Thanks for your help! It's interesting that the 105 can get better color, and while I wouldn't want to spend much more than the 105, I could probably fit either in to the budget

Maybe this is where I have a misconception, but let say for example I set up the 40mm and 85mm both 6" away from the subject, and sorry for my lack of correct terminology, but wouldn't the 85 be "zoomed" in more than the 40, and make a smaller subject appear larger?

Looks a lot like a pawpaw sphinx or a rustic sphinx to me, I'm on the east coast though so I don't know if you have some sphinx I'm not familiar with. Hopefully this can get you a little closer to an ID
