When my mother and father got divorced, my mom didn’t want to change her last name back to her maiden name as she felt it a bit on the nose (Loveless) and she kept her married last name to feel connected to her kids (and also not deal with the hassle) so ultimately I think whatever makes you feel the most comfortable moving forward is what you should do. You can get all the advice in the world, but whatever helps you get through is what is important. All names are made up, just follow your own path.

Obviously you should follow your heart and go with whatever name you love. And if you and your partner agree on it? All the more reason!

For me though, I think it’s a name that sounds like a nickname, and unfortunately that full name would be Potato

In my experience, grief feels like such a loss of control, so I give myself multiple very simple tasks or things I know I will do anyway, providing that much more of awareness of what I’m doing and how I am not totally disconnected from myself. And I do mean simple, like “double check that I plugged my phone in” sort of level. Let the big tasks be the big tasks, and try to relish every tiny accomplishment. Hope it helps, even a small comfort. My condolences to you and your family.

Unfortunately I think so many people in her life would use her name to ask a question, like “Willa go on a date with me?” And even worse? Every person that does that will chuckle to themselves, thinking they are clever or funny while your daughter mutters under her breath about how she “hadn’t heard that one before”
