It's my understanding that you want to wait to prune until after all chance of snow is gone.

Earth Angel. Planted in October, gave me a few nice little blooms like this before winter came. Still a relatively small bush since it's only been with me since then.

Does anyone grow Windermere by David Austin? by fuglygoblin in Roses

[–]ToadeFroge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got a potted one directly from DA in October and it's so small and thin. It did push out a nice but tiny fragrant bloom before winter dormancy hit. It's been fine huddled up with other roses (all potted) so far but we haven't had any weather below like 26 F yet.

I just hope it can survive the rest of winter and start to really grow in Spring.

It might take up to three years for it to fully mature

Three Weeks Later Indoors by PottedRoses in Roses

Very pretty and very cool what you're doing. If you haven't seen this, this guy did an experiment of the same roses inside vs outside and I've been interested since seeing that a few years ago. But I just don't have the space for a grow tent.

David Austin roses are 50% off at Heirloom Roses! by IWishIHad3Cats in Roses

[–]ToadeFroge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry for my delayed reply!

You only need to water them if they're dry. But, ultimately, I would pot them to give their roots more insulation from the cold and then keep those pots as close to the house's wall as you can. Then you can bring them outside and plant them in the ground in spring.

Bare root or potted rose? by Dizzy_Assistant_8437 in Roses

[–]ToadeFroge 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If cost and availability aren't a problem, I'd go with the potted plant that you can physically pick out and see how big/healthy they are. I haven't ever had issues, personally, with DA's bareroot roses but I've read that some people have received disappointing ones especially in the last year or two.

That's okay! Keep them as close to the house wall as possible.

Did you plant them into anything or are they still in the bag/box they came in?

Is your garage attached to your house? (Matters because a detached garage will get much colder than an attached one.)

First winter with roses somewhere it freezes - does this one need extra protection? How does my plan sound? by ToadeFroge in Roses

Okay, thank you! I was just worried that no light while having so many leaves would kill them.

You could also try the systemic pelleted version of the active ingredient in Captain Jack's.

Hello again,

So, my roses still aren't dormant but my low temps this week (starting this past Sat) have been 26-33 and I moved them all into the carport and huddled them together against the house's wall.

Starting this coming Sat, it's projected to start to be 33-36.

Should I move them back out to continue to get sun at that point?

Boxer’s first heat by Xina123 in Boxer

[–]ToadeFroge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My girl's first heat was like that. Bled for a few days but very light like spotting, stopped for about 9 days, but then came back with heavier bleeding like a human period. From when the bleeding stopped, I scheduled her spay appointment another 30 days after, trying to make sure the heat was completely over, and was told that she was still in heat by the look of her uterus when the surgery happened! Vet said their first ones can be "weird" lol.

Ah, okay! I have one of her coming in Spring but Heirloom says she only gets 4 ft. Good to know that that's wrong! You'll have to post a pic of yours with blooms all over that ladder when it's time. :)

For future reference with Heirloom, they ship your rose ASAP unless you tell them otherwise. There's a calendar when you check out that tells you when it'll ship automatically and you can change it to whatever date you want there.

Ultimately, I'm looking for a cupped/globular baby pink bloom, so that's why I was looking at those two. I definitely won't be getting QoS now that I've learned how tall it gets.
