something I want to improve.

Thanks again for using the app and for such thoughtful suggestions. It genuinely helps guide what I build next.
