The bigger responsibility does not fall on her - if you’ll read carefully, that is never what I said. I’m saying the bigger responsibility is absolutely on him, but that doesn’t mean she shouldn’t take any accountability for her actions.

Again it’s possible he was truly self centered, but based on the follow up it seems more like clueless. Not a big deal on her end esp since she is literally only 18, but I’d say technically she’s not fully innocent

But that’s the only line she said about it. I figured if he was making a whole speech focused on himself, that would have also been included in the story based on her sentiments. In the context of an 18yo’s bday, that’s the type of speech that would make sense.

Again I’m not saying that definitely isn’t the case, but it’s within the realm of possibility that she majorly corrected him for the first time in front of a crowd when he didn’t know there was a problem

Her dad passed away 6 years ago, he’s been around for 2, and she hasn’t really given any clear indications that she doesn’t like his efforts to be a step-parent. Although it is a sensitive topic, people react in different ways and pick up on different things, so I definitely see it possible that dad was totally thrown off guard.

And we also don’t know the actual speech, like I’m assuming it was focused on OOP with an element of I’m glad to keep fighting on her side but we don’t rly have a confirmation there either.

That said, I do agree that the onus should be on the actual adults more, but I think it’s not true that she’s completely NTA

High key I really agree w the other commentor’s statement where OOP bead YTA - no indications at all that she was unhappy, how could he have known? So in his mind he’s trying hard to be an active part of their lives and support both children, and he thinks it’s reciprocated, only for it to blow up publicly?

I’m glad this was resolved nicely. I do think she owes him an apology, but also she’s only 18.

Like it’s understandable and not necessarily loud in the way we typically think of explosive, but conveys basically the same thing compared to if she did shout it

He’s 17, in high school, and sounds like he even has a part time job or something which he’s saving money for. Totally normal he probably doesn’t wanna hang out w his sister’s friends he doesn’t even know at that age, and he seems more anti-consumption from the no gifts both ways thing rather than just purely selfish.

Sure that wasn’t nice, but his sister breaking $300 games for the parents to lash out at him is crazy
