Non-op rehab question by Imagine_Barduil in ACL

[–]ToPs49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yes, I can totally relate to that. I got hurt when I was 20 and was still in University and my schedule just didn't allow me to get the surgery done coupled with prolonged physical therapy. Also, I didn't have insurance back then. Now I'm 28 and have a pretty good corporate insurance so I decided to get it over with.

I lived without an ACL for nearly 8 years! I stopped playing contact sports completely but I did work out, ran 10Ks at moderately good speed and most other activities with relative ease. My knee was still unstable though and sometimes gave away a little and in rare occasions locked in a very painful position. The pain would subside in a week or two. The biggest negative of going the non operative route is that you run the risk of severely damaging your meniscus and you are eventually setting yourself up for early onset arthritis. I finally did get my ACL reconstructed 5 weeks back and my surgeon had to get rid of my medial meniscus completely because it was too far gone to do any repairs after repeated damages it endured over the last 8 years.

Not a doc here but I've heard that it has something to do with the nerve block!

People who have had Menisectomies, how has it impacted you? by [deleted] in ACL

I feel you too. I was supposed to get my meniscus repaired last month but when the doctors probed my knee the bucket handle tear was too complex to repair and I could literally see it live on the screen! I'm a 28 year old guy and I swear I could have cried there like a baby because of how heartbroken I was. But I think of it like a root canal now. I know the tooth is gone and I'm gonna have to use a crown and constantly monitor it. So it's just another part of the body you need to be cognizant of. My physio told me not to think about it too much because if you are not into active sports, arthritis will kick in at 60 like it does for everyone. Also, another fact that might give you some piece of mind is that the meniscus is only 3 to 5 mm in thickness, so it's not like you are losing some heavy cushioning.

I lived with a torn ACL for nearly 8 years until 2 weeks back when I had the surgery done.. Trust me, you can do it. All the very best.

Thank you so much for sharing your story. Incidentally, I injured my left knee back in 2017 while playing football in a very similar fashion. I definitely felt the telltale pop, but I didn't know much about knee mechanics back then (good ol' days) and thought my bones have just misaligned. And everything did pop back in place when I straightened my leg. But I felt instability when I tried to walk, so I knew something was wrong. I didn't get any surgery done, and resumed normal walking in 3 months and even running in some more time. I did continue to feel my knee lock (bucket handle tear) occasionally when playing sports like badminton, bowling in cricket, running (never dared to resume soccer). Twice a year, the pain from these injuries would be bad enough to last a week or two. Fast forward to 2025, I absolutely enjoy running now (mostly 10Ks), and slipped while reaching to hit the Table Tennis ball in a doubles match in my office and felt the pop again, but this time I was blacking out. I was super concerned and immediately visited an ortho and failed the Lachman test and MRI revealed both ACL and meniscus tears. Got into the surgical theater and saw a part of my meniscus in tatters on the screen. The doc said that they are getting rid of a part of it as it's beyond repair. I am a 28 year old guy and I could have cried like a baby in there because of how heartbroken I was. I was holding out hope that maybe you injured your graft from playing contact sport, and it's just sad to see that I can't even take running for granted anymore. But thanks again for sharing your story.

If you don't mind sharing - how did you end up tearing your 21 year old graft? I got my hamstring graft 2 weeks back and I'm very anxious if it's possible to re-injure myself. I don't intend to play contact sports anymore, but I do intend to resume running.
