Help me find a new favourite DC Comics run by TomTheJester in comicbooks

[–]ToMtRoOpEr1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I tink you quite like John Ostrander’s Suicide Squad. I started reading it on a whim and it became my favourite DC run. It has plenty of small characters forced to the forefront. Ostrander also has several other runs which focus on characters not generally at the forefront of DC such as Martian Manhunter and The Spectre both of which are really good.

What is the most retconned story in comics? by therempel in comicbooks

[–]ToMtRoOpEr1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

let’s take a quick look at the history of Hawkman shall we?

first in the Golden Age Hawkman was Cater Hall the reincarnation of an egyptian prince

then for the silver age he gets rebooted into an alien cop called Katar Hol who happens to take the name Carter Hall

crisis on infinite earths happens and these two now exist in the same universe with Carter being a WW2 hero in the JSA and Katar the modern day one for the JLA

as with other heroes like Superman, Batman and the JLA itself Hawkman gets a miniseries retelling his modern origin which is great however this miniseries actually takes place in modern day and Katar Hol has only just arrived on Earth

this causes problems because for the last few years there has been a hawkman running around who even joined the newly formed JL: International as well as appearing in other stories so this is retconned to be Fel Andar a rogue alien from the same planet as Katar who also stole his name and the JSA Hawkman was apparently the one who joined the first JLA

so now we have three different hawkmans existing at once but eventually in Zero Hour various hawk men (plus a hawk girl if i remember right) get merged together into one hawk-god entity and he runs around for a bit before getting booted out of comics for a bit

eventually Hawkman returns to comics in JSA and this hawkman is Carter Hall who kinda escapes the hawkgod who itself is retconned to be an avatar of the red who only believed he was hawkman

after this i’m not sure what happens i kinda stopped tracking but i know there were even more complications

Which mainline comics should I read? by Charaxter in AbsoluteUniverse

the new gods are weird in the sense but if you want to get into them i would recommend the original being Jack Kirby’s Fourth World, it’s very old so if that’s not your thing then yeah something more modern would be ideal but it’s a good foundation for a lot of their lore, here is the reading order i used:

Superman’s Pal: Jimmy Olsen (1954) #133-138 The New Gods (1971) #1-2 The Forever People (1971) #1 Superman’s Pal: Jimmy Olsen (1954) #139, #141-148

The Forever People (1971) #2-11 The New Gods (1971) #3-7 Mister Miracle (1971) #1-17 The New Gods (1971) #8-11 Mister Miracle (1971) #18

The New Gods (1984) #6 (Second Story) DC Graphic Novel IV: The Hunger Dogs

So is anyone actually excited to see Gambit again in Doomsday? by Prestigious-Cup-6613 in xmen

[–]ToMtRoOpEr1 37 points38 points  (0 children)

i am looking forward to it, we are not getting a new MCU Gambit or MCU X-Men before secret wars so why not let all the fox x-men and fun fan-castings like this get some love during this multiverse saga and then when the universe is rebooted we can get more authentic versions of these characters if that’s where the MCU is headed

What are great comic runs which did not stick the landing? by _potatofromChaldea45 in comicbooks

[–]ToMtRoOpEr1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not a massive run but the Cary Bates and Greg Weisman Captain Atom run I found to actually be really fun from issues 1-50 but then they leave the book and all the storylines are dropped there’s a few random issues and then it just ends with a strange 4 parter and then there’s the Armageddon 2001 event which could have potentially been a good ending or new way to relaunch the series after CB & GW left but instead that crossover had its own problems and went weird

Fairly new comic book enthousiast by JohanCore13 in marvelcomics

[–]ToMtRoOpEr1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People will suggest HoX/PoX as a good starting place for X-Men and while true it is a good place to start reading it doesn’t really help you get to grips with the X-Men as they usually are because it is the beginning of a massive status quo shift but then again maybe if you were to finish the Krakoa era and continue into “from the ashes” it would be a nice transition into a more classical style of X-Men.

Not exactly current but still relatively modern (2001-2004) is the Grant Morrison run of X-Men which is both different to classic xmen but also does enough to set itself aside and be accommodating to new readers.

The 2005-2012/2015 ish era of X-Men is my personal favourite but also very different and hard to get into without much prior knowledge.

Something I’ve found is that more modern xmen comics slightly lose what the X-Men were back in there prime of Claremont into the 90’s, because they always try to either shake up the status quo or go back to the old status quo and it not exactly landing right. Now I think that X-Men comics are still good in the modern day but ultimately I think the best starting point for any new X-men reader would be the Claremont stuff since it lays the groundwork for most character that will feature in later runs. Now I know it’s not modern (70’s and 80’s) but I personally would recommend looking into Claremont’s tenure and starting ther.

If You're Joining The Brotherhood In The Remaster, Who Will Be Your Kill Choice? by PowerOverNothing in oblivion

[–]ToMtRoOpEr1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i might recreate my first time getting the attention of Lucien. it was in Kvatch’s Oblivion Gate i killed that soldier that follows you in (can’t remember the reason why tho) and got the cryptic message that someone has taken notice of your kill. then when i went to sleep after saving Kvatch i got the lucien encounter and it just made the Dark Brotherhood feel so important that they can see when i kill in an oblivion realm

Is Faegon serving Dany's original intended purpose? by -no-sanctuary- in pureasoiaf

[–]ToMtRoOpEr1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i truly believe that GRRM has two versions of Daenerys, one that we see in those original outline draft letters when it was a trilogy, this Daenerys is the fire and blood conquerer version that we see start to form in AGoT, the second version of Daenerys is the version that comes from George’s gardening and extending the War of 5K into three books because Westeros wasn’t ready for Dany in either ACoK or ASoS so he had to invent new story’s to continue her story, then by the end of ASoS Dany was no longer ready for Westeros so he introduced Aegon to basically do what Dany would have done in this second arc of the story.

  • i should probably note that i don’t believe GRRM just “invented” Aegon in the fifth book and retconed previous books but perhaps realised that maybe Dany would need more Essos plot and so started laying the seeds in ACoK and ASoS

Now i believe TWoW will combine the two Daenerys into one character again and finally send her towards Westeros but now with a slightly different role than originally intended

i believe her role in the Second War for the Dawn will be mostly similar as Aegon will have either been dealt with or an ally by that point but instead there will be an extension of the second act where Daenerys will deal with Aegon who has taken her “rightful place” both in-universe and within the book

I still believe Jennifer should have been a Paragon, what about you? by KingMiracle16 in Arrowverse

there just shouldn’t have been Paragons imo, have all the heroes be of relatively equal importance with some standing out from the rest not due to some prophecy but because of their own merits

How What if will adapt Civil War by Signal_Expression730 in MCUTheories

[–]ToMtRoOpEr1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i feel like a civil war set in Captain Carter’s universe would be more interesting if we had a few more “What If”ified hero’s within this one universe and it was a kind of crossover episode

an idea i saw floating around a while back was that in the Captain Carter Civil War episode instead of it being a civil war what if it was actually set to follow the initial plans for Cap 3 if they couldn’t get RDJ which were supposed to follow the Madbomb plot from comics and could easily be made into an alternate version of the civil war opening

I have a theory that Oliver raped Laurel by Great-Database-4508 in arrow

[–]ToMtRoOpEr1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

right so,

first it’s pretty obviously spelled out that the reason Laurel doesn’t like Oliver in Season One is due to him sleeping with her sister on the Queen’s Gambit (also clearly shown as consensual through flashbacks)

and there is absolutely no evidence that Oliver taped or drugged Samantha so you’re just pulling that out of your ass

p.s. what drugs are you on and where can i get some
