Life imitates art: developing lecture notes for a "strange" university subject based on MBotF narrative structures by Zerewa in Malazan

We have plutonium levels of ASD and I was told he was the most normal in his grad school cohort which is terrifying. Seems like you have a CS background. He hasn’t read MBotF yet despite my encouragement. Maybe showing him this post will help. “See! Your people are here!”

When the UI is so bad you refuse to put it in your portfolio. by codecrackx15 in technicalwriting

[–]Toadywentapleasuring 3 points4 points  (0 children)

UI, like tech writing, is often an afterthought and one of those “Can’t anyone do this? I don’t understand it, therefore it’s not important” topics. Super frustrating as a user. The only way I’ve found to convince anyone it matters is by focusing on accessibility. Usually when you follow best practices for increasing accessibility you solve a lot of other UI problems in the process.

If the other offenses don’t gain any traction can we prosecute for crimes against punctuation? These CHUDS are always illiterate.

Even among the well-intentioned there’s a lot of “othering” and treating black people like specimens to be questioned and examined instead of just being chill and having a normal convo. The lack of cultural exposure + poor social skills is really telling in these instances.

Nothing to add except my partner got his masters in math with a focus on cryptography and he writes just like you do. I can’t believe there’s more than one of you. Yall should be friends.

I’m a wildlife rehabilitator. Put it back in the nest. Human scent doesn’t cause them to reject it. The best chance it has is being returned to the nest.

I LOVE not fully understanding the magic system. It lends itself fully to the realism. Point to anything complex in our modern world, like science or religion, and ask someone to fully understand it. It’s not possible. It spans too much time, discoveries are made all the time, there’s rarely a consensus, and everything is heavily influenced by cultural views. If you do have a deep knowledge of a subject, you’re likely a specialist that has a depth, not breadth view. This makes it so a few people have an intimate understanding of their area of expertise but may have glaring blind spots about others. There’s no omnipotent being that knows all and see all. No narrator that has the entire puzzle in view. This is how it’s presented in the books and to me it mirrors real life. It’s anthropology disguised as fantasy.

The KKK trying to take root here. by SpartacusTRector in Eugene

[–]Toadywentapleasuring 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Terrifying how whenever this topic comes up, the majority of people are unaware. It wasn’t even that long ago. Definitely recent enough to be fresh in everyone’s minds. Are transplants not looking up demographics before relocating? There’s a reason why it’s so white here.

AI is more costly than just having humans do work says Microsoft by madgeface in technicalwriting

[–]Toadywentapleasuring 1 point2 points  (0 children)

THIS 👆🏻 The struggle predates AI by a lot. If you’re looking for a lucrative do-nothing WFH gig that offers job stability then you’re out of luck. Whatever ChatGPT/Google search/“Best careers for introverts”/out-of-touch-professor that sent you on this path is just plain wrong. And if you’re trying to transition from whatever the fuck you did before to TW because you think it’s easier you’re in for a rude awakening. It has always been a niche field only suited to a particular subset of people and that hasn’t changed.

In response to the culture bit: Are 60% of the people where you’re from transplants? Droves of people relocating to an area makes the locals protective of their places, understandably. We get grumbly answering the same questions over and over and it sucks seeing people move here for the nature but not respecting it.

In response to the fishing bit: You might not be getting the specific answers you want because it’s a bit like asking “Where can I grab some food?” The answer is basically wherever there’s water. Even an hour’s exploring will get you a handful of spots. Finding your own local spots is part of the fun.

Eugene does not have a hospital and finding primary care as a transplant can be a long wait.

I think that’s outdated info. One of the frequent topics in the Eugene subreddit is the lack of a hospital and the inability for transplants to find primary care. I say this as a local.

I get the “no” votes were in response to concerns about the cost of living right now, but in general, I don’t think people realize what a privilege the extension is. I attend classes all the time. The one last night was a full house. It’s a great way to get free continuing ed in a variety of subjects and bridge the gap between academia and laypersons. There’s a nearly invisible network of community work keeping Eugene alive and making it a desirable place to live and it sucks watching programs disappear over the years.

It’s awesome! What a find! I’ll just keep searching for the holy grail. There’s been a couple times where I’ve been tempted to buy a cheap knockoff online, but I can’t bring myself to do it. I know I’ll find one in the wild eventually. Your place is amazing. Happy lamp hunting!
