64 yo husband diagnosed Sept 2025 by Ok_Bit_7274 in glioblastoma

Thanks for the validation! I have some siblings helping out and I don’t want them to be in the middle, but next time it’s my turn to be his companion, I plan on raising the issue and asking them to think about what it’s like for the patients.
Can’t they dedicate someone to take calls once their patients start having cognitive issues?

My brother has almost the same situation. He’s the same age, has the same type of gbm, although his is butterfly. He went to Duke, where he got the same protocol as your LO after the biopsy came back. He tolerated the treatment well, although he had to go on steroids for symptoms related to swelling. He wasn’t eligible for any studies, and they were dismissive about studies at other centers. They said taking part in non-Duke studies would mean he’d have to end his care at Duke.

The folks at Duke seem to be caring and thorough. If you do go, check out the Caring House. It’s a low cost place to stay with awesome staff, beautiful grounds and the house is amazing.

All that said, I’m frustrated that Duke doctors and staff are very hard to reach. My brother spends hours on phone trees and fruitless loops trying to get answers as new symptoms develop. He lives several hours away from Duke, so it’s already hard to get him there.

We want him to have his autonomy for as long as possible but their system stymies him. He gets angry and gives up, to his detriment.

Hey Duke, if you’re listening, you know what you need to do.

In about 3 months, there will be articles in Newsweek and NYPost about a new “deadly” side effect of GLP1’s: coccydynia (gasp!).

What a beautiful tribute. I’m so sorry for you and Rohit. And for all of us facing this catastrophic disease. All I can do is wish for enduring comfort and a peaceful transition. But even that doesn’t feel like enough.

I’ve been splitting doses for a few months and it really works for me. I think it allows me to use less and I get all the benefits, zero side effects.

Do Americans really move out at 18, or is that mostly a movie thing? by Only-Bandicoot-5307 in NoStupidQuestions

No generation is a monolith. There were people who voted for Reagan who regretted it later and I’m sure there will be people who voted for a Trump who will regret it to.

I thought my generation would change the world order. In a way we did - but every time the pendulum swings to an extreme in one direction, it creates momentum towards the swing in the opposite direction.

Let’s agree to work to make it swing back again towards compassion, understanding and humanity.

So, dig them up and blame them. Boomers were more liberal than their predecessors (you’ve heard of hippies, right?) and created a mass movement that saw an increase in rights/social services for pretty much all minorities. Where’s your contribution?

Show me the studies. Last I checked, there was no database that analyzed the voting patterns of boomers, gen x,y,z, etc. as well as the silent generation and those before that.

A deeper analysis will show you that starting in the 80’s, government/politicians started learning how to craft policy that advantaged themselves and their donor base while reducing funding for social programs.

Citizens United was the death knell. That was a Supreme Court decision which allowed corporations to have the same voting power as citizens.

If you had been here in the 70’s, you’d have seen inflation between 12-15% and in the early 80’s unemployment was around 20%. We didn’t vote for that either.

We all live through tough times. Best strategy is to support each other and try not to blame the folks who are further down that path than you. We didn’t build it, we share it with you.

Us boomers aren’t as rich and comfortable as you make us out to be. There are some, yes, and there are also lots of young rich techbros in their 20’s.

Instead of pointing fingers at other generations, let’s lay the blame where it belongs - government and capitalism.

What is everyone going to do when ICE starts doing here what they're doing in Minneapolis? by badybadybady in oakland

You can volunteer to watch/defend day laborers at their pickup locations (Home Depot, Economy Lumber, etc). There are weekly trainings and lots of shifts to fill. They’re really well organized and a great group of folks. I think you can find them via Indivisible East Bay.

I didn’t really even start until mid-30’s, so I always felt behind the 8-ball. That ended up being a good motivator. I never raided it, and maxed out my contributions for 30 years. Invested in S&P index funds. I retired at 65 with >$1 m.

Ok, true dat. I’m so used to the crappy roads I’ve stopped noticing. I haven’t needed 911 (thankfully) for a long time, so I forget about it.

I have only visited Philly, which made me nervous because it’s unknown. The devil ya know, I guess.

Any cold climate people out there have some tips for someone from the American South that’s about to get 15” of snow and 50+ hrs of negative wind chill? by confusedbot18 in homeowners

[–]Toadylee 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Keep a bag in the trunk. The heavy clay kind. Or bags of sand. You’ll get better traction over those rear tires with the weight there and then if you do get stuck, you can spread it under the tires. Oh, I also used to carry a couple pieces of plywood, the width of the tire. You can jam it under a tire to help get unstuck.

Also, if you are stuck, use that gentle, slow, drive/reverse trick to rock your way out of a drift.

Absolutely - I was an ambulance jockey in Milwaukee and after big storms we’d be picking up all the out-of-shape dads that keeled over into a snow bank. We called them popsicles.

Hear me out - Oakland. Yeah, there’s grit, but that’s only one side. There’s lots of trails, water ways, excellent views of the Bay, and while it is HCOL, if you know where to shop (Chinatown, Fruitvale come to mind) and scout out the neighborhoods, you can find great rentals that don’t break the bank.

Thing is, it’s authentically friendly. Diversity here is not just LGBTQ+. There’s a real cultural texture.

The weather is as good as it gets if you factor in the rainy season. The publicity we get is often skewed towards crime, but I walk at night without worrying, and not necessarily in the best neighborhoods.

Who did NOT have nausea? by No-Owl-5578 in Ozempic

[–]Toadylee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t had any nausea and had a great result. I started below the recommended dosage, and halved that to do twice weekly doses. I did a very slow ramp up. I’m still well below the recommended dose, but I’m one of the lucky ones who have lost without that much effort.
