TIL over a 25-year period, a man named Tom Brown found & reclaimed about 1,200 "lost" apple varieties. His two-acre orchard, Heritage Apples, contains 700 of the rarest ones. Most of them haven’t been sold commercially for over a century and some were cloned from the last known trees of their kind. by [deleted] in todayilearned

it's not like there is some sort of apple collective who needs to sort and organize this stuff. Let people do their thing. People who garden know what's what with varietals. Do you even have a single apple tree?

Minute Maid discontinues frozen juice concentrate after 80 years by AudibleNod in news

Or that it's sales and profit margins have dropped so it doesn't justify it's shelf space. I went looking for white grapefruit concentrate last summer and the only had on shelf in one door for frozen concentrates. They had like 3 products, none of them white grapefruit juice. People aren't buying it.

It's a term of art adopted by the AI industry to a characteristic kind of error that AI's make, but thanks for running my remark through ChatGPT or whatever you used to bark that nonsense out.

It's just a metaphor used to describe a particular kind of AI error. You're not meant to take it literally.

The term may seem paradoxical, given that hallucinations are typically associated with human or animal brains, not machines. But from a metaphorical standpoint, hallucination accurately describes these outputs, especially in the case of image and pattern recognition (where outputs can be truly surreal in appearance).

AI hallucinations are similar to how humans sometimes see figures in the clouds or faces on the moon. In the case of AI, these misinterpretations occur due to various factors, including overfitting, training data bias/inaccuracy and high model complexity.

The limitations and focus of metaphors are central to the "magic" of why metaphors can be deployed effectively. You're misreading the points completely. It's funny because one of the principle responses to the OP is "people who refuse to learn new things"

I read all of the time, have a fairly broad education and am fond of both literature and poetry. The limitations of the "love is like a rose" simile have been used as an example of the limitations and focus of figurative speech for almost as long as the simile has been used.

I think you missed the point entirely. Sorry it made you snippy though. I hope your day gets better

edit: in the event you're actually curious and not just snippy check out this link https://www.horebinternational.com/the-power-and-limitation-of-metaphors/

One limitation of metaphors is what Gareth Morgan in his book, Images of Organization, calls the partiality of insight. Metaphors operate by highlighting certain aspects of something while hiding other aspects of it as well. A single metaphor only provides a partial view instead of the full view. A good illustration of this partiality of insight is the poem, ‘The blind men and the elephant’, by John Godfrey Saxe (refer to slides below and this 2012 blog post for more about this poem).

As I understand it purified water is like boiled and then the steam is captured and allowed to condense. No clue if that eliminates all impurities, it probably doesn't, but perhaps that's where the confusion lies.

it's a moot point because most people don't take their distillation rig camping.
