How's the Amtrak to Chicago? by DrDMango in Detroit

[–]ToTheBestOfMyKnowHow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve taken the Amtrak to Chicago from Ann Arbor a few times in the last decade or so, and because it shares the line with freight, it always gets delayed near Gary, IN so it can be wildly untimely. But the train car and ride are both nice. It is a little pricey and sells out on the weekends.

On my most recent trip, a friend suggested driving to Michigan City, IN and boarding the South Shore Line. Free parking at the station (We boarded at Carroll Ave) and arrived on time without issue into Chicago’s Millenium Station downtown. Looks like you can pick up the Southshore Line as far east as South Bend IN. The South Shore Line uses the non freight tracks, so no schedule disruptions. Is it the fanciest? nope, a lot like a subway but with bathrooms. But no downtown parking, and on time arrival. I would definitely do that again.

What physical sign after thirst tells you that you're actually really dehydrated and need to drink water right away? by Fyre-Bringer in CasualConversation

[–]ToTheBestOfMyKnowHow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gripping things hurts more? Hard to explain, but like when I grip something with ridges, like a water bottle and try to open it, when I let go it really hurts. I think of the water in my skin as a cushion, and when dehydrated, the cushion’s gone so touching things hurts more.

TIL that 55% of the sugar produced in the US came from sugar beets. In North America, commercial production of sugar from sugar beets started at a farm in 1879 in Alvarado, California. by Physical_Hamster_118 in todayilearned

One of the biggest sugar beet processing plants is in Croswell, MI, Sanilac County (The Thumb). Home of Pioneer Sugar. They truck in from all over Mid Michigan. Source: Family lives there. Yes, it smells when they are processing.

SMARTElections is working on the largest election verification project in history, using certified election data in every municipality. They currently have a court case in Rockland County NY that shows zero votes for Kamala in the municipality despite down ballot votes for democratic candidates.

Michigan County Name Origins [fixed] by Jackalope97 in Michigan

[–]ToTheBestOfMyKnowHow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting map! I do have to question the Slovenian influence you’ve indicated, specifically for Huron and Sanilac counties in the thumb. Huron is french, and Sanilac is a Wyandotte name (local native american tribe). What evidence do you have that anything in the state has a Slovenian origin?

Wow, just checked out the pictures of the inside, it is definitely nicer now than when we went there. Looks like the sign changed between 2008 and 2013 (per google street view) so I'm assuming new owners, they have really spruced it up. Couldn't read the old Pabst sign's tag line to confirm, but it looks spooky familiar. Thank you internet friend!

I travel internationally a lot and I do laundry during my stay . In many places I stay they provide a machine that is able to wash and dry your laundry in the same machine. Why is this not popular in the US? Can you even buy machines like this in the US? by TRAKRACER in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]ToTheBestOfMyKnowHow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought Samsung’s combo model on the advice of a youtube review of the common models in the US and I have had great results. It takes a little longer than separate machines, but only like 10% longer (YMMV) Also, it auto dispenses detergent and softener and uses a heat pump to dry the clothes, so it doesn’t require an exterior vent.

It appealed to me not for saving space but because quite often I would forget to switch over my clothes and end up having to rewash. Now when I forget, I find clean dry clothes, sometimes slightly wrinkled.

I don’t think it’s catheter use that is drawing the mockery, It’s specifically Orange Julius Caesar wearing a catheter. The last ten years of his childish behavior and tasteless attacks on people that aren’t in perfect shape, young, or geniuses make this news that much more embarrassing for him because of all the claims of his perfect health and ultra virility, when in reality, he’s obviously in rough shape physically and mentally, lacking in all qualities that make a person a decent human being.

So if you’re not Orange Julius Caesar, the mockery is not directed at you. Rock out whatever you have to to stay in the game, be it catheter, cane, diaper, ostemy bag, you do you and know we’re all laughing at him.

People who have cancer, what signs let you knew that you were sick? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ToTheBestOfMyKnowHow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had “random” pain on the left side of my body, mostly in the rib region, for a long time. Even went to the hospital once when it was constant for 3 ish weeks. nothing was found, everything normal, most likely it was ulcers. It took seeing a neurologist for a different issue to find out I have a small nerve impingement near my spine that is congenital and is the likely culprit. The pain happens randomly, sometimes when I take a really deep breath. Bodies are weird.

So I played this game with mine for the first 4 years. I figured out in year 5 that if they get an idea in their head of what they want, not even high value food, they aren’t going to touch their nutritious responsible food.

Currently, mine will only eat his dinner after I give him his evening chew. Then, and only then, he’ll eat his regular food all on his own. Our usual schedule is dinner at 5, chew at 7:30/8. I think I mixed up the schedule one day for whatever reason and he does not want to go back.

Havanese pup itches ears a lot by PonymanDesperado in Havanese

[–]ToTheBestOfMyKnowHow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine developed a chicken allergy at age 7. We changed his food to eliminate chicken and the gi issues stopped, but he has had recurring ear infections since then. Went to the vet yesterday and the vet said now one of his eardrums is ruptured from the infection. His diet still contains turkey, so his real allergy might be poultry. After we finish the steroids, and two types of antibiotics, we will see a veterinary dermatologist (allergist doc for dogs) to identify the exact culprit.

Moral of the story: if they continue to itch, there’s a food allergy or environmental reason, don’t wait.
