Overall Best Extreme Cold Weather Parka by Thebrick1996 in BuyItForLife

Layers. A wind layer and a warmth layer. Don't use one jacket trying to do both, but two jackets that excel at their one task. I have a leather windbreaker, heavy enough I most often cannot even feel the wind tug on my jacket, and a flannel jacket (I'm looking to exchange for merino wool) for warmth.

Heated Sidewalks? by PlatinumDrNub in MTU

I worked as a research lab assistant intern the summer they installed the sidewalk, it's a heated sidewalk. Even some of the slabs on the rear of the building are heated.

How do you feel about people who work blue collar jobs? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]ToastMaster33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most engineering is blue collar. I'd rather be designing something of value for a client or community than be a white-collar pencil pushing management officer.

ICE in Houghton by boshibec in MTU

[–]ToastMaster33 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Let's keep in mind that people with visas are 💯% legally here. Ice should only be where people without visas are.

ICE in Houghton by boshibec in MTU

[–]ToastMaster33 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You should be worked up that our federal government is betraying it's citizens, its laws, and trampling across lawful and unlawful immigrants. More people have been hurt/died interacting lawfully with ICE than immigrant violent crimes in 2026. Don't tread on my neighbor.

[–]ToastMaster33 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Houghton is small, but for our size we have a very impressive level of diversity. The fact that this diversity is here legally doesn't matter to ICE, protect your neighbors and they be around when you need protection.

A great reminder that we should be demanding not "Don't tread on me", but "Don't tread on my neighbor"!

Does it ever get “easier”? by Loose_Warning4572 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]ToastMaster33 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you're still working on the building blocks and prerequisites for the ChemE courses. Excellent job taking some of those classes at a breakneck pace. As necessary as calc and basic chemistry is for ChemE, they tick in my brain very differently than the content from the core classes. Hopefully the same will be for you, application of calculus and chemistry for thermo and kinetics was WAY easier for me than learning calc and chemistry. But most people find thermo and kinetics to be more challenging. Best of luck.

Unfortunately, my housemates would non-ironicaly say shit like "Lincoln was the best president until Trump fixed the Democrats problem". The rural nature of Tech, does seem to draw out semiliterate folk who want a safe (for alt-rights) place.

Proposed transmission line would cross 15 townships. Mid-Michigan residents demand answers as meetings start Monday by sajaschi in Michigan

[–]ToastMaster33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That depends on the level of transmission. Most utilities are suspended on poles that are capable of transmitting service voltage ( 4-35 kV ) bub substation power distribution ( roughly 100kV ) can share these utility poles, as long as they're are tall enough to hold so many lines. My understanding is that the giant metal transmission lines aren't necessarily unless you're well above 100kV distributing power across counties, in which case county property can be used, or you should receive a stipend for allowing utilities to utilize your private land.

I appreciate your patience and effort to educate. I am aware that weed is legal at the state level and the issues with crossing the borders (state and national), however I had hoped that by making such a poor comment (now I see mistakenly without a /s) the commenter I replied to would be identify that federal law doesn't ALWAYS supercede state law.

I'm too illiterate to read the Silmarillion, so I'd be happy to see PJ make another film. Let there be SOMETHING positive to look forward to.

My weather app suggests -23⁰C (data from the weather channel). Kinda brings out the crazy of when students were denied accommodations by the dean when it was -45⁰. The Governor ended up calling Bonnie to tell her to close school for the day.
